      Except pirates of the Caribbean holy cow was “He’s a pirate” catchy. (Also I know Klaus Badelt did the majority of the composing but he was hired and assisted by Hans Zimmer, who also worked on many of the other songs in the series. Gotta love those films.

      @@WilloWik Well, there's a big difference between the early Hans Zimmer - think about The Power of One, The Lion King, The Prince Of Egypt etc. and the Hans Zimmer after ~2010. Williams' style didn't change that much (His work has been and is very versatile. I couldn't tell if it's an early or a late Williams when I hear one of his works for the first time. In case of Zimmer that's much easier.). 🤔

Side note- a lot of people only give Zimmer credit for Kung Fu Panda, but never mention John Powell, who also worked on the music, and because of this I’m almost certain that John Powell was who made all the themes that people recognize it for. Kinda sucks that they forget John Powell, who Is say is much more of a “new John Williams” than Hans Zimmer

    If the orchestration has as many layers as an onion in its instruments choice and countermelodies, and makes you feel incredible emotion for each end every one of said layers, it's John Williams.
    If the orchestration is as thick as a lasagna, and causes your brain to explode the moment you take in one single note, it's Hans Zimmer.
    Lasagnas and onions are both fundamental in the world of cuisine, just like HZ and JW are to the world of film music.

      I think I might actually reverse the analogy, in this case, because I feel that, in general, Zimmer is more like an onion, in that his scores tend to be chopped up and mixed into the movie in a way that makes the movie feel greater without overwhelming it. I'd also be unlikely to partake of an onion on its own very frequently, though it can be prepared in so many ways that I might not even notice I'm having it some times. Williams is more like the lasagna noodles and sauce. It's vital to the meat (the movie), since without it it would just be a pile of seasoned ground beef. But I also wouldn't mind having meatless lasagna on occasion, just like I can listen to John William's scores whenever (Star Wars is Christmas music. @me).
      I think it comes from different schools of thought in movie score composition. Williams composes pieces of music that movies could be set to, Zimmer composes scores for movies. Neither is wrong, just very different.

    Hans Zimmer writes scores that are constructed in a really sophisticated way and amazing at serving the mood of the movie , but are not memorable in- and of themselves (most of the time). It's a totally different approach from Williams' bombastic melodies. And Zimmer really popularized this way of scoring in Hollywood movies with his Nolan collaborations, especially the Dark Knight trilogy.

    I love both Zimmer and Williams. Though Williams would have to take the cake for me. Zimmer perfectly sets the mood for the movies he composes for, and the pieces aren’t really meant to stand as a piece on their own. And that’s ok.
    Williams, on the other hand, creates pieces that work with the movies, but also stand on their own as beautiful and expressive pieces. And I think that’s why they’re so memorable.
    I could listen to a TON of Williams’ scores quite frequently, and they sound like complete pieces on their own. I don’t need to watch the movie to fully enjoy the pieces.
    Not trying to hate on Zimmer. I love how his compositions work in the movies. I just personally prefer Williams

    Williams vs Zimmer is leitmotif vs motif.
    Zimmer has overarching themes for films, but they aren’t always obvious and aren’t necessarily connected to a place or character. He tends to compose with an ear toward events.
    Williams composes character and location themes. Watch Star Wars and focus on the changes as characters appear on screen…Luke, Leia, Vader, they all have their own themes and styles which work within the overall framework of the score.

    I always hate these comparisons because the stuff people give Zimmer you could just as easily give to Williams. "Zimmer sets the mood" "he creates textures" "Hans constructs scores in a sophisticated way," these are all things that are even *better* attributed to Williams. And then the stuff people say about Williams, you could never in a million years say about Zimmer.
    Zimmer is the current reigning champion of film scoring, but we don't have to pretend there's a *good* reason for that just to not upset anyone. Zimmer used to write good music and hasn't written good music in over 20 years. He creates mush more akin to sound design and does at the most 60% of most of the scores he works on.

    Man, that question struck a chord. "Could you tell the difference?" Williams is a highly musically educated composer with a serious background. He studied with the best and was working with and playing in orchestras since his teens. Williams understanding and abilities with music are staggering when compared to Zimmer. Both equally have a command of the film music artform. Without a doubt. Both of their film works are iconic. BUT - if the question was who's music is stronger and who's a better musician, it's undoubtedly Williams. Zimmer would never be able to write with the complexity and command that Williams does. He just doesn't know how to do it. And Williams would probably find writing like Zimmer extremely boring. It's frustrating explaining this to people who don't know anything about music, but believe me, when you start learning how it's done...the work of Williams and so many composers cut from the same cloth is astounding.

  • @JordanWeberMusic

    For me, I have a love hate relationship with Zimmer’s music. He can be mindblowingly brilliant with one second of music and then the next second is painfully obtuse enough that it pulls me out of the film. My main example of this is The Amazing Spider-Man 2. I know it wasn’t all his ideas since it’s credited as the Magnificent Six, but Electro’s “voices in the head moment is chilling and hauntingly terrific, but the clarinet “goofy” theme when Max is talking to himself in the mirror really pulled me out of the film. I’m also indecisive on whether I like “I’m Goblin”. I love the track, but I don’t know if it quite fits the film. His ideas, though, are always exciting. I’m not sure f it was Zimmer or Junkie XL who came up with the electric cello for Wonder Woman to combine the stigma of the daintiliness and using string to portray that and turning it on it’s head is an amazing idea! But to sum up, Zimmer, to me, is great at writing music, but doesn’t always make what I think fits the movie.
    In juxtaposition, Williams’ works are almost always orchestral. I am very sure he has said that the melodic writing he does is not “his” style, but rather the atonal and jazz arrangements like he did on The Adventures of Tin Tin. But that lends more credit in my mind to Williams is that he can do so much with the orchestra and make it feel new and invigorating.
    I’d love to know what anyone else thinks on this!

      "bUt ItS sO ePiC". Hans Zimmer is all sound and direct impact and he is basically asked to write the same piece for every movie. He has managed to do something different like involving an Organ in Interstellar but otherwise there is "a lack of music" in his soundtracks (I know, everything is music). If you think its impressive to hear the difference between William's and Zimmer then please 'listen more'. Its night and day.

    • @JordanWeberMusic
      @JordanWeberMusic 2 роки тому +3

      @@slubert I don't disagree, the composition styles of Williams and Zimmer are quite different. Zimmer is definitely more of a soundscape artist and finding the different ways to manipulate sonics and he's proven good with that. I don't find it his fault that directors ask for that same kind of composing that leads to all of it sounding the same way, if that's what they want and he delivers, he has done his job. I know he is capable of writing things other than soundscapes, but if he isn't asked to do so, then it's not going to happen and that's ok.
      I am perplexed by your sentence of being impressed with the differences. Why would I not be impressed with different styles of music? There isn't one way to create music and that IS impressive. You can have leitmotifs and thematic devices intertwined into your music that lend to the music being its own character, or you can choose to let the music simply follow the emotion, tone, etc to double down on the director's vision and bring it to life and it will still do the job. In the end, it's Williams and Zimmer's job to support the movie with music, and I can debate whether I think it did or didn't in instances, but there is more than one way to create a score and I will always be impressed by the different ways that film composers or any other composers do that.

    How to tell the difference:
    Is is it extremely good? -> John Williams wrote it.
    Though I have to say Hans has written his fair share of good melodies, he is just not known for them. And John is Probably the best melodist of our generation.

    • @PPedroFernandes
      @PPedroFernandes 2 роки тому +8

      Did you watch the video? Williams music is melody heavy. Zimmer doesn't have such recognizable melodies, but that's on purpose. He tries to complement the scenes without "robbing" attention to the music, it's much more atmospheric, and from that point of view, he absolutely destroys Williams. Meanwhile, as a "traditional" song, Williams destroys Zimmer.
      They're different styles of movie scores, and they both have their strengths and weaknesses, and they can't even be directly compared

    • @simonfrasch3066

      @@PPedroFernandes I watched this clip, haven't watched the full video though. In generell what you said is correct, but like I said Hans has written several great melodies and melody heavy scores before. Some examples are The Lion King, Wonder Woman 1984, Pirates of the Carribean... you get my point. Just because most of Zimmers scores are less melodic, does not mean he cannot write a melody.

    • @xaostek
      @xaostek 2 роки тому +4

      Yeah, but why are you talking as if melody is the only thing that matters in orchestration? The entire point that they are trying to make is that Zimmer's scores do not rely on melody alone to enhance the atmosphere of a scene. Framing it strictly around melody is entirely missing the point of Zimmer's scores, he doesn't need to write memorable melodies to make great soundtracks.

    • @simonfrasch3066

      @PPedroFernandes 2 роки тому +1

      @@simonfrasch3066that's.... My entire point. He mostly CHOOSES not to write melody heavy music. Which in turn, makes the music less recognizable, it's a fact. Our brains hold on to melodies much easier. In turn, a more layered pad heavy score is often more appropriate to complement a scene, because a melody heavy score on certain situations pulls your attention from the movie.
      Point is, there's no way in hell you can say "if it's really good, it's Williams". That's almost factually incorrect. Because for one, like you said, Zimmer can write beautiful melodies, and second, he chooses not too. Not to mention stuff like interstellar is some of the most legendary scores there are

    John Williams scores a musical narrative. Zimmer and his ghost writers tend to create a repetitive series of layered accompaniments, occasionally with a melody somewhere in between.
    So basically what Charles said here, minus the diplomacy and plus a bit of passive-aggressive criticism of Zimmer😉

      I completely agree, also I feel Zimmer has lost a lot of his talent from his earlier works. Thelma and Louise and The Lion King are great scores on par with Williams, but Zimmer during his Nolan collab is horrible. I tried listening to the Interstellar soundtrack after my second viewing, specifically to try being open minded, and you just can't listen to it on its own. It's so disconnected without the visuals. I genuinely don't understand how or why people would go to a concert with his music.

    I love these guys both, they are both great composers. But I like Williams a little more as a part of me thinks Zimmer’s a little used too much in the industry, but that’s just probably me. I do wish Williams would’ve gotten to score more films in the early 2000’s that weren’t Spielberg directed or Star Wars. He had a few like The Patriot, Memoirs of a Geisha, or the first three Harry Potters, but otherwise, he has done Spielberg films and Star Wars films which is a shame cause he’s a great composer/conductor. Zimmer is everywhere and I like him, he’s a very nice guy, but I seriously mean it when I say he is everywhere. He’s done so much scores (specially for Dreamworks Animation), it’s crazy, but everyone needs a living. To be honestly, love both of these men. I hope they continue composing.

    Hans zimmer scored films can be rescored well by other good composers. Williams scores are inseparable from their films, even their characters and genres.
    The death star battle is slow and unrealistic, with less than 2 dozen small fighters moving like biplanes and trying ti kill a moon sized station. The rebel fleet shouldve been insufficient to beat a star destroyer. But the music! made it an amazing, tension filled battle, moving at breakneck speed.
    The jaws theme is more iconic than the shark and the film itself. Supermans theme was so perfect in '77 that the 90s cartoon basically aped it and it might as well be supes official, timeless theme, just like elfmans batman theme, but NOT zimmers batman music. I have seen the nolan bat films a million tines and have no memory of the music even though it was very effective while watching.
    Indys theme is familiar to my friends who havent seen indy films as it is amazing as generic action adventure but also as his specific character tune. Same as harry potter. The closest zimmer has gotten to that is pirates, but that theme doesnt capture the madness of sparrow, only the adventure of the high seas.
    Williams is so head and shoulders above everyone im surprised it is even debated. But thats just my opinion.
