    Your spot on here. Wing chun is more a set of concepts then it is anything else, I also practice bjj & Kali/eskrima. There is so much you can take from wing chun to help you do these arts in a "wing chun way" if that makes sense. Consequently, theres a lot you can then bring back into WC from these arts & teach in for mentioned wing chun way.

    Randy Williams is great usually. This is not his best video by any means, but I love how he explains things. In reality, people wont give you time to use those kind of techniques, but they are useful basic training tools. What I like about Randy is that he doesnt big himself up or claim to be anything he isnt. He just does what he does and a lot of it is very interesting stuff

    Finsih, the system, then spend time around other practitioners out side of your club. Be respectful, ask questions, learn from them. Then decide which system works best for you, & be in a btter position to judge what you think works better. Just keep in mind, what works best for you doesn't necessarily work best for everyone -

    It wasn't until I started BJJ at age 50 that I began to understand the limitless, practical nature of Wing Chun. Unable to hit, stick and move or things like gouging, ripping, or attacking fingers and necks I was extremely vulnerable to takedowns by the rules of engagement and their experience in that environment. I had to learn how to grip fight and Wing Chun became my goto. To the point that a Year later my instructor said "You are a hard person to take down." Not that it was a problem for him. LOL. But, when facing blue belts and even some purple belts I was a tough target, and learned how to land on top, regain top position and even scramble back up. elbows in, control the elbows and maintain structure, clear And close centerline, redirect, if your wrist is controlled use the elbow regain control. use the circling of the wrist to escape being controlled even by the sleeve. It can change your game if you are open minded to it. I never trained with Sifu Williams but devoured his content and it's obvious he has both legitimate high level teaching and real world experiences.

    Mr Daniels just because wing chun dose not have head butts doesn't mean Mr Williams won't use them as seen in the video. wing chun has ground fighting as well as stand up. I believe Mr Williams has had share of combats especially in the work he's in and has always came out on top. my opinion he's been around a long time, and still is the best in what he does.

    I just want to make sure we're on the same page here. Traditional Wing Chun started with William Cheung, he invented the term, it started with him & for better or worse it is simply his version of the system & not some secret ultra deadly version of the system that he alone was taught by Yip Man.

  • @markb.739

    This is a master class on why Wing Chun fails on the street today. No attacker is going to stand there after he throws a punch or kick and let you counter with an elaborate set of techniques.

    • @mightymeatmonsta
      @mightymeatmonsta 7 років тому +4

      Some will. And if they don't, your training will be able to handle whatever he has in mind. And these techniques are not elaborate! Do you even know what that means? They are simple and basic and very efficient, which is the wing chun way.

      @@jacobharris954 It's actually sad to watch, everyone pretty much has watched MMA and seen it's effectiveness in real fighting. This stuff is probably ok against a drunk fighter that throws a sloppy non boxing type hook as we are watching. Anyone with any form of training is going to ruin the lie they are being taught unfortunately and possibly get seriously hurt. I studied Wing Chun and quickly moved on to boxing. There is no comparison. Watch the video of the boxer with one hand behind his back that beats a legit Wing Chun master. It's pretty sad. I would think in the next 20 years, traditional martial arts will be almost extinct. Hiding the truth from people is getting harder and harder with the internet. I have seen a million real fights on UA-cam and never have I seen a chop to the neck EVER work. It's this guys bread and butter attack........

      @BlackDragonModernCombat 5 місяців тому

      @@markb.739 I respect & appreciate your opinion. I just watched the so called WC master. Sorry, but he looked like another sloppy white belt sparring, doing all the typical stupid things. It shows the gap between really applying your training [as boxers do everyday] and just going through the motion. I can tell you that there are 'real' schools of combat that train as boxers & wrestlers do and can apply real Wing Chun or Choy Li Fut. It seems all the dumb stuff hits YT!

    • @markb.739
      @markb.739 5 місяців тому

      @BlackDragonModernCombat that guy in the video absolutely 100% thought his Wing Chun was superior to the boxers style. The problem with Wing Chun today is that everyone is trying to fit a square peg into a round hole. Wing Chun was designed to fight other martial artists and untrained fighters of the day. Today, everyone is watching MMA, and even the untrained understand advanced fighting concepts. Most untrained Street Fighters are using some generic form of MMA. They are mimicking what they are seeing. Wing Chun is the equivalent of trying to use a Windows 98 computer today. Sure, you can upgrade some of the components but it will never work like a modern computer. It's the same story over and over when Wing Chun artists take on MMA or boxers. They're trying to use an art form for a purpose it was never designed for.

    That's the best way to train, forms need to be trained with correct power in intention - but going slowly refines technique and ensures every movement is correct. Its a good way of avoiding bad habits leaking into your forms.

  • @Gunslinger800
    @Gunslinger800 11 років тому

    Finally, traditional vs modified. This argument seems to have been raging for as long as WC has been on the internet. From what iv learned from the community at large & I can give you some links if youd like - William Cheung did not learn directly from Yip Man. That isnt to say he didnt go to his school, but he learned primarily from Wong Shun Leung under Yip Mans guidance. Keep in mind William Cheung has since confirmed this - & this was only Siu Nim Tao before he moved to Australia.

  • @DylansTracks

    Your hands and center line must match your opponents height, raise your hands for taller people, lower them for shorter, so you're always using your center line on theirs. If they throw just one punch, I would suggest the bong/tan at the same time, then go straight in on your center line. If he throws two punches, go to his outside, using your low kicks to the knees, minding the reach of the opponent and close with a head butt to the nose. Stay off his angles, stay ON yours. Iv studied WC for 10 years, im a certified Sifu, I move around, I ought to know what I do or dont do. more complex footwork emphasising realignment, circular footwork and weight transfer are also explored extensively through the 8 Baat cham do forms as well as the Luk dim boon guan. If you lucky enough to have a school that teaches them, they follow Biu jee.

Iv never trained with anyone whos trained under William Cheung, from what iv seen, its not for me - but I wouldnt bash without having trained it.

    I have no probs with Muay Tai its a great style, & I have no probs talking with people who dont like WC so long as theyve spent time training in the system before they talk about how it doesnt work for them. What annoys me is its harder & harder to have a WC conversation without some troll in a TAPOUT shirt whos probably never trained in anything taking over and talking MMA vs... totally kills it for me.

  • @Gunslinger800
    @Gunslinger800 11 років тому

    Don't take what if said as an attempt to diwade you from training under his system. If it works for you - fantastic, keep at it. Just keep in mind you've only done 1/3 of the system, so you may want to keep criticism of other types of wing chun in check until your a bit more experienced.
    Can William cheung fight? Don't know - haven't ever seen him fight.

    I agree with most of what your saying, but depending on how your school teaching everything from chum kiu onwards, the 50/50 stance may give you problems. That being said, if you've got a good teacher then I'm sure he has his reasons & can make it work.

    I mean no offence by asking that, I'm simply curious. It's been quite a while since I've heard someone bring up the so called "tradional" wing chun.

  • @Gunslinger800
    @Gunslinger800 11 років тому

    Well, I think it been pretty clearly established that he learned Siu nim tao & maybe the start of chum kiu whilst in Hong Kong but no more. Im still confused by the terminology thought. By all account William Cheungs claim is that he alone learned the actual secret version of WC (something we know to be un true), what everyone else learned according to him is modified. It sounds as if your using those terms in a different context?

  • @Gunslinger800

    As a matter of fact I didnt. Im confused. I you except that the term traditional is something which William Cheung made up, & that the majority of his alterations are of a non Yip man origin (most likely himself), how do we get to Yip Ching also doing Williams Cheungs version of WC!? Also, to your mind, if you except that Cheung created traditional - where does "modified" come from?

    This is what I'm trying to tell you. I do understand the two - very well in fact. I mean no offence, but you haven't finished one version of the system yet, so your not really in a position to say you truly understand any version just yet. Keep in mind, there is no traditional vs modified. This is an extremely effective business model created by cheung. Cheung did not complete the system under yip man, he doesn't have any secret knowledge. He just has his version of the system.

    Ah right, I see where you are. The term traditional & modified comes exclusively from William cheung. There is disparity between the WC taught by the various students of yip man but that's a whole conversation in itself. The thing is, as time went on peoples admittance to the yip man club depended on the depth of your pocket. Remember, he had a terrible opium habit to feed. Most of the teaching would come from his seniors.

    Yes, William Cheung. As he is the man solely responsible for the divergence between traditional and modified Wing Chun as you call it, and claims to be the only person teaching it - obviously including Sifus registered under him.

    I just wanted to add - I havent been following this thread until you started messaging me.
    In your own words, in what way do you feel the so called "traditional" system created by William Cheung differ from the Yip man system? Why do you feel it's better? What EXACTLY do you mean when you say "modified" as you put it, has no footwork? Do you mean to imply they simply stand still?
    Again, no offence is intended, its just that you have alot to say for someone who's just started chum kiu.

  • @brew8537

    Its all good as long as you know its coming or you already have contact with your opponent. Otherwide a jab takes .2 of a second to hit you and your eye seeing it and you reacting takes longer than the jab taks to land. A Bong Sao is much to slow. A pak Sao would be what I would use against a Jab whilst using Chi Sao

  • @Gunslinger800

    Cheungs influence of Bruce lees has also been greatly exaggerated by cheung. Remember, he only started making these claims after Bruce and yip man were dead. Bruce's JKD influences/adaptations to his wing chun base came almost exclusively from boxing & fencing.

    the weight ratio - to be honest I go back & forth (no pun intended) on this. I think it depends on the preference of the practitioner. Iv seen people who prefer 50/50 as they have done other styles, some for medical reasons as its easier - if your out of range standing naturally or in yee gee kim yeung ma, its 50/50 as its non committal. Shifting into juen ma - for me its about 60/40 with obvious margin for error. I dont like 50/50 for a forward stance & I wasnt taught it that way.
