This is simply the best of all the SHALLOW tutorials, bar none. I've tried them all and there is no contest. If I can learn it at 75 years old, anyone can!
David I’ve been out of guitar for 35 years. I saw this movie and could not get this riff out of my head. Spent a lot of time on the Internet trying to find a good lesson on this, thank God finally landed on your site. I had this intro down in three days with a lot of practice. I was never very good before and self taught but I love guitar. My wife was amazed at how I played this song after your intro lessen.....played over and over half speed feature I loved . So I just signed up to be a patron member. looking forward to getting back into guitar like before I was married. Great lessons, well done, you’re awesome. the music’s playing back in my northern Wisconsin household. thank you
Hey Frederick! This makes me so happy to hear! I’m very glad the lesson was helpful, and I truly hope my other lessons (past and future) continue to keep the music playing in your home. All the best, and thanks for your support! Be sure to send requests anytime. DP
You're making me cry Fredrick. It hasn't been 35 years for me but, it's been a while since I picked up the guitar. But, after seeing this movie and finding out Cooper learned to play in only 6 months, that got me to pick it back up again and have been playing "Black Eyes" almost EVERY DAY! But, I never thought I could tackle THIS song. What a great teacher David is. I'm only at my first lesson today and I've gotten down the first part so far. Awesome!
It was 24 years for me. Started again 6 months ago. It's been a journey and I'm loving every second of it. looking foiward to learn this song and play it to my wife. She's gonna freak out!
I've been learning from youtube for at least 4 years, This is the best guitar lesson I've seen online - it has timing, how to work up a picking skill/pattern, how to play based on skill level, strumming pattern, tabs to view while playing, not rushed through. Great!
You are so lucky to be growing up with such a great learning tool matey. Back in my day you taught yourself by listening, then working on what you heard. No watching finger positions, no tutorials:)
Thanks man I've spent about 20 minutes a day for a few days trying to learn I almost got it. I'm very new to guitar. I'm so happy to start playing and couldn't do it without videos like this. Thank you so much
Heartwarming to read the positive comments especially those who are starting again after so many years. I’ve been playing over 55 yrs now and my age is starting to rob me of many pleasures ...keep playing and most of all have fun. David, a very well explained tutorial.
Haven’t picked up my guitar in years, this video has me working through the intro to this song which I love. Going to continue working on it. Than you!
I'm not AT ALL an advanced or even intermediate guitar player, I was going to skip to the easier version but you broke it down so well that I just practiced the full version. Great job and thanks!
You are an amazing teacher. I was learning from some random tabs, and came across your video to see someone play it. You have a knack for teaching. Thanks for breaking it down and giving helpful tips throughout.
I love this song! Especially the part where Lady Gaga does her 'ooohs and aaahs' gives me goosebumps and sometimes puts tears in my eyes. Thanks for your lesson. I've picked up the good old acoustic again and immediately subscribed. Thank you for making it so clear!
Thanks, man. Sometimes I forget you can find anything on UA-cam. My wife loves this film and soundtrack. You saved me from working it out for myself. I'm learning it as birthday gift for her on March 7th. No better gift than that of music.
easy money bro, had it down in less than two minutes! I watched you play it once, then paused it on the tab and got to work. I've been playing for over 30 years and took a bunch of lessons when I was a kid. I was too lazy to transcribe this song myself, and you are a very good teacher! Pay attention people, this man will take you places if you are learning. Thanks for taking time to do this.
Well I had no fingerpicking experience, but your method of teaching is so next level!! I got to learn a gr8 song and I got to learn fingerpicking... Thank you for making a start for me!!
Thank you soooo much for this course. You make it easy to play. I just need to practice more. All I need to learn is all of the cords and learn to read the music sheets. I play piano by ear. Which is not a good way to learn any kind of instrument. But I am going to keep on trying. Thank you thank you so much. Have a great day and keep on playing on you tube. 👍🫶🥰
Amazing song, and a very cool lesson. Although pretty simple to pick by ear and to play, this kind of detailed explanations are extremely useful for beginners and I really lacked that stuff some 15 years back. Good things you do, man. Love those words you say about not trying to do everything exactly like it is done in the original, and just follow the main idea but arrange it the way one finds more appropriate. Always follow this way.
This is going to be great at a party. Dont give up playing people, ive been learning from youtube for many years and this is the guy you would want to learn from. He explains the chords really well.
This is awesome! So many great things here: 1. It sounds like the original! Sad to say but often lesson don't really :( 2. You're an amazing teacher! 3. You teach us how to teach ourselves. You show us how to practise, which is really rare and super duper awesome! Thanks so much! If I had the $ for Patreon, I would. You're amazing!!
This is a brilliant and simple picking variation to do for the verse without having to switch from picking to finger strumming. Mind blowing! Thankyou!
Dear David, it is absolutely awesome that you spend time to dedicate to us a tutorial for Shallow. You do it so well with explaining with the ring finger at the intro, as well with your comments to encourage us, that some things need time to practice. I recommend your video. Big thumbs up. Thank you so much to brighten up my music sessions
Thank you so much David. You play beautifully. And, your teaching style is so laid back and simple. It really helped me. Ever since I saw this movie, I picked my guitar up again. (It's been a while). I've been playing "Black Eyes" almost every day! Love that song. But, as I wrote in another comment, I never thought I could tackle this song...well, until I found this video. After just a few minutes, I got the first few chords and finger picking style and will work on them to get them to flow and then, come back for more. So appreciative. Annette
Being a complete Guitardo, I really like the idea of keeping the ring finger on the same fret throughout the song and realized I could still keep it there in C If i used my pinky to pick G5 instead of B1. Tip if you struggle with smooth chord changing like I do. Great lesson!
hi, im indonesian here, my english is not good, but this video help me a lot, simple but straight to point, this is the best progress of my guitar to practice guitar finger style, thx dude,
With all respect for you. I not only learn this awsome song, I also now know how to read tabs and chord. Thank you so much for the awsome vid. Keep it up.
This lesson is a fantastic I picked it up instantly have subscribed, and thumbs up ! For those like me who cannot hold down a barr chord just finger fret 2,3 and 4, it works fine for Bm.
Simply awesome! I'm at my first time on guitar practice and i made it..well not perfect but still working on it ..thanks to your lesson: U R bedt teacher ever. I'll follow your chanel..thanks!
Thank you so much for taking the time to teach me this song my wife's asking me to learn it for her and you really helped me and her a lot I really appreciate your time and effort thanks again
sir you are fantastic guitar teacher !! because you explain how to have a better connection and relationship with your guitar and that my friend is a gift !! thank you
Unbelievable that anyone would give this guy one single thumbs down. How much more clarity and detail do you need? From the playing the song first, to the Tab notation, then chords, simple version, full version, notes over lyrics...so cool. This is my first comment on UA-cam and my first follow :) Awesome job sir! Simply awesome! Everything.
Thank you Sir! This is a really brilliant tutorial. Thank you so much. My little daughter loves this song so much and I gonna play it with her on her grandma´s birthday party. You explain that song so well that I really have the feeling that I got the core of this song.
I usually just go to Marty, but this lesson was FAR easier for me to follow because I'm such a giant noob/beginner. I feel with your guide I could (eventually) learn this song. Thank you.
This is the best tutorial I have seen for this song. Thank you! I am a true beginner and need to learn the basic chord formations to aide me in playing this correctly and more easily.
Finally decided to tackle tab. Glad I came across this tonight. Just saw the Oscars and cant stop singing this song. Now im going to learn it. Love your calm teaching style.
EXCELLENT! and I mean excellent tutorial! It had all the aspects one could want. Precise picking, alternate strumming options, and you gave a sense of how to create musical freedom in playing. Often musicians think it has to be exactly how the artist or tab says it is. That's not the purpose of the guitar. It's to express yourself in each individual's own way. It needs to flow and instill a smile after you've gotten lost playing for awhile, forgetting the troubles of the world and life. Meditation and fun! Thanks for sharing and keep sharing, it's honestly too notch teaching! Cheers 🍻
Love the way you structure it all and the calm tone of your voice which helps being patient with myself somehow. Best youtube guitar tutorial channel 100% and i saw them all haha

I've found that if I play the C with just the index and middle finger on the B & A strings respectively (leaving the ring finger for the hammer-on), it makes the transition to G effortless. It took me a good 15 minutes to get used to playing the C that way, but now it's locked in muscle memory! I even find it easier to sing while playing. Great video/presentation btw!
A bit of a stretch for me. What I was going to suggest is where you (David, that is) say that the transition from C to G is non-trivial, there is no need to go to the full G shape. You can leave the pinky on the 3rd fret of the B string where is already is and just shift the ring finger from the 3rd fret of the A string to the 3rd fret of the low E string while lifting the first and second fingers.

Are the chords the same on an electronic guitar? (Sorry that this is such a basic question, but I'm about to teach myself to play.) Thanks!
@@milahjae5228 exactly, but a few more frets, so a bit higher range:/
Hey can you pls do a full tutorial on "Shallows" by Daughter?
