  • In a process that took more than 18 hours of preparation and had crews working through the middle of the night, the ship that took down the Key Bridge on March 26 was buoyant just before 7 a.m. Then - she was on the move, slowly but surely. With the assistance of tugs, the ship was towed the 2.5 miles to the Seagirt Marine Terminal, moving at a speed of 1mph.
For the first time in almost two months, the Dali is no longer blocking the Fort McHenry Channel.
"When it first happened, everybody was saying it would be months and months, six to nine months to make this happen. But it just shows what you can do with a unity of effort - federal, state, locals all working together "U.S. Coast Guard Captain David O'Connell said.

The Dali's owners declared General Average, min April, so the containers and their contents can be arrested, and sold to part fund the salvage bill, when it arrives. The former owners will likely be able to buy their containers and content back, once an independent assessor has come up with a value.

    • @pingupenguin2474

Are you surd that is how it works ? It hardly seems fair if the owners of the containers ( mainly Mearsk by the looks of it) end up effectively paying part of the bill. Surely, if the shipping company ( the Dali's owners) are at fault, it should be them paying, not the owners of the containers, who did nothing wrong, have lost some cargo due to collision damage, and already have to compensate the owners of the actual cargo ?

@@pingupenguin2474 The principle behind this is that the only reason the ship was even there in the first place is because of the cargo, therefore, the cargo owners are responsible too. Because of this, maritime law allows the owner of the ship to spread the cost of the loss to all of the cargo owners. This is a risk you (not Maersk) assume when you ship cargo.

The port of Baltimore has a problem. All Ocean going ships to and from Baltimore pass right by he Virginia Ports which have been steadily improving over the last few decades. As an example, Virginia has an "Inland Port" and special trains run between the inland port to the harbor. Imported stuff is sorted out, passes through customs and sent on it's way via truck and rail in a relatively rural area with plenty of room.
