      I understand why. No one likes to sound crappy. 😂 Those first two videos sounded even worse than I imagined. On one of them, if you listen through headphones you can actually hear a garbage truck outside my window.

    If you have a Spark amp, the app had a built-in feature to record a video of yourself playing.

      Glad that you enjoyed it. They say necessity is the mother of all invention. It's true. I made the video because some of my students struggle to make decent sounding videos. So I killed two birds with one stone, so to speak. Before recording the video I watched a few different similar videos and everybody had high tech solutions. One suggested a microphone, I looked it up on Amazon and it was $250. Others required an audio interface which can be expensive. I thought no way. Yes, to make the highest quality phone video this isn't the answer. The answer is to make a separate recording using a DAW then match up and replace the original audio track. But that's way beyond what most people need.

    Hi Doug very informative. I take lessons online and have to show my progress via video. I have always thought that my tone was horrible on the recording. Thank you for showing me why and how to correct it. Keep up the great work. Seems like it's been awhile since you did a video. Glad you're back.

      Glad you enjoyed it. Here's a funny fact about the SM57. I purchased my first one new from a local music store in the early 70s. It cost $129. Today, you buy the same mic new for $100. What inflation? It's amazing how some things cost so much more today than they did then and the price of these microphones has continued to drop.

    Brilliant video. Thank you. I have only tried recording myself once, and the set up was just one more problem to contend with. My wife keeps asking me to record my playing for her, and this will help make me less self conscious of the recording process itself. I worry too much about my playing, adding to that tension just make me create more mistakes.

    • @scottjones2972
      @scottjones2972 23 години тому

      Probably a redundant statement to make to a guy who has been teaching for decades >.

    • @DougMarks
      @DougMarks  22 години тому +2

      lol. That never ends. But I agree with your wife, record your playing. There's a good chance you won't like some of the things you hear but that gives you the opportunity to improve. When I'm feeling nervous about a recording, even if what I'm playing is only a couple of measures, I'll repeat it for at least fifteen minutes or at least until I've played it to my satisfaction. Then I edit out all the bad takes and I end up with something I can live with. After awhile the adrenalin subsides.

    At 6:06, where you talk about channel 1 of the interface for the amp simulator, it sounds like Zoom allows use of an amp sim? I have never used Zoom - I usually use the iPhone video camera which as far as I know cannot be used with amp sims. I wouldn't mind seeing a separate tutorial on using the Zoom app as you discuss here. 👍🏻

    I was wondering about this, but for a different reason. I want to record song ideas. I have been playing guitar since 1977 and consider myseof at least intermediate. I play by ear though and do need to learn more theory such as modes which really confuses me. Plus, I cant even read tab very well. 😂. I can hear a song though and figure it out pretty fast. ❤😂. I guess that is a plus. ❤😂.
    Be well and god speed sir. ❤

    Hi Doug, I really enjoy your videos, this one included. Do you have any tips for recording acoustic guitar also? Very useful video. The audio on the videos I have recorded is poor, any tips are very welcome. Ps Happy New Year from the UK 👍😁

    • @DougMarks
      @DougMarks  2 дні тому +2

      Happy New Year David. I don't have a video on recording acoustic guitar but it should be recorded with a condenser mic very close to the sound hole of the instrument. If you have a great sounding room a 2nd mic would be great to capture the room sound. Otherwise, use reverb to simulate a great sounding room.

Some android phones just have Suckey audio software & thats how it is. I can do the same recording my tascam, or my kodak sounds real & true & good . Phone just sucks. Android atleast.

    • @DougMarks
      @DougMarks  22 години тому +2

      I have an iPhone and it makes a great recording. I have cameras that I use that aren't professional and make hideous sounding recordings... the audio is extremely compressed which brings up all the background noise. So, when I record the video I also record my guitar directly into the DAW. I drag the video on to the timeline of my video editing program, drag in the audio from my DAW and visually sync the tracks then mute the crappy sounding audio. That's how to make a great sounding video.

    • @DougMarks
      @DougMarks  22 години тому

      Try recording it as I explained here. Sometimes you can find settings for the microphone that can help out. If all else fails record the video and audio separately as I explained in a previous post. It's really important to find some way to make good recordings.

    • @scottdunn2178
      @scottdunn2178 21 годину тому

      @DougMarks To me these small condenser mics on these phones just don't capture that oomph in the room unless you use some really good bassy headphones - I'll definitely try these tips and see if that doesn't improve things.
