- In this video I'll be growing corn with Kratky hydroponics! We take corn from seed to harvest with this plant, showing all stages of corn growth and doing everything with hydroponics.
We'll be going through all of the following:

Who knew corn would make a stunningly beautiful houseplant.
Yellow and withered leaves
= Nitrogen deficiency.
Suspension of growth, mixed grain sizes (small and large)
= Potassium starvation.
K helps with a firm, healthy stalk.
P helps with big root system. Also results in higher crop quality, faster crop maturity, and increased grain count.
Corn loves lots of sun. The ideal growing temperatures should be from 60 to 95°F.
Leaving the roots soaked all the time does not allow the roots to fully develop.
Ideal pH is between 5.8 to 6.8.

So would a regular siphon system circulation work with corn?
This type of yellowing is a typical symptom of iron deficiency.
Iron is not able to be remobilized from older to new leaves in a deficient plant, unlike nitrogen or magnesium. Therefore, Fe deficiency is characterized by yellowing of the youngest leaves. When growing corn hydroponically I had the same problem, which I solved by adding DTPA Fe in the solution and the corn leaves turned green in 2 weeks.
So it sounds like he might be able to make it work if he;
1) Gave it more fertilizer (including supplement with iron)
2) Put it in a flood and drain system rather than DWC
3) Got a stronger grow light (and maybe put it in a tent that had reflective walls so that light would be reflected onto all parts of the plant).
95 degrees is almost boiling point by world standard.

Very cool! Try growing with 5-6 stalks or 10 to 12 in the same growing area if you can (as in all getting same water in same tub). Corn is designed to grow in groups, it may grow healthier. The yellow could be due to loneliness of the plant.

...also, another mistake I made initially in my 5 gallon home depot buckets was filling the solution too high. By keeping the solution level at only about 70% helped oxygenate the plant better
I used to add like 5ml of hydrogen peroxide per 1 or 2 gallons of water helped keep it oxygenated looking to try this at home too thanks 4 the video !!

Hey Jimmy - had the same exact problems you had when I did the same exact set-up in my condo 3 years ago. The second go around, I bought a clip on light on Amazon for under $20 bucks that had 4 separate wands. I used the 4 wands on the lower leaves. On the 3rd go around I started spraying the leaves with folige fertilizer spray every 10-14 days. I used the same spray recommended for indoor meyer lemon trees. I think it’s called dyno grow foliage spray
...keep in mind there are different kinds of foliage sprays “M-P-K” and there is a difference between indoor sprays vs outdoor sprays

The next go around worked great. I think giving all the leaves/lower leaves more grow lights helped turn my leaves greener
I did this but outside, last year. It was very stunted and had stripes like yours also, i think mag deficiency but my nutes never fixed it with more. Prob need differnt nutes. Great vid

Really cool video I didn’t know anything about corn until now lol, it would be really cool to see you do a hydroponic pumpkin on your balcony, I just bought some heirloom seeds off amazon that are supposed to produce giants and was thinking about trying to do it in some kind of hydro medium in my grandmas yard. I wouldn’t suggest using these particular seeds on your balcony though you won’t have any way to dispose of the pumpkin when your done other than drop it lmao.

If you add an airstone to the bottom of your 5 gallon bucket you will have healthier roots and much better results in all your hydro growing

@@scott98390 You don't need banana leaves, you can just use the old banana peel. Personally I don't buy any feed, I just put all my kitchen scrap in a bucket of water and it rots and turns the water black> I then dilute the black water with the water in the hydroponic setup. The spare pulp can be left in and keep going, but the competitive inhibition of bacteria on it kind of slows down the decomposition so instead I feed it to a worm farm. I use the soil from the worm farm for in soil planting like potatoes, or sometimes dilute a little bit of it in a kratky style hydroponic setup for the nutrition, but soil makes the water viscous so it won't work in any hydroponic system that uses a pump.
Which brings up the other factor that aeration of the solution may be why the corn wasn't doing well. Even if roots above are exposed to air, plants do much better when the solution itself is aerated.

Lack of light my friend. An HLG Scorpion Diablo would pump out some nice corn I bet! A fan blowing a slight breeze on them would also cause them to build up tougher stalks to be able to support themselves. How high did it end up getting? Did you swap nutrients to more of a bloom cycle when it started flowering and silking?
Thanks Tom! Plant was probably 4 feet tall at the end, after I had cut off the tassel completely. And yes, I added a ton of flowering additives while it was sulking and the ear was beginning to develop. Was up around 1400ppm which I thought was high. There’s a very broad range listed online as ideal. I look forward to trying this again with some summer sunshine!!

What do you use to create air flow? That makes good, heard stalks. What you had was an ear of corn that would have been more adapted to hydroponics. Next time, get open pollinated dwarf (like Bantam) and save the seeds. You also need more nitrogen and potassium, and perhaps more phosphorus. I like water from worm beds.

This was actually pretty successful and I think if you planted more you'd have done better. Corn apparently likes to grow in clusters as opposed to the traditional rows. I had a lot of success with an outdoor grow due to a very tightly packed row that I planted. I intend to try this but to put four netcups on one bucket and a chickenwire support cylinder around it. You have a good proof of concept, either way. I think you may have just harvested a little too early, since I had some cobs like that from my outdoor grow.

Just put a multicolor corn 2 weeks ago, will try with combining the nutrients from GHE flora series to try to make it stop growing to tall and flower earlier instead.

I'm trying some veggies in dwc for the first time. All in doors. I'm trying to do three corn some kale some lettuce tomatoes peas and green beans. I don't know how it will work but I'm trying to use that liquid fish fertilizer for nutrients I'm just using quite a bit less than what it recommends when your spraying and on the soil I can always add more later

Hello Jimmy B., Greetings from N. Kentucky! I stumbled upon this video, while attempting to find one specifically for growing Bantam Corn, Hydroponically, so I watched this from beginning to end. I'm just learning about hydroponics, and recently purchased a basic setup (Hydroponic tank with 5 inserts) from Menard's, here in Florence, KY. I've never heard of Kratky hydroponics, so I'll need to learn more about it. My biggest challenge is how exactly do your go about doing the pollination, for indoor growing? My main reason for choosing the Bantam variety, is because they are the perfect size, for confined spaces, as they grow a maximum of 6 feet in height. I'd really appreciate any information you might be able to provide, regarding indoor pollination. Incidentally, the video was so informative, that I went on to watch a few more of them! Thank you!
Pollinating corn is pretty straightforward! When the tassel opens up top, grab it off and rub it on the plant down below where the leaves emerge from the stalks. The tassels are full of pollen. I think i demonstrate this in the video.

Glad you enjoyed it! My tap water comes in at a ph of 7.2 and TDS of 120. After adding in my nutrients it would ph in the 6-6.1 range, my TDS with this corn was 1100-1300

My hydro is outdoor , I have 18 buckets , I'll try corn, and just corn my peppers morphodited because I mixed them with tomatoes , the tomatoes dominated and starved out the peppers from nutrients. Thanks I'll try this

that a hardcore Nitrogen and magnesium deficiency , you could use a aquarium air pump roots like aeration, that why more professional avoid getting the roots 24/7 under water , one method spray them from time to time
I planted some corn I germinated on soil but some remained so I'm interested to check if they can really grow with kratky method...

I used tap water and nutrients. RO or distilled would be even better if you’ve got it, but not necessary. I used Future Harvest nutrients for this plant, and use Advanced Nutrients often as well. I’ve got links in the video description to where you can find both those products

If you put it in a reflective tent thing, it would have done better. Yellow leaves mean bad nutrients, nitrogen probably.
My comment is 2 years after the video posted and the video poped up on a Google search of all things..
I'm looking into corn as a candidate for a hydroponics/aquaponics greenhouse I want to set up. The nitrogen deficiency might be covered by the fish side of the aquaponics system. Fish waste and certain bacteria make nitrates.
It's also good to know that an all around uv setup would likely work better than just overhead. I don't know if I will have transparent walls on the greenhouse or go straight UV only with solar panels. Thanks for the proof of concept video and I appreciate the propagation portion.

It needs nitrogen. What do you have in the water?
Here you go... Fertilize the plants with a 16-16-8 liquid fertilizer when the corn plants have reached a height of 4 inches, but before it reaches 8 inches tall.
Fertilize the plants again when they are about 10 inches tall. This is best done by side-dressing, rather than applying fertilizer directly on the young plants. For this application use a 46-0-0 (all nitrogen) fertilizer product.
Add nitrogen one last time once the sweet corn ears begin producing silk, using 46-0-0 nitrogen fertilizer according to product application directions.

...reading the other comments, although initially, most hydrophobic growers think it’s a nutrient issue ie had problems with end rot with indoor tomato & zucchini plants, it usually has more to do with filling your solution too high and not allowing your roots to breathe in oxygen. Assuming, you are using the right portion of your nutrient solution & making sure you mix the ingredients in the correct order....you will eliminate most issues involving the roots inability to draw up the nutrients needed for the vegetable to grow healthy
...and as you already stated, you need to provide enough LED/grow light to green up the leaves. Also foliage spray may help

Great try. But you did get better results than my corn did outside in garden. Im afraid i can be no help at suggestions. My first thought was that it doesnt get enough sun, or correct temps. to be happy. Im thinking yellow sometimes means just too much water. Ebb and flow might produce a better yield instead of it sitting in water. Maybe it needs iron. If its too cool the corn has trouble absorbing nitrogen. 80 to 90 f degrees is best for corn, is what i read. Great project.take care.

ph levels checked regularly? if hydroponic then should be in the range of 5.9 to 6.2 (more acidic in hydro setups). the water source also influences the health in hydro; if tap water is used then make sure you've left the water to sit in an open bucket for 24 hours to remove chlorine additives from municipal water sources before adding. adding about a quarter tab of the regular Vitamin C (crushed up) will also remove the chloramine if your water source has that added too. afterwards, do a check on the ec of your water source before adding feed/fertilizer. if using distilled or RO water source then your EC should be near 0. btw, EC is a more universal standard to measure dissolved salts in a solution. Others in the hobby less commercial refer to a TDS measurement when determining the amount of fertilizer in solution but TDS levels can vary from meter to meter (based on how the manufacturer programs their algorithm into their device) so if you have a meter that measures both tds and ec, best to convey EC measurement as it's universal on all meters.
ec levels in hydro should be dependant on the amount of light your plant is exposed to. the more ppfd delivered to the plant, the more EC you can get by without burning. most nutrient/fertilizer feed charts assume you have your plants in direct sunlight (for the ppfd measure) so don't need to feed 100% to the feed chart (more like start at 30% and work up until you notice some tip burn, then scale back a bit and that's your sweet spot). It takes about one/two grow cycles to better understand how your environment is affecting your feedings. we usually grow at an EC of 1.1-1.6 during veg and 1.8 during the flowering of any vegetables and that's under a ppfd level of 1450. any supplemental light source needs to consider the natural light when considering if you need to supplement with a grow light. if growing indoors even next to a window with sunlight, adding blue light to the spectrum will cause the node spacing to be smaller, which is better for the indoor growing of corn.

maybe the plant is yellow because the light is on constantly? drying the plant out? it needs a fan for wind as staying still forever is boring and also tone of darkness and coldness it needs at night.

@@JimmyBHarvests yep. Healthy plants should be dark green with the corn stalk being the diameter of a half dollar. Usually capable of supporting their own weight at maturity without toppling over. By the looks of your the ear, you were also deficient in N&P&k (nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium) the most important nutrients ahead of sulfur. At best you could have 2-3 ears growing on it with each ear counting 16-18 kernels around and 40-60 tall. You're welcome 😊

The yellow seems to be the result of a nitrogen deficiency
That was my initial thought / finding as well.. I doubled down on nitrogen in my feeding schedule but saw very little change thereafter.
@@JimmyBHarvests Is it possible you have nitrogen lockout? Also, when I grew corn over this past summer, the research I did said that most of the nitrogen the plant would uptake was within the first few weeks of growth, I'll see if I can find a source for that, but it's possible once you identified it, the plant was no longer taking it up and was essentially doomed to be yellow.

From what I can see, it looks like the leaves remained yellow because once it started to tassel out, the plant was using the nitrogen for that and to then produce silks, so the leaves did not get any extra care. I hope this all helps!
