Is it just me that loves these dudes no matter what they talk about? Just love the personality and the camaraderie here! Keep up the good work! Also the references are fire! haha
You are not a douche. You two have such amazing banter that it makes me feel like I'm just at the hobby shop enjoying time with my friends while I paint my miniatures. Love this stuff. Keep being you, your guys style just works.
I think John may have misunderstood the whole garage kit thing- you don't get a box full of old Apple mice and junk from the garage, you get a resin or vacuum-molded plastic (or vinyl) model kit of a piece the artist originally made out of whatever.
Another good episode! Converting is probably my favorite part of the hobby, as it really encourages creativity and allows you to inject more of your own influences into a model. The Inq28 community is really great for that sort of thing. K03rnl and Modern Synthesist are both great!
Guys, entertainment wise, your podcast is the best hobby thing I currently have on my list on youtube. Beastgrave, Skullsmashing, Planetkilling thanks for doing it (wanted to go with some badass keywords we all so love ;) ). By the way - converters most of the time call themselves kitbashers on Instagram and their craft is called kitbashing. k03rnl is among the masters, but if you are interested, you can also check ingrimmson - his work is a different category of converting. Also, you should check 40kmechbuilds on instagram. His T'au suits and Ork dredz are mind blowing! Again, thanks for another great episode. Cocklips 10/10
On the subject of painting a little everyday, that is impossible for me with kids and other hobbies, but I try my best. I picked this hobby back up about 3.5 hears ago, and it was slow going at first. Learning to paint all over again after nearly a 20 year break. This year I have done well. I have painted some Conan minis, about 40 Lord of the Rings minis, painted a Skaven Mordheim team, and completed 7 Necromunda gangs.
As far as the question of "Should the conversion be part of the judging criteria?" - NO! The contests in question are painting contests. The miniatures & bases are only the canvas to show the painters skills. The conversion of the miniature and building of a base can help to inspire the painter. They can also help sell the story the painter is try to tell/show with their painting. But in the end they should not factor in to the score of their painting. Now if the contest was about building a miniature either from scratch or a conversion and painting them. Then YES! Because that is part of what the contest is about.
It's a shame the Thor conversion video isn't as popular as it should be. It actually inspired me to pick up my bones 4 pit fiend, Agramon. I disliked how the left hand connected to the wrist. I picked up the extra bits and bobs that came with him. (various swords, fireball, free hand etc.) I picked a nice cleaver looking sword and got to work. Since all the extra parts are for his right hand, the biggest conversion that was needed was transferring the sword to that left fist. There was a lot of tinkering involved but for a first time conversion, I'm satisfied with how it turned out! A particular technique from the Thor video that really helped me out, was using extra flakes of plastic and welding it into the cracks as filler. Keep up the great videos guys.
Bluejays are good looking birds, being a west-coaster, we have the Stellar's Jay instead of bluejay. Good job Jon for not knowing French. For terrain videos, I gotta give a shout out to Eric's Hobby Workshop, good stuff from that Canadian. Jon is right on this point that if you keep someone engaged and entertained, I watch all of these even though I don't think I am ever going to be a competition level painter, I enjoy watching you guys interact.
Love the podcast. Very entertaining delivery. Also when Jon snuck in the meat and potatoes I got a malevolent vision from the gods of chaos. A meat and potatoes tee. With papa nurgle at the head of a table with a space marine on a plate with an apple in his mouth. I know copyright infringement or something. Just thought it sounded kool and had to share. Also Jon ninas anagram of epic proportions NINJA SON!
@@trappedunderplastic Thanks Scott! And thanks for the mention ☺️ I'm glad you like what I'm dishing out. And I was kind of surprised by your opinion on watching people paint stuff vs conversions. Not sure why, but I always assume that people who focus more on painting than conversion don't respect conversions. Guess I'm wrong on that point. And i tend to take the definition of "conversion" as any non-standard departure from a stock model. Even a headswap is a conversion. The goal of defining it so broadly is to encourage more people to do anything they can to break their models out from stock. And to avoid being elitist.
1. Before this year Golden Demon, GW published couple of videos/articles with advices how to go to this competition. And there, they also talked conversions and they said - if you are good at it, do it, it will raise your chances. But if you are not good at it, it can ruin your scoring, so rather stick just to painting. 2. More effort/skills definitely goes to scoring at the competitions. Look at Golden Demon this year - the slayer sword has been won by a completely custom piece, sculpted from scratch and painted by the guy.
I try to make it a daily routine to sit down and paint for at least 15 mins everyday no matter what, once I'm already sat down I end up staying for an hour or so. I also sit down and paint while listening to this podcast.
Jon, I imagine music videos all the time listening to the radio. Most times, it's inspired somehow by imagining the video taking place in whatever I'm driving by (aka a field, factory, under a bridge)
Scott, your gaming experience rings very true to most Central/ Eastern European gamers. We didn't really have the old consoles here (none before 1989), but by the early 00's most got PCs. For me, my first game was Starcraft

This was an excellent episode on the off topic. I lean toward Jon on the UA-cam thing. I really enjoy the videos that explain technique and, just as importantly, walk me through the artist's thought process. Just engage me as if you were setting with me, like you are in your podcast. Those are the videos I like. As long as it's engaging, I'll learn what I want to learn and be entertained at the same time. Personally, I don't need creation such as conversion, because I know I will never try that. Explain to me what color and why you like it and how you put it on; I'm in. You, is generic for any creator, by the way.
I feel you with the whole creating thing vs not creating. It might just be you wanting a breath of fresh air of something your so deep into. Being a sculptor for miniatures I started painting minis (not the ones Ive worked on) because I'm around sculptures all the time that I need something refreshing. Even in sculpting I mostly make humans so for my personal work I have to go the opposite way and do monsters or something different.
Id probably say I enjoy more than 30% of the process as a whole, but on a per-miniature basis, it can really depend whether I enjoy more than 30% of the painting... Anything I can smash out with the airbrush with cool fades, etc is so much fun for me, but basecoating or doing large areas by brush is just draining, unless it's a single figure / small group, and I know I only have to do it 1 - 3 times and I can make it look beautiful (like an infinity mini/squad). But if its something like basecoating half an army's surface in a white/grey/yellow with garbage coverage, it takes all the fun out for a long time. :(
I was pretty inconsistent with my painting routine. Then one day, I decided I was going to paint an hour a day. I get up at 5.30am and paint for just over an hour every day before everyone else gets up. It took a while to get adjusted but now it is a routine and it has made a big difference.

I think if someone was teaching a class and had someone filming the lesson... that would dope. Some of them are just painting. Recently he has been making his conversion video, then doing a painting of that mini. I'm always interested when he posts a new thing.
I finally got a wet palette after putting it off for years. I leave it at my work area and a model. Sometimes you just need a break from the screen. I walk or I paint. I've painted for the last ten days and my pile of shame has come down by 10 models. Thats exactly 9 models more that I have done in the past 2 months. On top of that my son wants to paint with me. I've never been so disturbed as to find out that he loves Slaanesh models. My son is 6. I bought some pink horrors for him.

Haha....if I become a patreon then you can both have a tee shirt....also I listen to a podcast called 'Life after the Cover Save' and they were talking about trying to get you guys on....thatd be cool
I think you huut the nail on the head about you not being a great carpenter so you want to see how they got there. I feel the same with you and others painting videos. However, I do like when someone can freeze a shot, or add some to show exactly what you mean. I also think personality is important with the information.
I'm new to the hobbie, i know its a lot of work but in the news section would it be possible to have images of the minis you,re talking about? It's a lot (and weird ass names) to google for noobs like me :p
I don't struggle watching mini painters paint, but I'll admit I don't seek them out strictly for entertainment purpose. I usually watch someone paint a mini either because they've identified a technique I want to learn more about or I have that particular mini and I want to know what they did to paint it so I can get tips or do something similar. I mostly watch mini painting videos because I want to learn how to paint THAT SPECIFIC mini. Like I'm not going to watch someone fix a part on a car just for entertainment. I'm going to watch the video to replace my brakes when I need to replace my brakes. Thereafter, I don't care about those videos but it's great that they're there when I need to watch them. I don't know if mini painting will ever be strictly for entertainment. Honestly, what I dislike about alot of mini painting channels are all the non-mini painting videos. I feel like they're straying more towards dipshits like Logan Paul or other millionaire streamers pandering for them views. Maybe it's just me.

I know this is a bit late but it's a blender guru video. Here is the article with the associated video embedded. www.blenderguru.com/articles/7-habits-highly-effective-artists-bcon-2016
GIVE US THE REFERENCE COUNTER! DO IT! NOW! OK... NEXT TIME!
Paint minis everyday with you? Way ahead of you pal ;) At least 15 mins on the hobby every day for more than a year now :D
If you don't already know about it, you should check out Plasmo - ua-cam.com/channels/53hZgZPlQmKWFRFSpxbSxw.html. Brings the whole conversion, paint, mini thing together and is awesome as a bonus.
I have a few friends who do a lot of AOS info at the honest wargamer you should definatly take a look at if you want someone who really looks into the details of the game system and tactics ( along with 40k) he has a whole book writing up on tactic games
Now that we know Jon’s fuel economy, I hope we get word on Scott’s MPG in 2 weeks.
Literally no one at all:
Jon: So any way, if I were to create a music video for "Africa" by Toto...

You should get games workshop to bring back selling individual parts! Take it you were maybe not in the hobby then?
Where can I find people that sell garage kits? 1:00:22
South African, so God bless the rains down in Africa :D
I converted a scaven and a horse into a very disturbing half mutant rat half horse sorcerer.
I think you huut the nail on the head about you not being a great carpenter so you want to see how they got there. I feel the same with you and others painting videos. However, I do like when someone can freeze a shot, or add some to show exactly what you mean. I also think personality is important with the information.
Also would you consider KDM models to be cenvertable?
I'm new to the hobbie, i know its a lot of work but in the news section would it be possible to have images of the minis you,re talking about? It's a lot (and weird ass names) to google for noobs like me :p
No need to Google, every relevant link is in the description
Blue Morpho Butterfly wings Jon. Check em out.
Please add the reference counter xD
Lol... console? It was an arcade game before it went to console... thats right I'm older than Jon... lol, good job guys, keep it up !
