  • A view of Broadway, 1971, taken from the northern traffic island at Broadway and 88th St, Manhattan NYC. Also included at the end is a short segment filmed from the northwest corner of West End Avenue and 89th St.
I made this film when I was a teenager, with an old Bell & Howell Filmo 16mm newsreel camera that my Dad bought for me from a thrift shop for $5. This is the only film I ever made with that camera. The film's speed is indeed slowed down, but I did that in the digital conversion for upload to UA-cam, in order to make it easier to see what was going on.

Little did these people know they were living in the best of times. Life after 9/11, especially now isn’t even living anymore. We’ve hit our peak as humans and now we’re devolved as a species. These people were truly blessed to be born in that time.

I don't know what you mean exactly that your nostalgia leads you to believe that we have "devolved as a species". I grew up on 90th and Riverside and the early 70's were not pretty. Lots of garbage in the streets, the Vietnam war still lingering (Lt. Calley & My Lai, how about that for "devolved"?), crime was high like now. Pollution was the worse from all the leaded gasoline and diesel trucks up & down Broadway. Uggh, it was not the best of times. It's only the best of times when looking back. Reminds me of Woody Allen's Midnight in Paris, one thinks prior eras were better than the one you are living in. We have evolved to think like that.

the New Yorker Theatre was between 88th and 89th on the west side of Broadway. Upstairs was the New Yorker bookshop, and next to the New Yorker bookshop, the bandleader Lynn Oliver had a rehearsal studio where bands playing NYC would rehearse. You'd be in the NY'er bookshop browsing and next door you could hear Basie. Classic! Thanks for the clip!

This is what I remember of my youth, my parenting years, the struggles to get ahead. I am comfortable today but life is not complete, life needs the abundance of mind of the years gone by. Yeah, the garbage stunk piled up in some boroughs, the subways were well adorned with graffiti, and times were hard, but nothing like we experience today. I don’t know how the young people of today do it, not easy I’m sure. For me, I have only the memories of what a great nation once was, how I got up every morning eager to try harder and see the result of my efforts at the end of the day. Keep rolling video. Clue me back into the past. Go ahead, make my day.

Remember the teacher's strike and holding classes in people's homes? Been away from NYC since '97 (Bay Area), but still think of it as home as folks and sisters still there. At least the old NYC, not the nearly unrecognizable one now. Sigh....

I lived at 215 West 88th Street and can still recall the smell of the incinerator garbage cans placed outside the building. I also recall carving names into the street asphalt with screw drivers on hot summer days while fire hydrants were open wide as kids took turns using soda bottles to spray the water. What about playing stickball in the garage driveway between buildings on 88th Street.

Love the muscle cars and the almost invisible graffiti peace sign the most-est! Had a corporate apt for a few weeks right around the corner in 1998. I think the New Yorker theater was still there. Saw a Harold Lloyd silent film show there, I think. Ended up renting a huge studio at the amazing Parc Vendome til 2000, near the old Coliseum Books. Found true love at last at AMEX, he even put a "good" ring on it, and moved to his place across town to his rent stabilized 2/2 pad at awesome, Corbusier inspired Manhattan House. Miraculously had perfect and only child at NY Hospital age 41. Thank u Whitney, Rockefeller and (AIG) Greenberg families for funding hospital! The Upper Westside is still my fav side of town. I am not trying to name drop, folks. Just trying to give the details to convey "only in NYC" and God Bless American Express! Don't leave home without it!

Beautiful life. The New Yorker theater was a jewel. And the Thalia off 95th and Broadway.

I used to walk over to the Hudson River on 85th street. I walked over to Lowe’s theater on Broadway, then go get some snacks a The ‘Mets’ food market on Amsterdam near 86th street. Then go get some hamburgers at the Mc Donald’s on the corner of 86th street and broadway. I’d go sit at ‘Saboos’ bar on the corner of 85th street and Amsterdam. I’d walk over to the supermarket on Broadway and 86th street. Attend church on Amsterdam and 86th street across from that very expensive super rich coop apartments. Take my clothes to the ‘cleaners’ on the corner of Amsterdam and 85th street. Play the numbers on Amsterdam and 84th street.

When New York City was truly New York City, a little rough around the edges, somewhat dirty gritty but underneath a lot of soul great place back in the day although I’m sure someone will disagree. I was there from 74 to 84 best time especially as a teenager.

Update: The poster has claimed that at :53 seconds, John Lennon and Yoko Ono cross the street, capturing them on film. Whaddayas think? It does look like them.

The male has his face turned away from the camera and we never get a good look at the female's face either. More importantly, this footage dates from a time when they were in England.

John and Yoko moved to New York for good on August 31 of that year. Everyone is wearing coats and the trees are bare, so it has to be around October or November. Still might be them but probably not.

@@carlcruz9388 They researched the movie titles seen here in a Beatles-related group on fb and the finding is that this is spring 71 rather than fall.

John had a bounce to his walk that I'm not seeing here (this person looks older and walks kind of carefully )
and not positive that's Yoko's hair which I think was longer at that time.

Yoko's shorter than this woman in the video. And i don't think that's John either, he had a different walk that i'm not seeing here.

These are the last great years in NYC before the prices started to skyrocket in the late 70's. Everything was within reach price wise. You won't see a Palmer drugs anymore which looked like a regular affordable drug store. It's all chains now or upscale. Rents were affordable too.

I visited my dad in NYC in July 1971, I was 10. Flew in on a 747, the stewardess (that's what they were called then) let me hand out alcoholic drinks to the passengers in the lounge. My dad drove a 60's Mustang and his girlfriend some big boat of a car. The neighborhood fireworks were insane. Everyone dumped all their fireworks in the middle of the intersection and lit it. We played in the fire hydrant water. I apparently got fat during my stay from all the great food because my mom yelled at my dad for me coming home plump.
