Intel choose Penang because rejected by United States in developing semiconductor sector and reject any kind of fund or loan for Intel. Intel received approval loan by commercial bank year 1970 in Malaysia so they came to Malaysia. Intel only bring USD 2 million to Penang and received billions of loan from Malaysia bank. Technically, Intel not considered foreign direct investment. Without any help from Malaysia, there is no Intel this company and no semiconductor in this world today.

14.2% is for last quarter of 2022. Forecast for 2023 is slower growth for Malaysia. Which brings me to observe that Malaysia has it good for a long while whilst many countries are facing severe increases in food and energy prices. THIS fact isn't communicated well to the locals leading many to believe we have always had it the worst! Leaving home and working overseas gradually taught me that every population base has its rich and poor, the poor having the worst lot to get a better ticket in life. That's fact.

Despite these rosy stories, the reality is Malaysia struggles to keep the sector growing. The production is low in value, mostly in assembly and testing. Its losing out to Vietnam as they have cheaper labour. Malaysia also struggle to produce high quality product and R&D because these multinationals have zero interest in sharing their knowledge/expertise. These companies also kept threatening the government to pull out if they dont get fat tax breaks and incentives and at the same time hire foreign workers. In total they give very little in tax revenue as well as limited jobs for the locals

In an MNC, it more for the team/department of that company that is based in Malaysia to prove that they have the capabilities to handle higher value workloads. If they can do it, they are more than glad to share the knowledge with the team here to move up in the value chain as they have a lot of gain from it to. Do not always assume that MNCs keep everything under tight lid and only exploit cheap labour. If you work in the industry long enough, you can see a lot of good examples that shows strong knowledge sharing. Hopes this change your view on MNCs.

Malaysia involve mostly in the mid to low value chain, moderate labour intensive segment, consisting of semiconductor test and assembly facilities. Malaysia competitiveness is eroding gradually as new entrants such as Thailand, Vietnam and Indonesia picking up their labor skills and infra to compete with Malaysia. And they offer cheaper labor and infra cost. Currently, Malaysia competitive edge are relative political stability, comprehensive infra and pool of knowledge and skilled workers.
The high value chain of semiconductor design and advanced technology still reside in MNC principal country i.e. developed nations such as USA, EU and Japan. MIMOS which Malaysia govt setup to foster high value chain, unfortunately does not do well.

It's an old commodity industry with lower value added which can be replaced by automation. Malaysia should have gone up over the value chain after 3 to 4 decades. Other countries can do this at lower cost but even they can be passe by robotics. Not insightful at all sounds like old Malaysian government PR piece from the 80s and 90s.

Other countries like India are moving up the value trade for design They have been designing chips for infinion, AMD and Intel. This is some form of denial that is active and it's dangerous because to survive today you need to go up the value chain otherwise AI will take over simple as that. Taiwan is a leading design competency but even they are behind the United States China cannot catch up, South Korea cannot catch up Malaysia's stuck and benefits from unplanned contingencies which are in his favor. In other words it depends on luck. Semiconductors are Just a manufacturing version of palm oil. Remember the Girst Silicon scandal in Sarawak with a over a 5 billion ringgit loss. Taiwan has design and advanced manufacturing which even China cannot compete with. The US has the most advanced design competencies for chip design. It's an unstable industry in terms of value so that semiconductor manufacturing at the middle level gies up and down in terms of revenues and profitability. That's characteristic of commodities

@@zarith87 however Zarith you may have a point. It's difficult to fully predict.
The question I asked Chat GPT directly concerning AI and semiconductor manufacturing in countries like Malaysia.
Can AI replace semiconductor manufacturing assembly such as in Malaysia?
AI can play a significant role in improving semiconductor manufacturing processes, but it cannot fully replace the entire assembly process. Semiconductor manufacturing involves a series of complex processes, such as designing, lithography, etching, deposition, polishing, and testing, that require a combination of human skills and machine precision.
However, AI can help in automating and optimizing certain parts of the semiconductor manufacturing process, such as quality control, defect detection, and yield optimization. AI can also be used to analyze large amounts of data generated during the manufacturing process to identify patterns and insights that can help improve efficiency and reduce waste.
In Malaysia, where semiconductor manufacturing is a key industry, companies are already using AI-powered systems for quality control, defect detection, and predictive maintenance. These systems have been shown to improve manufacturing efficiency and reduce costs.
In summary, while AI can improve certain aspects of semiconductor manufacturing, it cannot fully replace the need for human expertise and involvement in the assembly process.
