- Two experimental ways to produce copper (II) sulfate, CuSO4.
Using the first we will try to oxidize metallic copper with the help of hot sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Copper does not react with sulfuric acid at room temperature, but it can be oxidized at high temperatures. Once oxidized it reacts with sulfuric acid in an acid-base reaction (copper oxide acts as a base).
The second experiment consists of reacting copper oxide with sulfuric acid directly.
