    This song calls to mind another tragic scenario. Odysseus, after being away from home for twenty years (fighting the Trojan War for ten and being diverted for another ten trying to get home) arrives to find a hundred or so blokes trying to get hold of his household and wife; so he has to be very careful about how he makes his return known. He will be murdered if he is not careful. As he enters his court yard, his old dog, who must have been a very young dog when the war started, recognises his master and tries to greet him with a tail wag. Odysseus notices but dare not acknowledge the dog and passes by as though he's a stranger. Moments later the dog dies of a broken heart. How would you feel if you were Odysseus? I know how I felt just hearing about it...

    Anyone know if this was based on a true story?? Most old style country songs were. Been listening to this since 1950's, still cry every time. Now I look at my little rusty coloured Pomeranian and get so sad that I might outlive him. He is so spoilt he sits at the front door when either of us in not home. So really can relate to poor Rusty here. Sure hope it was not a true story.

    Slim dusty Don bradman and Phar lap (who was actually born in nz) are the three greatest australians for mine ... even if you are not a country music fan u r a slim dusty fan ... even if you are not a cricket fan you are a don bradman fan ... even if you are not a horse racing fan you are a phar lap fan ... getting back to this song i cannot work out for sure what war it is about ... can only think the first world war? or maybe the boer war?

    • @EarlJohn61
      @EarlJohn61 8 років тому

      +Bernie8330 I have always thought that Lord Howard Florey, one of the discoverers of penicillin, should be in that list. Because, great as those three are (and they are great) their influence has been limited to Australia (& Bradman a bit to the UK) whereas Florey's work is estimated to have saved over 81 million lives worldwide!
      He was born in Adelaide 24 September 1898 & died in Canberra 21 February 1968.
      Sir Robert Menzies, (arguably Australia's greatest conservative PM) considered him Australia's greatest.

    • @EarlJohn61
      @EarlJohn61 8 років тому

      +Bernie8330 As for which war, I think it must be the 2nd World War because it would've been written & released in the 1940's... Just after WW2 finished.

    • @Bernie8330
      @Bernie8330 8 років тому

      +EarlJohn61 No argument on Lord Howard Florey - I had just never heard of him. I was prolly only talking about more well known people and how they made people feel on a day to day basis when they were alive, rather than from the perspective of still saving lives long after their own is finished. Cheers and thanks.

    • @Bernie8330
      @Bernie8330 8 років тому

      +EarlJohn61 I don't know about that. Obviously Slim Dusty was only born 4 years after WW1, but I think an everyday Australian leaving his dog at the train station when going off to fight a war could prolly have more likely happened in WWI than II, and even more likely still in the Boer war. Still, it could be one of those things that has an eternal meaning and could relate to any war anywhere in any era before or since. Some of Slim's songs were based on personal experiences, others putting music to poems of others whose poems were based on personal experiences. An example is 'Sweeney' a poem Henry Lawson wrote after encountering a lonely drunk in a small outback NSW town in the late 19th century which Slim immortalised into a song. Cheers.

    Yes, strange thing that, this song reminds me of the Disney movie about the old Scottish man with the little terrier. When the old fellow died and was buried in the village cemetery the little dog slept on his grave for years only ever venturing away for food and water. That movie tugged at my heart strings, one of my friends walked Three miles as a kid Into town to watch a Lassie movie, the one where Lassie dies. My mate walked back home bawling all the way back to his house. Kick a dog In the guts and they'll still come back to be by your side.

    In the late 1950s the Australian Broadcasting Commission's radio station in New Guinea (9PA VLT6) used to play music on request. The most common song requested by natives was Rusty It's Goodbye. This was just 15 years after the end of WW2. I'm not sure whether they understood the words (eg: there was no railway there), or whether they liked the music, or whether they just liked to hear their names called out on the radio as people requesting the song. Nevertheless, every time the request show came on, this was the most frequently requested song.

    • @lloyd3404
      @lloyd3404 5 років тому

      As a side note: the ABC used to have a show called the Children's Hour, with a radio serial: "Tarzan, King of the Apes". As a 9-year old in Port Moresby in 1956 I once cycled over to the radio station to wait for Tarzan to come out. The naivety of kids.

    • @lloyd3404
      @lloyd3404 5 років тому

      In Port Moresby we "inherited" a cattle dog - because of quarantine restrictions, people could not take their dog with them when they returned to Australia. Our dog, a red heeler, was the most loyal, protective, loving family member. And then in 1961, after 6 years, we had to return to Australia and leave our dog to someone else. As I think of "Rusty It's Goodbye" I wonder how long it took (if ever) for our faithful dog to forget us. 58 years later I still feel sad about that.
