This is the best quote of 2020.
I would 100% agree with you 2020 absolutely fucking sucks
@@heilodin8721 now Angels get Eddie all to himself again
God , I remember watching his older videos : HIP HOP head reacting to metal . Now he has Metallica posters on his wall . He's one of us 🤘😂
But he doesn't react to metallica nowadays
Fuck yeah
Demon Maniac z probably listened to their whole catalog by now

One of us, one of us, one us......
Yesterday I started listening to Van Halen for the first time after 3 years of getting into rock. After 30 seconds of listening to the song Panama, I was like “damn this guitarist goes crazy “. After blasting about 15 songs of VH I fall asleep. The next day I find out that that guitarist had just passed away. RIP Legend, wish I had heard your music earlier :(
weird that you say so. This also happened to me. Everything you wrote was spot on. 😂 Remember I found out about Van Halen a day before they died. The guitar playing was so good I even started playing myself. However, the next day, I read that he died. I was in disbelief and after a night of binge watching eddie van halen interviews and Solos, I actually started tearing up. It’s weird because I had only heard about him for like 24 hour or so. but still.
You tune your guitar for standard tuning E A D G B E
Eddie ate dinner good bye Eddie
He has strings named after him, RIP rock legend.
@@godzilla6911 That’s actually really awesome, I’ve been taught similarly to that as well but didn’t know it was for this Eddie. Also for some reason I had the D taught to me as dynamite rather than dinner.
Eddie is so brilliant, he turned his guitar into a cello and then a violin
Jimmy Page actually did that.
This performance is genius! Mind blowing!!
For Van Halen, your fingers dont get tired, the guitar gets tired
or just falls apart from how worn out everything becomes lol
Eddie Van Halen is basically the Chuck Norris of the guitar world
Yeppers. The entire time I first listened to this I kept asking myself, "Is the guitar gonna make it?"
Exactly
Couple of things of note here:
1. Eddie was drunk off his ass during this show. I mean DRUNK.
2. Those segments during the performance are from every solo track he played on the band's official albums (316, Cathedral, Eruption, etc)
3. That guitar needed to be 18 in order for that performance to be legal
4. His eyes were closed 90% of the time, so even though he's playing on memory, he's also playing it by feel
5. Did you noticed that the audience was really loud.....until he started playing? People shut up and paid attention.
6. Sammy was genuine when he said "greatest rock n roll guitarist in the world", which says something, as Sammy is also a guitar player
316 wasn't released on an "official album" until 1991, For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge..
True, but still, it had been in his rotation for awhile. I only referenced the intro as 316 to keep the conversation simple.
you hear Eddie is not doing well? I heard that and it broke my heart. Eddie is like, our brother.
I can barely walk up a hallway straight when I'm drunk, let alone break out a musical masterpiece.
Very astute comment sir. This man CHANGED everything about rock guitar.
He is the GOAT......
Who’s here watching this again after hearing of Eddie’s passing? :’(
Still grieving
Yeah, I never tire of watching that solo.
He was virtually completely self-taught on guitar (and keyboards), and playing on his "Frankenstrat" - a single-pickup guitar he learned on his own to construct (with a whammy bar of his own patented design) using the body of a cheap Fender replica mated to a neck from a Gibson. No fancy pedals or effects, and played through a stock Marshall amp.
In the part where he was bathed in blue light, he was playing the strings with the left hand and using the volume knob with his right to produce that reverb effect!
No guitarist since Hendrix has had the mix of sonic inventiveness, sheer effortless virtuosity, innovation with techniques and construction, and musicality than Eddie Van Halen.
And you can see the joy he had in playing music and performing for people. He was also a rather down-to-earth guy - who knew he was good but didn't have the arrogance some other top-flight guitarists (like Steve Vai or Dave Mustane) seem to possess. His love of making music was infectious. What a talent, and what a loss. RIP EVH.
Self taught on the guitar yes but classically trained on piano

Fun fact about Cathedral: the solo is all tapping with the left hand while the right hand is doing volume swells for each note. No picking whatsoever
And this children, is why the band was not called "Lee Roth"
the fact that they were successful with BOTH singers says it all lol
well yes but no
Actually it was David Lee Roth who came up with the idea to call the band Van Halen. The band in this video is commonly referred to as Van Hagar, the Pop/elevator music era of the once great DLR fronted Van Halen.

Who else knew it was Eddie Van Halen who done the guitar solo for Michael Jackson - Beat It?
I thought that was common knowledge these days? I don’t know if this is accurate but I read somewhere a long time ago he did it for free, too.
John 5 and the creatures do a great version where john 5 does the vocal melody on guitar its pretty damn good
Yes he did by request of Quincy Jones

No cell phones, no Facebooking, tweeting, TikToking, picture taking, recording etc etc. just you and your friends enjoying the music. And if you weren’t there you could only hear about it from a friend who was there.
Wonderful times. The 80s were awesome!

That Cigarette Eddie Lights is for the Guitar.
Last cigarette, for the condemned.
I'm stealing that line.
For me

So I truly understand
Some people think Eddie was drunk doing this. No, he was sober. This show was filmed for two nights. The first night he was drinking, the second night, for which this solo was used on the film, he was sober. I saw him doing these solos many times and each time it was amazing. I, fortunately, was able to meet and speak with him and he was the nicest man. Legend. There will be no other like him. Ever.
This isnt " Eruption", its a long guitar solo, with pieces of" Eruption" sprinkled throughout....
That's how live solos tend to work. They use the same scale and motifs but do something unique to that show.
Andy Butterbaugh there is also a bit of Cathedral in the thrown in there too
Yeah right.... and Led Zeppelin never played "Dazed and Confused". Just a long guitar solo with pieces of "Dazed and Confused" sprinkled throughout... and Jimi Hendrix didn't play the "Star Spangled Banner" at Woodstock; just a long guitar solo, with pieces of the "Star Spangled Banner" sprinkled throughout... It's called IMPROVISATION. Musicians are known to do it sometimes.
@@carlmarks8170 Oh, sure. " Improvisation". The album version of "Eruption", is 1 minute 44 second instrumental. Adding almost 12 extra minutes to it, gos far beyond mere improvisation. This is Eddies " guitar solo" portion of the concert, a long solo, showcasing his many techniques, and including " Eruption" in its contents. Its not " Eruption", thats a 1 minute 44 second instrumental on their first album. When you say " Eddie Van Halens Eruption" to people, nobody thinks about a full on 13 minute, time filler solo in a concert. I stand by what I wrote.
it’s not **just** Eruption. Order goes as such: 316 into Eruption, Cathedral, the intro to Mean Street into Spanish Fly.
When Eddie first started to play Eruption live he played much of it with his back to the audience, just so he could keep his secret for a while.
Because he had the Pick of Destiny

Eddie said if you’re gonna play my drums I’m playing your guitar. The rest is history. One of the best drummers ever and maybe the best guitarist ever. Eddie and Alex VanHalen
Rock In Peace Eddie, you have brought a whole new meaning to guitar. May your legacy live on forever.
You were an icon to everyone, an inspiration for thousands, and a god...
I love that Eddie doesn’t even remember this bc of how wasted he was. Legend!
To be fair, would you remember ONE performance of a permutation of a solo you've been playing for 40 years through hundreds of concerts? Even without the alcohol and coke, I doubt anyone would recall 13 minutes of one night. But yes, he did go through the first 15 years of his career completely drunk and/or high before even trying to get control of it.
It is insane that one of the greatest live performances of all time was done while the dude was wasted...
@@pillertas2157 He was feeling himself heavy this night 🤟🏾
@@pillertas2157 A lot of long time alcoholics are what is called high functioning alcoholics. They can do many of the things that they can do sober without much deterioration. A new skill, no. But something they're familiar with, you wouldn't be able to tell they're drunk just by their performance.
Often we think of how we act when drunk, but it's not the same. Unfortunately, there's a type of skill almost in performing work when you have that much "experience" being drunk.
@@SoullessPolack thanks for the alcohol lesson
I'm sure it's already been said but I'm gonna say it anyway. Just in case you didn't know Eddie Van Halen is known as the godfather of the 5 finger tap. He made it famous. Everyone that does it now has EVH to thank
Yes, I read that they use that portion of this video as a teaching tool!
Vic Always all due respect...it is as they say, “hero’s are remembered but legends never die.” None of the artists that piggybacked off his genius would exist without him...who cares about the moths when the flame is so much more vibrant?
Vic Always he didn’t invent it but he revolutionized the rock world by making it popular.
Steve Lynch from Autograph wrote a book on tapping way back in 1972 after teaching himself the technique after seeing the Chapman Stick played for the first time. Autograph got the opening spot for VH on the 1984 tour and right before the first show, VH's management told Steve he couldn't tap because it was "Eddie's thing". Eddie might be known as the godfather of tapping to the casual rock fans, but all the players I know credit Steve Hacket of Genesis as the Godfather.
Dude. Eddie is a core musician and guitar player. The guy doesn't even listen to music anymore. Everything he does and makes is so creative. It doesn't matter how educated people are now. You cant compete with pure emotion on the guitar and Eddie has that in the bag. Eddie is the embodiment of a true guitarist. You can take a million painting classes and still never be better than picasso
Eddie is one of a kind, he invented the method of playing that is impossible for me to even keep up with my "air guitar"... You asked if there's any one out there who has the talent of an Eddie Van Halen... One and only one in my opinion... Stevie Ray Vaughan.
Stevie was a beast, he broke 13 gauge strings like they were 7.5s
Randy Rhodes was as good , unfortunately was .
Randy Rhodes was Eddie's equal!!!
It's spelled Rhoads, for the love of god!!!
And good as SRV is -and I love him-there would be no SRV if it weren't for Jimi Hendrix. I think that is the true difference between a brilliant guitarist like SRV and a game changing innovator like an Eddie VanHalen or Jimi Hendrix.
This just came up in my watch later queue today, the day he died. R.I.P. Eddie.
This isn’t “Eruption” this is Mr Eddie Van Helen at his fucking best! He’s playing different solos from other songs and put it all together to create this masterpiece🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻
Definitely. It had the general structure of Eruption, the pacing I'd say, the landmark phrases... with every other lick and trick he had in his arsenal thrown in. Pretty much the definition of Legendary.
Randy Adams it’s the solo I show everyone when they want to hear any EVH because he literally threw EVERYTHING he had at this solo. And it forms together beautifully

I was in my teens and a drummer in small bands and when he came out with this the playing field changed..All other guitarists were in awe and threatened.. No one had seen anything like this..
Van Halen equals to Bach of 20th century.
EvilChuck that would be yngwie
Not even close. Good guitar player but never has Eddie ever composed anything on the level of what Bach was capable of. And there are legit better guitar players.
@George Lynch Yes. I'm sure that 250 years from now Van Halen will be considered one of the greatest composers of all time and studied in every serious musical school in the word. I'm sure millions will still be listening to VH in the 23rd century.
Surely Bach's music was and still is enjoyable to millions of people. Or he wouldn't still be relevant today. let's not even get into comparing the complexity of their works. Pop music is generally considered enjoyable. Doesn't make it great necessarily. I highly doubt you've ever taken a serious look into Bach's music.
@George Lynch I think you underestimate the amount of people that listen to classical. It may not be their go to. But they do enjoy and respect it. There are concert halls and recitals around the world playing classical music in nearly every town.
I doubt VH will be relevant at all in 200 years. We can look at something like the early artist of The Grand Ole Opry as an example. Some of those artists were the most famous musicians in America and were well known around the world. Now, 80ish years later, they're nearly forgotten. In another 80 years they will be completely forgotten save for a handful of enthusiasts. I'd wager the same will happen to VH and almost all artist of the past 60 or 70 years.
“Boy’s making that guitar sing”. That’s EXACTLY what I said! Legendary!
Sing, scream, gush, blush; Eddie has the magic fingers that do it all, for guitars at least.

This man is a legend and was so incredibly influential. It cannot be overstated the way he was copied and imitated and then he reinvented himself on the next album. I think it is true that Eddie Van Halen despite , any problems he may have now, cannot be understated how much he has meant to music.
I do feel you need some Alter Bridge in your life.....
Agreed. best band today
God yes!!!!!!!!
Amen Brother!
Alter Bridge is awesome!
Well that’s the thing. Blues based artists like Richie Blackmore, EVH their respective bands and associated acts, tend to refer to it as borrowing, and for good reason. The blues has a specific sound that you can’t stray too far from, it’s understood that riffs and techniques even some songs (house of the rising sun) are open to use. Blues artists aren’t afraid of being influencers.
You find this in hip hop also which has lots of its roots in blues.
I've seen Van Halen 8 times in concert and had the privilege of meeting the band only once (Roth reunion tour 07) and 7 out of those 8 Ed was on his A game with the exception of the 04 tour which was a disaster. The guy personified what a Rock Guitar God was.

There is no such thing as "The Greatest", but he is one of the big ones for sure.
Now imagine the feeling if you are a guitarist and you get feelings of wanting to quit, wanting to play, hating him, worshipping him, joy and sadness all at the same time. While a small percentage of the guitarists could play something like Eddie's improv version (a point that I think is lost on non-guitarists or those not familiar with the original/album version) they could never come up with it. While there was a general structure Eddie basically winged it, assembling parts where he felt like putting them. One of the greatest guitarists EVER.

Legend has it people still haven't figured out what he did even now in 2019.
The melody starting at 8:19 was so beautiful and sensitive, I wish he would do a solo album of stuff like that. The beginning theme was pretty damned good too.
The segment of the song called "Cathedral" is amazing and I know of no other guitarist who can play like that
Every time you see that tapping technique, you can thank Mr. Edward Van Halen.
Nice reactiom video ... BUT I have news for you Bruh .. when you said "everytime I see someone doing that tapping thing ...", well you were watching the man who INVENTED IT!
Everyone since has only followed HIS lead! When he plays it sounds like 2 guitars because he uses BOTH HANDS .. he is known as "The King of 10 Fingers and 6 Strings!"
In this solo from Live Without A Net, the MASTER he shows how he plays one guiter as if were two, plays it like a violin (song Cathedral) with no strumming, plays it like a piano with two hands, and can play it like drums/bongos with the slapping and strumming/sliding!
Tappim, slappin, and sliding!
Ive been a VH fan since the beginning and I LOVE WATCHING MILLENIALS FIRST REACTIONS TO SEEING HIM PLAY because its literally like they just saw an alien land on Earth for the first time!
It is why I cant stand modern day rap and music in general ... ANY MORON can use his laptop to make a song .. but REAL MUSICIANS have real talent. Eddie just so happens to be an alien freak of nature.
BTW ... he basically learned guitar by assuming it as a piano, laying it down and equated the strings to keys. He is a Virtuoso guitar player .. with Arpeggios etc ... ie like a piano!
He is the greatest who will ever live!!!
you should check out nightwish my dude :) one of the best bands active today in my opinion
invented it? see ua-cam.com/video/yb26D8bBZB8/v-deo.html at 25:07
For god's sake. We are in 2020 and people still uneducated. He didn't invent it. Vittorio Camardese did way before. Even Eddie has said he didn't invent it. Eddie just made it popular in the metal scene.
@@TheFilyng oh look here it is. Told you I could find it.
Totally agree with you on modern music, most of it is computer generated and while it may take some skill to compose, definitely no where near the skill it takes to play an instrument, it’s why I feel older music much more than modern
Rip to this legend of a musician 🙏
And this is why he will always be missed & loved by rock n roll fans forever
For the love of god- Steve Vai, if you could do the kindness,
🤮
Can you react to slash ft myles Kennedy - driving rain. Or. Anastasia
"Standing Out In The Sun" was my personal favorite.
Anastasia is an amazing song!
"Anytime I hear that tapping technique, I'm just blown away." Little does he know that the man he is watching invented it.
Eddie didn't invent the tapping technique, he just perfected it.
False
that first little riff he does in the beginning is called 3 16. it was a sort of lullaby he'd play for Wolfgang when he was little. it's the date of Wolfgang's birthday 3/16/1991
