    Good. Someone who knows what they're doing. Patience not whips and pain.

    My horse has a habit of walking backwards sometimes if I'm taking a long time in mounting or he walks off when I get in the saddle.

    Good video, question? What do you do when horse keeps swinging his hind end away?

      You can carry a dressage whip and tap the far side of his hindquarters so he comes back to you, or you can lead him away and back to the block and just keep repeating that until he gets tired of it and stops moving his butt away.

    This helped a LOT!! My youngster has suddenly started being difficult to mount, either walking forward after other horses, or when we're alone, backing up or swinging away whenever I go to even move the block near him. It's frustrating, so my goal for this week's riding is to get him to stand still. Thank you x

    Thank you for this. I also find your videos so helpful and practical. This will be my goal for tomorrow.

    I thought you shouldn’t pat a horse can you explain

      @@eggchomp Horses don't pat each other; this is the reason that some people say you 'shouldn't' pat them but should stroke them instead, which is more like what horses do to each other and so is likely to be more readily understood by them. But a lot of horses have become used to patting as meaning 'well done' and that's fine. I ride a spooky horse who hates patting but loves a stroke.

    what's the purpose of the mounting block. don't you just step up and get on

    • @shmeeden
      @shmeeden 7 років тому +7

      You can, but it's a lot easier on your tack and on the horse's spine if you get up from the block instead. Reduces how much leverage is exerted on both. It also helps prevent having your saddle twist or shift during mounting.

      eastriverbeesd Chris It’s better for the horse’s spine. Mounting from the ground can pull the saddle and damage a horse’s spine. It’s also just easier to mount from a mounting block.

      Some people are just short and need a block

      Easier on the horse and at 65 and 5'2" I can't get on my 15.2 hh horse without something to stand on anymore.
