  • Originally bored out towards the end of World War 1, these tunnels were then used to shelter 1350 people during WW2. With a mixture of brick lined and unlined chalk tunnels, this place spans a large underground area that creates the Winchelsea caves.

those hallways went forever...I'm mind-boggled on the effort it took to build those tunnels in such a short amount of time during the war....Amazing.

+Trojan Horse Solutions, LLC. The sections of this tunnel that are chalk and perfectly round were dug by a rotary boring machine called a Whittaker 😉👍

The smooth section of tunnel was bored by a tunneling machine similar to that which cut the Victorian Channel Tunnel attempt under Shakespeare cliff - a proof of concept trial, if you like.

It was called the Whittaker Boring machine if im not mistaken.

I did a tour of the miles of lime stone tunnels under Odessa in Ukraine. During WW2 they were used to fight the Nazis. Rifle ranges ,hospitals, barracks, kitchens .You guys should pop over there to check them out .Ukraine is really cheap to visit. there are hundreds of miles of tunnels.
