Quarq Tyrewiz Review: Real-Time Tyre Pressure Monitor

  • The Quarq TyreWiz and related phone app / Garmin or Wahoo computer software add-ons provide real-time tyre pressure monitoring. The mobile app provides personalized tire pressure recommendations and allows one to designate front and rear sensors for live feedback from a Garmin or Wahoo cycling computer.
    Is the TyreWiz the sort of device that should grace the bike of the average Gravel Cyclist? Or is it good for the roadie type market only? JOM of the Gravel Cyclist crew rode the TyreWiz on road and gravel bikes, and his findings are in this review.

    I have a pair of these for my road bike, and just ordered another set for a gravel bike. I find them very useful for alerting me of a leak (if you set the low and high limit for tire pressure, the Garmin data field will highlight the front or rear sensor when the pressure is outside of those limits), and also for adding air on the road after fixing a flat (no need to guess or carry a pressure gauge). Then can be more accurate than a floor pump too, so they are useful for inflating tires before a ride. The only problem I've had is Garmin has occassionally broken the Connect IQ API as a result of a OS software update, so the TyreWiz then refuse to pair with the 1030. In that case, you have to roll back to a previous version of the OS until Garmin gets a fix out.

    i find myself lusting over these for my fatbike, where 0.5 psi can make a huge difference for any given snow condition.

    The next step: a cartridge attached to your valve that automatically adjusts the pressure.

    Your initial tightening implied that one can face this unit either forward or rearward but, in fact, the instructions state that the unit should face in the opposite direction of travel.

      @@GravelCyclist Good for you! I do too, when it promises some sort of improvement. But, when you're creating a video for the purposes of instruction, which could involve issues of safety (preventing the frontal forced air from turning the unit in a way that may become dangerous, or at least potentially damage the electronics by having them hit by the fork or some other part of the bicycle, for instance) is not only irresponsible and uncaring... but not very smart as it can result is a situation that no one would be happy with, including yourself.
      It really isn't necessary for you to defend yourself no matter what you feel you have to say to do so. Better would be to either do it right the first time, edit it and do it right the next time, delete it as it had a glaring and potentially dangerous fault, or mention in the description the correction.

    Can the bike be transported on a bike rack that carries the bike by the top tube and not trigger to read if the rear wheel is moving.

      Gary, I don't see this happening. The TyreWiz sensors would begin trying to detect a connection, so battery drain would occur. This wasn't mentioned in the TyreWiz literature - the device does flash red (like early in the video), when it appears to be waiting for a connection. If I remember, I'll follow up with my contact at Quarq. Thanks!

      @@GravelCyclist Sometimes the excuse of not having the time or being too busy or forgetting to do something is valid but, for the majority of instances, it's a matter of priorities. I'm fairly sure that, if someone offered you $1,000.00 (or more) to follow up you'd not only remember to do it but you actually would do it. :)
      So, no I didn't forget about your plate and your job as I already have a well worn answer for that explanation having heard this reason from many before. And, truly, you don't owe anyone an explanation but at least be honest with yourself.
      My own, unsolicited, advice is to edit your reply by deleting what you stated you'd do, if you remembered to do it.

    does it work w tubeless?? wouldnt the sealant mess it up??

    • @GravelCyclist

      It works with tubeless and sealant, those i9 wheels in the video are paired with tubeless Panaracer Gravelking SK's and Orange Seal Endurance formula. Pretty sure I mentioned that in the video.

    I think these will be useful for your average gravel cyclist. I say that because most people that are moving/trying gravel are from the road and (still) like to run tire pressure way too high. They don't understand that in most instances, a smooth ride is a fast ride. These would give them a live/real-world feel of just what running a lower tire pressure can do to not only smooth out their ride but to give them a bit more confidence on gravel. It will also show anyone, that you can run low tire pressure and still roll fast.
    And, from what I have been told by a few magazine guys is that you are correct about the data acquisition for tire pressures on your rides, they just haven't released that feature yet

    • @GravelCyclist
      @GravelCyclist  6 років тому +1

      Thanks for chiming in Jason, you are spot on most folks running their tyre pressure too high.... and the smoother ride of appropriate tyre pressure. I think most riders may not relish the price of this little gadget, $US 200 a pair. However, you did raise some points I didn't think about, appreciate the feedback.
      For me, it has been interesting to see the variance in tyre pressure during the course of an average gravel ride.

    • @cyclingj13
      @cyclingj13 6 років тому +2

      I completely agree that the price is the biggest hangup (I forgot to say that in my initial comment) on these and why I will assume that most of the cycling population will just look at them as a gimmick for data nerds. My hope is that Quarq can get the price down to a more palatable range in the future because I would love to have that kind of data over watts any day

    Really Love the tech. But not a fan of the way it makes our sweet sometimes very expensive, in my case, Enve 3.4 AR wheels look. I check my tires before every ride. That’s an absolute must. If I’m running low and it’s not a real issue to prevent me from stopping it’s likely a slight puncture and the sealant is going to hopefully get me home. Otherwise it’s a stop and repair. The Tyre Wiz unfortunately see,ingot can’t help me. However I applaud SRAM for always pushing and improving with many great products for us Cyclists. I absolutely love my SRAM Red AXS Hydro and Quarq power meter on my Moots Routt RSL. Just don’t know if these will be flying the shelf. For SRAM I hope they do. Alway great content JOM.
