Ten months after this performance in 1996, Eva Cassidy died of melanoma at the age of 33, it was such a terrible loss. The recording of Over the Rainbow was first broadcast in Britain five years later and it went viral right away. She was a regular in Washington DC at a club called Blues Alley, where this was performed. She was such a versatile musician, thank god we have a collection of her remarkable recordings. I can’t help thinking that she knew she was going to die as she sang this song. It is so emotional and really touches the heart. Beautiful soul.
I think you are correct. I'm in the health care field and I think she was probably warned by her physicians that although the initial melanoma site was surgically removed ... melanoma was likely to metastasize
Great request! I want to cry when I think of Eva Cassidy, may she rest in peace. She was so talented and beautiful…her voice was incredible. I love the cover she did of Songbird…talk about crying❣️
The life of Eva Cassidy was sadly cut short by melanoma in 1996 at the age of 33. This rendition of the song "Over the Rainbow" was recorded just nine months before she passed away when she was battling the illness that would soon take her life. That fact makes this performance all the more sad but it was a brilliant and moving moment. Rest in peace Eva 🙏❤️💐🕊️.
Thank you for this lovely reaction. Small side note ... her musicianship had been recognized by a Washington DC icon - Chuck Brown. The Godfather of Go-go. Not a small feat. A style of music that deserves more recognition. You hear it and you have to dance. I live in the DC area and I can't fully explain what this recognition and collaboration meant. Just know it was Genius recognizing Genius
Her performances with Chuck Brown are phenomenal - I’ve only seen videos of them and I have a CD of the two of them. I love your description: Genius meets Genius.
This is a song that I thought everyone in the world knew. And that’s why Eva‘s version of it is so brilliant. She took a song that everyone knows and changed the melody a lot, putting her own spin on it, and even though it’s different from the original, it’s just as beautiful if not more so. She was a generational talent, and it’s so sad that she died so very young.
I don’t understand why your reactions don’t get thousands of views each. You listen respectfully, do research into the bands/music/genre, and listen carefully. Whereas some ‘reactors’ pause every 20 seconds, show pretend over-the-top emotions, and talk loudly without any real words of meaning. You deserve so many more views man. Thanks for persevering and continuing to listen to new music. We appreciate it.
Oh, I've hoped for so long that you would react to Eva! I know, without scrolling to look, that everyone is also asking for "Autumn Leaves", "Fields Of Gold" and others. Gone way too soon. RIP, Eva.
It's all breathy and quiet till she cuts loose towards the end, a real listening treasure. I don't know what it all means either other than there must be a better place and better times if we can just make something seemingly magical happen. Good to see you enjoying this one. You're doing great there.
Great reaction, and beautiful request! JJ , you probably saw the Wizard of Oz movie , growing up? It’s from that- Judy Garlands version is different , and shorter, but also beautiful, and of course, classic- the original version. And Eva Cassidy did many gorgeous covers- you might like some of her other songs as well ! 💜💜💜

Judy Garland sang about Oz. Eva is singing about heaven
This is one of my all-time favorite songs.
It was in the movie "The Wizard of Oz" 1939; sung by Judy Garland. There are many covers of this song. One of my favorite versions is by Eva Cassidy.
Thank you for sharing this magnificent reaction.

*Another beloved, iconic cover of this song is by the famous Hawaiian singer Israel ("Iz") Kamakawiwo'ole. He passed suddenly at age 38!*

Great choice!
This may be the best reaction to Eva Cassidy that I've ever seen.

She died about 8-9 months after this performance I believe.
No doubt you would’ve heard the original recording at one point in your life although it is arranged quite differently to this beautifull cover.
