His mind simply works on a different level than the minds of mere mortals. Plus he's a bit of a nut, and he doesn't take himself too seriously. Definitely my all time favorite writer.
This is a beautiful dialogue. Mark Helprin is the finest writer of our time, and an intellectual who is sometimes misunderstood; but, in reality, he is an artist of classical proportions...his novels explain the world in beautiful terms.
I've watched this vid...and listened intently to Mr. Helprin as many times, now, as I've re-read Winter's Tale. Whichever direction he goes, he IS the author of our times. Brilliant!
With regard to Helprin's opening remark about Chicago: according to Wikipedia, Chicago has less than 3 million residents. The Chicago metropolitan area (Chicagoland) has nearly 10 million people. So that figure of 8 million Mexican residents living in Chicago that the Mexican ambassador cited is completely absurd.

I could watch Helprin talk for hours and hours.

wonderful program, after watching one will understand why Mr. Helprin's books are so long and so good.
Given these stories, how could Mr. Helprin NOT become a writer?
Ayuh.

Wonderful interview - But it was Samuel Johnson who said "No man but a blockhead ever wrote except for money." - Not Dostoevsky.
Well, he was quoting from memory, whereas you had to Google the quote. Cut a genius some slack, eh?
