CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Adam (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) is very nervous about his surgery so he calls Katherine (Anna Kendrick) to feel better.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
Written by Will Reiser who based the film on his own experiences fighting cancer, Jonathan Levine's poignant comedy 50/50 stars Joseph Gordonn-Levitt as Adam, a 27-year old public radio employee who discovers he has cancer. As his best friend Kyle (Seth Rogen) tries to help out, his girlfriend Rachael (Bryce Dallas Howard) proves to be a less than ideal life partner for this particular crisis. All the while, Adam's overprotective mother Diane (Anjelica Huston) tries to overcome her son's continued attempts to keep her out of his life. As Adam begins to discover how hard it is to deal with his situation, and to maintain various relationships in his life, he begins seeing a young counselor (Anna Kendrick) who might prove to be just as helpful personally as she is professionally. Matt Frewer and Philip Baker Hall co-star as Adam's fellow chemotherapy patients.

This happened to my husband when he was fighting cancer. His girlfriend left when she could not handle it. I met him a year after and we fell in love ! He was the best guy ever and lost him after 31 years together. Miss him everyday but glad we had those years ! Love you Owen !

One of the only movies that had me laughing my ass off only to find myself on the verge of tears merely 5 minutes later. What an underrated movie.
+SuperIUFan53 I recommend Me Earl and the Dying Girl. The characters are younger and the protagonist isn't the sick person but it still manages to convey the pain that cancer brings while somehow being hysterical when it chooses. I like movies like that and 50/50 that don't try and romanticize the subject matter but still show you can still find humor in any situation

Even in the midst of a nervous breakdown in the face of death, Levitt still delivers the smoothest line in the whole film: "I bet you'd be a good one." Will Reisner crafted one of the tightest scripts I've ever seen brought to life on screen.
Anonymous Guy you’re describing exactly why it’s a bad script. How is someone so smooth during a nervous breakdown as they contemplate death? It comes off as really cheesy/corny.
I don't think it was a "line" it was sincere. It came from his heart because at this point he has nothing to lose.

The part that stands out is the difference between his ex and Anna's character. His ex talked about how hard it was for her to be in the relationship, focusing on herself. Here Anna's character talks about how hard her job is, not because of herself but because of how she can impact someone else's life. It's hard for her because she has his well being and best interests in mind, while his ex only had her own in mind

I think it would be hard to date a psychologist because every time you had an argument they'd be constantly analyzing you.
I got a friend that did but he could tell everytime shed use that on him in arguments. He would just tell her to "Stop it with that and just talk to me like a person"

sunnchilde that's why I can't date a psychologist. I can't stand a person studying me and I get nervous around those kinds of people too.
It's highly discouraged for psychologists to date current or former patients. You could lose your license if you do so. It's an incredibly imbalanced relationship .I believe at least in California, you have to wait at least two years before starting a relationship between therapist/patient.
I love this movie and its cast so much. Anna Kendrick is so pretty here.

From someone who’s watched a parent go through cancer, this movie is very realistic. Much more so than the fault in our stars, which romanticizes the whole situation. Cancer sucks.

I really like this movie, but as a therapist, the fact that she dates her client pisses me off so much. I wish she was literally anyone else, but his therapist.

@@thefirstbourne149 I don’t think she was a bad therapist in the movie at all, aside from dating him at the end. There are times where therapists date their clients. It’s highly unethical, and you will lose your license to practice if and when you are caught. The reason for this is the imbalance of power in the relationship. As a therapist, you are privy to a lot of sensitive information and are in a specific role. Also, in the history of the mental health field, psychologists and psychiatrists did date their patients with really disastrous results.

they’ve got it pretty much perfect with everything in the cancer treatments too, right down to the yellowing of the teeth and I think that’s brilliant tbh, see The Fault In Our Stars for not really SUPER caring about stuff like that and how it affects them. Like wow.

To FIOS credit they were only trying to make a likable romance movie that shows the serious stuff at certain points. This was a bit more of a personal project for this director. Besides, the acting in that film was still just as good if not better, and it’s arguably Ansel Elgort’s best performance in any movie lol.

this scene killed me, this movie is so honest. I really loved it, and they are super cute :)
for context, she was a doctoral student and taking on patients as part of her dissertation. she wasn’t an actual licensed therapist. so even more of a grey area with doctor-patient relationship than a clear she’s his therapist so that’s a hard no.
Student or not, theres still a boundary that exists to protect both professional and patient. As nice as it is for a movie, in real life scenarios its not an idea that should remotely be considered.

I love Anna Kendrick, but I can't help wishing her part was played by a less conventionally attractive actress. She's freaking adorable, I get it, but I didn't believe for a second that she was a psychologist. I would have preferred someone a little spiky and quirky, someone with a bit of (again, no offense to Ms. Kendrick) substance to her. There was no tension. This was one of those movies, like Silver Linings Playbook, where there was no doubt, even for a fraction of a second, that the two leads would get together. That said, I love this movie and this scene.
I don’t think the point was that you were supposed to think Bradley Cooper wouldn’t end up with Jennifer Lawrence. It was mainly about Cooper learning that he could move on.
If anything, you should want to believe they would end up together. The biggest problem would be if they all of a sudden tried to make it so that they’re really trying so hard to convince you. They tease it for a second, but even the dad is there to just tell him, “Stop ignoring that a$$, ‘cause it’s hotter and more faithful than your ex-wife”.

I think he said that to put into perspective how little he has done in his life. When people think of what they've done, they normally think to see the world and since Canada is only over the boarder, that's giving a scale as to how little he has seen in his life up until that point.
