XDefiant Review - Underwhelming

- XDefiant is finally available on Xbox Series X/S, PS5 and PC, and it's...fine in some ways and underwhelming in others. The crossover shooter, announced in 2021, features various factions from the Tom Clancy video game universe (and other titles) battling it for supremacy. Or something - it's never really explained.
There are five factions, four available at the outset; 14 maps, several well-designed and others not so much; five modes, ranging from deathmatch-focused to objective-based; and a staggering lack of features. The Practice Area is mysteriously locked. You have no limited-time modes, kill cams or even a proper Career page to check your stats.
While the gunplay, customization and overall map design of XDefiant are worth checking out, this free-to-play shooter still needs a lot of work, especially with hit registration issues, poor netcode and much more weighing it down.
I’ve been having fun with this game, I really don’t see why so many reviewers are giving it hate. If you like call of duty but you’re tired of all the bs, this is an awesome game!
It’s just one person per review. So even if 10 reviews gave it a bad “ score “ it’s only 10 ppl who didn’t like it . I never trust reviews. If it looks interesting I watch some gameplay and look to much smaller UA-camr to see how it plays the pros and cons based on the gameplay.

If my gun didn't feel like a pea shooter while the enemy seems to melt me in 2 shots I'd probably be enjoying it a lot more.

I for one, didn't give this game a chance during Alpha or Beta, but now that I have played it, this game actually feels really good, and it kind of refreshing versus Battlefield, or COD...

Man oh man going from finals to xdefiant is so boring. Movment feels so linear and like poop. The map is so boring without and vertical and destructions. How can it have 2 million players. I played 30 min and I have no desire to play more honestly. Also graphics are garbage up close and walls lack good textures. Man They need to market the crap out of the finals. It's so much better of a product and deserves so much more praise despite it's "short comings" The base game is a billion times better than anything else out.

Honestly it's been a long time since I had this much fun. MW2019 is what hooked me up to play Arcade shooters again. I stopped playing COD since MW2 2022, because of the horrible monetization. Each COD title is just the same game with just different maps and maybe weapons. And I don't see a point anymore to pay 70 quid for the same game.
XDefiant delievered exactly what I wanted from a game. No SBMM is what I've been waiting since the legacy MW series and I do feel like I get more kills and more adrenaline while playing. I don't know I kinda got addicted to XD now. I've been having a lot of fun so far. Hopefully Ubi doesn't fuck this up.
i'm not hating but what's so fun about it? i tried it and it's just another copy paste game with domination modes, etc... these games need to be more creative and come out with some big map modes.

Some gamers will, others won't. It's a bit overhyped in my opinion and their one-word title description of the game is pretty accurate: underwhelming. It doesn't mean it's bad, I'll be the first to admit the game has its moments and I'd put my average rating of it at 7-7.5/10 (which isn't bad, I'm convinced the GPA system has everyone thinking a 7-7.5 out of 10 equals F tier).
I just found myself getting bored really quickly with the game. The sandbox is heavily limited, the movement goes from feeling clunky to coked out super sprinted zombies from Black Ops Cold War, and there are inherent design choices that I, as a CoD player (my main arcade FPS of choice) who preferred the Modern Warfare series (back in the day and with MW2019 vs Cold War and Vanguard), there is not much for me to like in the game inherently. I find the longer TTK doesn't promote higher skill, it just promotes cheesy movement mechanics akin to cheese combos in Mortal Kombat as well as making snipers exceptionally strong with very little skill in using them.
The abilities are also highly annoying and I personally think that they detract from the game more than they help it, but again, I mostly play more grounded FPS games so I'm most likely never going to really understand it (the only 'hero' shooter I ever liked was Siege and that was solely because of the slowed down gameplay and it being a thinking man's game). Bottom line, if you like the game, play it and write appreciative reviews. If you don't like it, write disappointed reviews. If you're somewhere in the middle like me... get ready to get shit on by everyone for constructive criticism/taking a nuanced outlook.

I played 12 hours of this game in 2 days. It’s free, haven’t had any hackers, don’t have micro transactions shoved in my face and overall has been enjoyable. Eff this review this game is off to a great start

I love this game. Main reason is the movement or lack of. COD has ruined its game by allowing people to slide cancel and bunny hop out of control. You don’t see many people walking or running in cod anymore. XDefiant has kept this game more to the roots of what cod was. Never change XDefiant 👍

I really wanna enjoy this game but I just cant ! Theres no logical reason for me to get the first 5-7 shots off and the person is still able to kill me ! I can shoot a whole magazine and land each shot but they can shoot me 5-7 times and boom im dead ! I can see why this dog shit game is free 😂 cod killer they say ? 😂😂 and im not a cod fanboy either

I think it’s pretty good plus it’s free, don’t understand the hate it’s getting at all. TTK is a bit slow in my opinion but that’s just a personal thing I’m sure I’ll get used to it. Reminds me of dirty bomb a little bit actually
It's because you're rewarded with faster kills from headshots. It's not like COD, where the damage is mostly the same no matter what area of the body you hit.

This game is awesome. Its not meant to be unique or different. This game was made for people that are sick and fukkin tired of systems that are put in place to protect bad players. These systems are a plague on the gaming indesutry when it comes to PvP games and this game stands agaisnt those systems. The game is rough around the edges yes but the game is FUN and i cant say the same thing about any other FPS PvP games on the market becuz theyre all plagued by sbmm, lobby balancing, disbanding lobbies, corner camping, bots, etc...
Keep in mind this isn’t a $70 150GB COD game either, but a f2p game

The game is underwhelming, it's true. Ubisoft is more known for quality instead of quantity in games. You could say Ubisoft did not aim to innovate to appeal to the player base. Everything you see in the game have been done by COD or Overwatch. What they did to appeal the player base was 1) make the game free and 2) ditch SBMM, which the online-aware, youtube-watching, "higher-skilled" part of the COD player base eagerly wants. Even though I agree SBMM should be dropped by COD in casual pubs for the most, that doesn't make this game inherently good. Objectively the gameplay, gun-game mechanics and movement and even graphics are way outdated, and like previously said it brings nothing new to the table. If Activision decides to drop SBMM and put the game on Game Pass, this game has nothing going for it.
The grind for this game is absurd, too many matches to level up one gun.
And I’m not grinding 4k xp per match to unlock another faction at 700k for only two more abilities.
The skins look cool but battle pass is also a grind. Not wasting anymore time with this. This could have been a decent shooter unless they decide to change the progression.
There is 2x xp if you’re actually good at the game you can get like 3.5 levels on a weapon each game. The game hasn’t even been out a week and you expect to have completed the battle pass already. Complete your daily challenges that give you 5k, 7.5k, and 10k xp and quit complaining
@@prehd3599 1. Didn’t complain about “completing” the battle pass, I said the battle pass is a grind which it is. I don’t “expect” it be completed quickly but I “expect” my time to be respected. Let’s not mince words.
2. If you value your time invested, arbitrary systems like double XP wouldn’t be necessary to validate the time you put in, especially since that’s a limited resource. Daily challenges are just that, something you’re given to do three times a day minimum and afterwards your progression is halted. The standard experience you get as an “average” should be a little higher while still rewarding “higher skilled” players.
Be open to criticism, don’t just accept what’s given in front of you. If you’re having a good experience, then more power to you but you have no reason to tell others why they’re not allowed to complain especially if they want changes that can improve the quality for not just themselves but others.
This game is super fun. Haven’t played COD in a few years because SBMM made me feel like
I was playing in a tournament every single game. Found myself getting so mad and not being able to relax. This game is a breath of fresh air and feels like how COD used to feel. I love coming home, cracking open a beer, and running a few games.
Tried the game yesterday, been having fun ever since. Why the hate?? The game even scales better than Battlefield 2042, runs much better tbh. Tho it can be understood the scale is much smaller compared to its competitors. Gameplay is decent imo, especially if you play in FC6 & The Division maps it will give you a feel ala overwatch but not quite the same which is good. If anything should get hated, its the ubisoft servers. Even the battle pass is not that expensive. Don't look at the front in-game store bundle but look at how much the digital coins actually cost to redeem it.
Guns take a hell of along time to rank up without double XP I’d be burnt out strictly on no ranked play.

There are no abilities. They don’t have abilities. They have tools, cleaners like you said they’re bullets are incendiary that’s a tool. That’s not a magical ability that a hero gets that’s just an incendiary bullet. The flame on the ground that’s Molotov cocktail the napalm being sprayed on everybody it is a drone flying overhead, spraying nail palm and then exploding to ignite it. Well, I guess it kind of ignites as it is. It’s phrase it either way it’s a tool. These are literally all tools we could build today outside of a fantasy world in a game. We could actually build those tools. Nothing heroesq about any of it.

Aslan‘s wall hack is available to them every time. I don’t know that I’ve ever actually activated Ashlan‘s ultimate or ultra or whatever but the very first ability the default ability is invisibility. The alternate choice is pinging and displaying locations of anything within your range to all your teammates by the way, it’s just technology in a video game and it’s again not technology. That’s impossible. We have those kinds of technologies now, not nearly so convenient to use but we can look right inside of building and see you sitting at your TV. US government can shoot a gun so powerful that they can kill you while you sit at your chair watching your TV. These are not magical abilities, nor far-fetched we have technologies similar to this. It would not surprise me if we don’t have drones for instance, that can fly a payload of maybe not napalm but some kind of explosives And then be the operator when the drone gets close to its target and we’ve been dropping napalm the whole region since Vietnam these are not magic. They’re just technology tools. Each faction brings tool and each faction fills a role whether it be tank DPS crowd control I’m sorry not crowd control but the Intel one I don’t know where that really fits in. It’s still a support class, but but she can also be a pretty damn good sniperto heal I mean right out of the trifecta healing tanking and DPS. Let’s call it tanking because two of them are support characters in the end. The fire is bullets are literally setting people on fire and there are challenges to get kills while people are affected by shit like that.
Have been playing since launch. The game is pretty fun, and in the balance of CoD meets Hero Shooter, it inclines more to the CoD side.
As of now, the game has some technical issues as in hit detection, server stability and slow progression towards leveling weapons.
If those things can be fixed/improved in the next couple weeks, game's got a future for sure.
Plus, I don't doubt more modes gonna be added, but the ones we have right now encourage a less CoDish style ( all of them are objective based, but one)

No, it isn’t. The ultras are not in any way game changers unless they just happen at the very end to allow somebody say to push the cargo further than the other team and then the time runs out or something, but they’re not really game changers you can wipe the entire team, five times the team might still win and by the way and KD don’t mean shit just like overwatch holding the position you’re supposed to hold pushing the thing you’re supposed to push those or what win matches you could literally win a match in this game and a game like overwatch without it actually firing your weapon

IMHO it just feels dated. It feels like I'm playing a Ps3 era COD. The hud is also very reminiscent of a mobile game. If you enjoy it though, more power to you. I'm gonna stick with The Finals.

@@b.g01d3nT0ngu3 I can answer this for you. Most pc shooter players don't want all the visual noise, verticality, special abilities, etc that something like The Finals has. I want good gunplay.

TTK is fine, because it's the TTK the game has and you have gun duels where the person who is better at tracking wins.
If you say that TTK could use some work because CoD has a shorter one, then why doesn't CoD have a shorter TTK too? It is way too long when you compare it to games like Escape From Tarkov, Valorant or CS 2. What ever answer you have is the same reason why XDefiant has a longer TTK.

Gosh!!! Video game these days. I am still good at playing my 360 and some good modded PC games like Skyrim and Witcher. Personal preferences, but Single-player games are my type of game.

This game just has bad game design man. I was playing the escort mode on some map and you spawn and have to run down a long corridor with one exit and it’s just a pinch point for 4 enemies to farm kills while they only need one escorting the robot because they basically had our whole team trapped for the 30 seconds that the robot was in that area. It’s small stuff like that and the fact that the movement speed is so fast most of the game modes are just people running in circles to run up behind you which is super obnoxious to run 5 feet from spawn and somehow have 3 enemies behind me. The graphics are sub par especially for a shooter made in 2024 by a triple A studio. Gunplay feels icky to me and the controller settings are bunk seeing as the highest sens settings for controller still feel super slow with the ability to make ads super fast for some reason but not look speed. Case in point I played a few games and deleted it because this game is hot ass.

What's your point? It's still a Triple-A studio. There are lots of free-to-play games far better than the state XDefiant finds itself in now
this game is cool but if you have a higher frame rate than an enemy you’ll constantly out gun them. honestly it’s not fair to have to play against pc players with a 200+ frame rate while being on an xbox capped out at 60fps. ruins the experience for the bad players. (i have a 2.42 kd so miss me with the “skill issue” bs.. just stating facts)

I'm actually really enjoying it. It's good just to have a few rounds and then come off. I'm not a call of duty fan especially the way it is now. Xdefiant is actually a lot closer to Overwatch more than anything without the toxicity.
People seem to forget that it's free. Granted I didn't enjoy it but I would be angry if I'd been charged for it 😂
Maybe this is just my apex legends movement monkey brain kicking in, but all the movement in this game feels terrible. It feels like I’m playing a mobile game. The actual gameplay is fine and the gunplay isn’t bad, but the movement just bothers me
I like the game i dislike how it forces you to cooperate with others the classes don’t work well on their own against more than one person yes you can hit headshots and yada yada but there’s literally no survivability like in cod I know I can engage with multiple enemies and I can come out of it even getting shot at so that’s my primary issue but it’s a good game i wish though the incinerating rounds where a optional ammunition than locked behind a class but it’s fun feels like a old cod game just needs some polishing
It’s not that insane. I only played this weekend for several hours and I think I have I don’t know 100 and something around 150 K experience. you could just buy it right you can unlock it in the store. Give them some money so that they can add some more guns for me.

@@aFLYER1980 Yeah that's cool, thing is, people will either say it's really good or really bad, i have my own personal opinion on it but it's always better to form your own, that way your not disappointed or are based on your own gameplay etc, have a nice weekend ✌️
THAT is a bought review, in now way in hell did u just say they nailed the weapons..... the shotguns are unplayably ass the snipers are way too easy too play and therefore op the only 2 ARs that are playable are the acr and ak and the only playable mp is the mp7 dont tell me anything about guns ive seen from your gameplay that youre like those middle aged men coming home from work and playing 30 minutes u know nothin g about shooters let alone fps
It's okay for what it is, but it is fun to be had. Ps 1st lol
Its really really mid, as most ubisoft stuff is nowadays. The netcode sucks, it feels even more repetitive than cod. Also the gunplay is just plastic.

Perfect review! Exactly how I would have done it too. I also think that the character movement in this game is a little janky coming from The Finals player. I wanted to like it but the amount of grinding necessary for weapon upgrades and the level of cosmetic customisation is just off-putting. It just didn't give me the mind trigger of love at first match like The Finals did.
