I am 63 years old and have been riding since the age of 8. I spent my High School and College days working in Motorcycle shops. I've had more motorcycles than most riders. Too many for this old mind to remember but close to fifty. I ordered a 2022 z900rs June 1. The first day an order could be placed and it delivered the end of September. This bike is hands down the most fun bike of the dozens I have owned. I can ride all day in comfort finding joy in each passing mile. I can afford any bike I want and wouldn't change my choice. If your thinking about a purchase DON'T. Just do it!

I'm piece by piece adding oem kawi accessories. A gold oil cap! Haa. Matches the wheels. 64 bucks what ta hell. The oem cover is ok but doesn't cover the front wheel below the fender. The dash trim is nice. It contrasts the turn signal indicators . The engine slider was expensive but is chiseled to match the turn signal housings. Thinking about the center stand next.

Just looked at a 2021 z1000 (2006 R1 my old bike) and ended up being torn between a 2022 z900rs and the Z1000.
The fit and finish on the z900rs is exceptional, that’s where the money is, especially against the z900 which I wrote off almost immediately (value for money of the z900 not in question). The z900rs it just feels “proper” so to speak. I walked from the shop without buying either I was so torn!
But a couple of days on now and I’m going back tomorrow for that RS!

I have a deposit on a 2022 Z900RS SE, supposedly the only one my dealership is getting. I tried to convince myself to save some dough and go with the regular Z900 SE, but the RS spec is just so much sexier. It doesn't have to be retro per sey, but I am not a fan of the alien transformer look that a lot of bikes call "modern". As for the price difference, well, metal is more expensive than plastic. A nice analog watch might not be as high tech as a digital one, but there's a reason a Rolex costs more than a Casio. If you are having trouble justifying the price, try doing what I did: selling a CVO Harley for it. It will seem like an astonishingly good value for the money, lol. 😂😂😂

    • @WaltInPA
      @WaltInPA  2 роки тому +2

I completely understand - the "futuristic robot bug" look takes a little getting used to. I think the retro bikes are more pleasant to look at in general.
When you put your deposit down on the 2022 Z900RS SE, did you get a timeline on when the dealership expects to have it?
There seem to be massive shipping delays right now and I'm curious if Kawasaki is as far behind as some of the other manufacturers.

I remember well as a young man desperately wanting a Z1 but couldn’t afford either the bike or the insurance. I have a 2018 Z900RS and I have to agree with your sentiments about pricing. However, I've found that ALL bikes are priced high these days and if I wanted something more improved, modern (whatever) it would cost me considerably more. It made more sense for me to upgrade the bike (rear shock and other stuff).

    • @WaltInPA
      @WaltInPA  2 роки тому

I think we're in a weird time right now. Due to supply chain issues and chip shortages, new bikes are being delayed. Because of the delays, the cost of pre-owned motorcycles is rising. One of the reasons I'm trading in my Honda is because the trade-in value is a couple hundred dollars less than I paid for it 2 years ago.
Now its a waiting game - I'm being told 1st Quarter 2022 is the best timeline they can give me on my order.

Hey man I feel ya on this and kudos for the end segment as well, I thought this was a good touch. I have decided the Z900 is going to be my next bike. I have decided it will be a 2020 or newer as I know some of the early models had some issues. I have found a couple in my area for about 9k during riding season but wasn’t ready to purchase yet. The SE really intrigues me but I’m not sure I’m a fan of the color scheme with that one. I do like the blue gold combo of the standard z900.

I was a little worried the end segment would make the video too long but it was either that (which I was very happy with) or re-record the whole thing and scrap everything I had done up to that point.
I'm not really a fan of yellow but I kind of like it on the SE. I'd imagine they'll do the same with that as they do the others and change it up from year to year. I'm only seeing the SE as the standard - not the cafe (hopefully they roll out a Cafe SE as well). If anyone is set on buying a brand new Z900RS, the SE upgrade seems like it is well worth the extra money IMO.
I've got mixed feelings about the Z650RS. It has more of a modern feel than the Z900RS - to me it does, anyway.

I've been riding my '18 Cafe since June '18. Zero issues. Most complaints are from people who are unable to adapt to the bike. 1st gear is tricky due to fuel injection... so learn how to work with it; 5th to 6th gear clunks... so figure out the sweet spot to shift; seat is hard... purchase a $20 air seat of amazon for those 200+ mile days; suspension is soft... so learn how to adjust it, stock Dunlops suck... wear them out put on some Michelins. If you can get a good deal on a pre-2020 go for it!!! This bike loves twisty mountain roads; it sucks to ride on the slab for long hauls. If I could get something for the slab I'd get a Connie... Safe Riding!

Chopper.. Some of the early z900 had an issue with the rear lower shock mount which they addressed with a recall. They strengthened the frame on the 2021 model. I have a 2017 z900 with the recall brackets installed and it is fine outside of the fact that I'm pissed Kawasaki could have made the blunder to begin with. I'm a member of a z900 owners group and there has not been one single issue reported with it. There are pictures on the internet of an abused Z with the bracket torn but it is suspect. I had the front and rear suspension rebuilt to my spec by DMS for $650 and I couldn't be happier with the bike. Don't shy away from an earlier model if you get a great deal. You can buy a low mile mint one for in the $6000 range.

just remember that all those "extra" costs are there for every new motorcycle you buy (legal, distribution, etc)... and the Retro Tax exists on every brand... XSR is also the costliest model for Yamahas MTxxxx line of motorcycles.

Why change it if it doesn’t need it The rs has all the updates. Owners do anyway. The problem I have with it. is why did they make it so tall. It looks like motocross bike when if anything it should look like a drag bike. Kawasaki, make it hight adjustable. If it had a lower centre of gravity it will improve cornering. Braking handling. It’s on stilts.

I just don’t understand this “price & value” talk when applied to the purchase of a motorcycle. This is about passion and getting exactly what you want. Most of us purchase a bike and then buy a bunch of overpriced add-ons to further customize it to our taste. I’ve had lots of bikes over the years. I’m approaching 70 so I don’t have the time to wait for a “good deal” to save a few hundred bucks. This summer I will have a 2024 Z900RS SE parked in my garage. I sure don’t want a #2 or #3 choice in the garage simply because it was a better “value”.

Interesting that your Z900 RS at $14500us is the equivalent of of about $22000 Australian, that’s about $3000 more than here in Aus.
There is a slight sense of cynical marketing effort by being charged more for the retro look ( they know it looks good and you will pay up)
And it does look good and rides beautifully. But these ‘feelings’ are part of the experience and they feel a bit negative to me. The other aspect is that while I love the look it does feel as if I’m being tricked , sort of a honey trap if you like. Romance over common sense, that also leaves me with a strange sense of anxiety as to whether I’ve made a good choice or am I a silly old burger who fallen for a pretty girl. I don’t know , but I’m probably not going to buy one either. I quite like your Honda however.

There is a reason to buy the Z900RS. It's because it's a reto on one of the most iconic bikes ever made. The Z1 or the KZ900. Why buy anything else. You don't really up grade a iconic bike much. Really I would have an original KZ900 with all new better up to date parts. I would never looks at the other bikes. They are ugly to me. I can understand where you are coming from. Where I'm coming from is an original buyer of a brand new KZ900 in 1976. So the other than reto models don't do anything for me. The money difference doesn't matter either. The only thing I don't like about the Z900RS is the ugly back fender & single rear shock. The back half of the motorcycle doesn't fit the front half. It probably needs a good set of 4 into 1 pipes also.

The RS is more than the z900 for a few reasons, biggest being the RS is built in Japan as opposed to Thailand for the z900.
The SE, if you don’t have a boner for Ohlins and the Yellow Ball paint, can be replicated with K Tech valve kit and K Tech shock. TBH, a shock and flash transforms the RS.

The truth is the Z900RS isn't for you. I just purchased my 2023 Z900RS in Diablo black and Imperial red, total cost on the road was $12,430. It is my opinion this bike was marketed towards us, the older generation that grew up owning the original Z1s and KZs. If you understand the history of the "superbikes" and how Kawasaki waited to release the Z1 and completely blew Hondas 750/4 out of the water with the Z1, you'll start to understand what exactly the bike represents. The new Z900RS is no longer the fastest production bike, but it doesn't have to be. For the generation this bike is marketed towards its a home run hit. Just to think Kawasaki pays homage to that time in thier/our history is very heart warming to us old timers. I for one no longer need the speed, but to be able to look at, and take a couple of hundred mile cruise remembering my old Z1s & KZs absolutely does it for me. Kawasaki has absolutely hit a home run with this retro bike. What's that worth to me......priceless.
P.S. this new bike is so much better than the old originals. I personally do not want all the modern electronics a go dad's, he'll I'd have paid more for my new truck if it didn't have all the gadgets it has. Just my humble opinion.

The Z900RS has more modern technology than the Speed Twin:
fully adjustable forks, mono-shock with linkage and adjustable rebound, modern tubular frame design, large LCD with tons of info incl. gear indicator that is discrete.
It's also 2in longer, has a larger fuel tank but weighs slightly less, much more comfortable seat and ergonomics, and is about $800 cheaper.
They are both good bikes, but the Triumph is an old tech bike with an old engine highly compressed to barely make 100hp and with some expensive parts (Marzocchi forks, Brembo M50 brakes) thrown onto an old frame and shock design.
The Z900RS is a truly modern bike dressed up like a classic Z1 bike from the 1970s. The engine is down-tuned for more torque, and the compression is much lower than the Triumph's (10.8:1 vs 12.1:1). Even so, for a few hundred Dollars you can tune the bike to make 120hp at the wheel (ECU mod, different down pipe, air box mod)!
Totally opposite approach from the Speed Twin. With the Z900RS SE you will now also get the fancy Öhlins suspension and Brembo brakes.
The main difference I see is that the Speed Twin is a classic bike with classic high torque, low RPM engine characteristic, while the Z900RS is a modern bike with a high power, higher RPM engine characteristic only dressed up to look like a classic bike.

BTW I'm in Az so my bike is rust free. if your serious about wanting the bike hit me up. $7500 cash will get it and I can help arrange shipping.

That sounds like a pretty good deal. If I were still in the market I would give some serious thought to it. I bought a Yamaha MT09 SP a few months back.
The funny thing about the Z900 RS Cafe is the first time I saw it, I didn't like it. It did grow on me though - I think if given the choice I'd take the Cafe over the Base Model now.

Back in 2018 I wanted the spark black Z900RS but I found a left over black 2017 speed triple 1050 s brand new for $10,000. A no brainer. I still have a crush on the Z900RS.

Walt, you have given good thought to your buying process...👍👍 .I am anxious to see what you chose!! 🤗 You will need new stickers and intro now!! 👏👏👏💯

I'm almost afraid to go down that path. Then I'd need a new logo, new intro, new channel stickers, new poker chips, and worst of all - a new hand made one of a kind motorcycle rock!
It is a waiting game now - the bike has been ordered since September and I'm still waiting on it to arrive at the dealership (those chip shortages and supply chain issues are becoming a real pain 😩)

@@WaltInPA I found a way around that: My "buy all the Lego" thing is just a way to "earmark" the funds for a new Z900RS without my wife complaining... then, once I've spent enough on Lego, I find someone who's willing to trade, or I sell all the Lego and suddenly have all this money to buy a Z900RS with! It's brilliant I tell ya!

My dilemma exactly. Do I go for an 900RS Cafe 2023 Black & Gold OTD$ for 13,500, or a Yamaha XSR 900 (Blue) for $10,700 OTD SSS. I think the RS will no longer be made and it'll get that desirability , but the XSR is modern, more power, cruise and quick shifter. I have an 2021 R9T-719 now, but keeping that, so this would be a second Bike I would love to go back and have an in-line 4, and that CP3 Engine is pure Gold....So I really have to Think...Be Safe

I found a stock 2018 Z900rs with 1800 miles last month, asking price was 8.5k, offered 8, and got it. I’ve put about 300 miles on it, and have to say so far I’m happy with my decision. It’s fun, and quick. Low range torque is amazing. I’m 6’ and it fits perfectly. There is a low seat option, not sure how much $$ for that, but I don’t need it. The money you save buying used can go towards any mods you want to make, or a bunch of new gear. So far the only thing I’ve done is add a radiator guard.
I’ve not noticed any of the problems you mentioned. The only thing I did experience was the sensitively of the throttle, some say twitchy or jerky. Yes it is sensitive, but I got used to it without any trouble. For new riders that could be a problem when encountering any situations that require quick coordination of braking, steering, and throttle control.

Sounds like you got a good deal. The last one I saw was around 8k (about two years ago). With the way pre-owned motorcycles have been climbing in value lately I would expect them to go for more than that 👍

@@WaltInPA yes, especially retail. I’ve seen them listed for as much as 10.9. It has the orange/brown metallic paint, and I believe that was extra by few $$. I just looked on CycleTrader and saw one, must be a holdover, with 6 miles, it’s listed for 12.7k, unbelievable. I could probably resell it for a tidy profit, but then I’d just want another one. Maybe I can hold onto it for a couple years, get my money back, and find a used Z900rs SE model. For the difference I’d spend right now I could add another bike to the garage.
