The caboose or now called a shoving platform would have a whistle they could tie into the airline called a Hancock Whistle so the Conductor could still do a grade crossing signal since the engineer wouldn't be able to see when the grade crossing is coming. Very spot on operations session Jimmy! - Jason

Aside from realistic modeling, I run cabooses on trains just to help keep track of them. While model railroad couplers are generally reliable, if I'm running a train and notice it's now caboose-less, I know the rest of the train is sitting somewhere on the layout and I'll stop everything to sort out the issue.

I've read about a similar prototypical use for the red tail lamp or "Last Vehicle" sign. In the event that the EOT indicator was missing, the train would be halted to check if they lost any cars on the tail end!

I run in the 1960's so I still have a caboose on every train. Great video.

I also model modern, and I love Cabooses. I will be using my cabooses as camping cabins that travel from one campground to another.

As always a good video to watch, I model the 60-70 era so caboose's are bread and butter on my upper layout. I do a lot of ops and dealing with a cab does add to the work load you have to plan out. Thanks for another good video

I’m no Ops expert, but I just love seeing a caboose on the end of the train complimenting the loco at the front. Great vid!

Really an interesting way to use a carboose, never though to use it the way you did, Man I'm an old guy and I guess your alway showing me something new.
I have plenty carbooses, I've collected them over the years. So as usually another great video and learning new stuff.

Great video! Many of the caboose’s in my collection are still in service for the conductors and rear brake man. Kinda sad to see the caboose become extinct. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for your videos. I think I had watched about 10 before I realized I hadn’t subscribed. In the planning stages of expanding a Bachmann starter, and you have definitely helped. Can’t wait to hear more. Triple espresso Cafe’ Bustelo, 4 sugars, 4 oz milk- AKA Cuban crack!

It seems the only time you see a caboose at the end of freight trains is just at the state borders for long hauls. Other places they use a caboose once in a blue moon not too often. The deliveries they make are local runs.

Being a OO gauge steam modeler brake vans (basically the british equivalent to a Caboose) are still in use for my stuff, but that's a dope use for any who might have an old caboose lying around rather than having it sit in a box or as a prop

On my fictional railroad the caboose is still mandatory. So when other railroads enter my line they get a caboose added to their train. One thing about model railroading is even when modeling real railroads you can change history to fit your needs and wants.🚂🚃🚃🚃

One of the reasons that I model the era I do is because I grew up with cabs and I love 'em. I see "shoving platforms" a few times on the UP where I live, on a local near where I live.

I also model an era that doesn't really see cabeese, but I love running a train with a caboose because I've always thought they were so cool, so I do two things. One, I accurately model caboose operations in their today form. Two, I stretch the rules of prototype modeling a bit. I typically run a caboose on my Class 3 freight trains, my locals, my Mexican freight train, and my maintenance of way trains. Even as a kid I remember most railroads no longer using cabeese but some that still did on regular freight trains. For example, the Chicago South Shore & South Bend Railroad being one of those that still used them in my childhood. I'm in my early 20's now.

I did see a caboose on a train a while back escorting a heavy duty depressed center car. I usually use cabooses to mark the end of my train on the large club layout. It helps me keep track of where the end of my train is.

I'm trying to put together a nuclear waste train. I have two triple-axle DODX flat cars to go between the locomotive and the caboose. Just waiting for micro trains to release their DODX center depressed flats with nuclear waste load. A great use for a caboose on a modern layout.

On my tiny layout I am still undecided whether or not to have cabooses. I like the look of them, and it reminds me of being young and waiting for the caboose to appear. Off topic, I do have a question that might lend itself to a possible new video suggestion. I am unsure where I need to place signals and what they do exactly. What direction to turn them, why they should be placed there, which type to use, etc. Signal education, if you will. Note: all my signals will be non-working and just used to decorate the area to look realistic. I will buy some made on a laser printer that I found. However, if I purchase them, I would like them to be placed properly. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Nice session.
    Just wondering 2 things
1 connections how do you disconnect, what is the tool you use?
2 run around - might have cut it for time, but does the loco go completely around the layout to reposition? I missed that.
By the way, very soothing background tune.

Off topic question...(I figured the latest video might get the quickest answer).
I am a noob (and damn near a complete numbskull when it come to electrical), working on my 1st layout.
I have wired up my train station and platform lamps...no issues with the "Just plug" system. I can understand it, can do it, and like it!
    Questions are...
    1. Lighting 3 buildings....can I splice them all together and run all three into a single plug? (lights I have for this are "just plug")
    2. I have 10 street lights(Evemodel), that came with 10 resistors(?). Can I run all the blacks together to a single line - resistor - "just plug" (same for red, without resistor), so that all 10 are on a single plug? Or...do all 10 need to be wired separate, each with a resistor, to a bus/hub unit?
I have just a single "Just Plug" with 4 slots, and really don't want to have to pay the $$$ for more to run every light individually.
