  • From producers unknown, this 16mm black and white film appears to have been shot and edited around 1955. With many scenes of downtown and a cameo from "Novato's oldest resident," Bruno Schultz, it's sure to please any Novato history enthusiast.

    This is so cool! My Dad (Stan Orman) was the original owner of Stan's Appliance Center. He was located at 3 different addresses on Grant. The last location was in the old B of A corner location. This was back in the early 60's-late 70's.

    Wow, quite a leap back. Thanks for posting. My family built a home in Novato in 1965 and raised 3 boys there. Awesome town. I used to go into Pini hardware with my dad. And there is is in 1955. Much much later my dad became mayor of Novato....John Mani.

      June 1965 was when we moved to Novato. Brand new 3 BD 2 BA $26:500. Still live there. Still a great town. Miss the milkman and Colonial Bread trucks. Too much traffic now, , though.

    I was born in 1955.My parents moved us from San Rafael to Novato in 1960, to a small subdivision called Shields Lane off Wilson Ave. This was the first time I have seen a film as old as this about Novato! Thanks You! It is great. I am passing it to all my Novato friends!!!

    This is awesome and brings back many memories since we moved to Novato in 1956. We just had the Class of 62's 50th reunion last October and I wish we'd had this for the event. Thanks for sharing...Robin (Halpenny) Conner, Tucson, AZ

    Great video! We moved to Novato in 1968 in San Marin when it was fairly new. I graduated from San Marin high in 1974. Even today Novato looks different then in 1968.

    Moved to Novato during Rancho Round-Up Weekend in 1965. Found it very cool thar KGO-TV kid-show star Jay Alexander “Marshall J” lived a hoot and a holler from us.
    Used to take the Greyhound bus ride back to SF where I grew up. The bus depot was right next to the Viking Bar. Always salute the Viking when I drive by these days.

    This is such a great documentary of Novato! I grew up in San Rafael and remember when Novato was mostly horse country in the 60s. I raised my kids in Novato and live here now.

    I'm thrilled to see so many people enjoying this piece. Yay! I'm hoping to digitize and share more videos from Novato's history. There are already a couple more available -- "Novato Then and Now" from a 1997 Soroptimist broadcast and "Sister City" from 1989, when Novato began its sister-city relationship with Shepparton, Australia. Fun!

    Oh, that's great! I haven't seen Jack in many, many years. My dad, Ken Morrison, who worked at the Novato Advance, introduced me to Jack a long time ago. Please give him my regards! And thanks for the watching, and for the comment.

    This file was created from a VHS tape. I don't know where the original print is. And yeah, there are a lot of jumps -- it was obviously an old and beat-up print. It would be great to find it!

    My brother, Jack and I saw this together today - he is the quarterback in the football clip, this is amazing - where did you find it? We were born (1941 and 1943) and raised in Novato and Jack was a member of the first graduating class of Novato High School. We had such a great time watching this - thank you!! Bruno even looked old then!

      +hiso ksila: 101 was called "Redwood Highway". Of course Redwood Highway still exists. Yes, believe it or not, Redwood Highway was the only highway. 101 as you know it now didn't exist until about 1970.

    • @SusannahPerri
      @SusannahPerri 4 роки тому +1

      @@aaardvarkkk I know you wrote this several years ago, but I wanted to add my memory. Hwy 101 used to end at the South Novato Blvd exit. There was a sign that said, "end of freeway" and it would lead you past cow pastures to Redwood Blvd, which was bustling and crowded with places to stop and eat. I remember a small burger joint that had the best milkshakes, which was around where the car dealerships are today. It was one of the last businesses to hold out on Redwood Blvd, when it basically came to a complete shutdown after they opened Hwy 101 and you no longer had to slow and go up Redwood. Denny's was the last of the old restaurants to finally close down many years later. It was where Peet's Coffee is today. It was sad to see Redwood Blvd just close down. In the early 70s there was a huge blocked off ramp that went nowhere--well that became Rowland Blvd where it crosses over to Vintage Oaks.

    If you look and listen very carefully, in the backround, you can notice....everyone is completely shitfaced. Some things never change.
