  • The little sibling of the new cinema line of AVRs from Marantz has a secret weapon, despite its meager power rating. Check out our full review from Ealan Osborne as he breaks down features of the Marantz Cinema 70s and tells you why he thinks it's one of the most important 7.2 channel AVRs on the market today...if only the price was a bit more competitive, though... :)

This review is pointless if you didn't test built in amp(only connected to power amp) Because most people are gonna use it, to power their speakers...

The audiophile snobs are finally acknowledging that the Cinema 70 and Stereo 70 are not toys. The slim Marantz units have a place in small rooms and small home theater setups.

I picked up a 70s a few months ago now and it's been great. My speakers aren't super demanding so currently driving them off the Marantz, but I'll probably go with a fairly affordable Emotiva BasX 3 channel amp that can power the fronts, and the receiver can keep driving the surrounds etc. I like the unit a lot. Thankfully got it for way less in Europe than 1200, and the pre-outs were a deciding factor. I agree that the US MSRP is excessive. $899 would indeed be much better.

Bought the 70s because of the pre-outs and I don't need more channels than it supports. On top of that the 4k@120 hdmi connections will be great for gaming. It fits nicely in a venn diagram of what I was looking for to replace my current pre-amp. For the same money I could have gotten better audio out of another pre-amp, but then the gaming experience would have taken a hit.

Hearing Awia again brings back memories. I had a 3pc one back in the day. I ended up reverting back to my Dad's old stereo. Probably from 70s or 80s, I got have it in my room around 1990 with bookshelf speakers. Added a dual tape deck. In 2002ish I finally started my surround sound days & kept upgrading from then on.

Way late to the party, but I see this as the most affordable HDMI 2.1 pre/pro. I live in an apartment and try to keep my ht setup as low key (visually) as possible. I do agree 9.2 would have been perfect. But I can see trying 4.1.2.

Purchased this Marantz amp this week from richer sounds Stockport (uk) with monitor audio bronze speakers. Also demo’ed rhe denon 2800 amp and some Dali and Wharfedale speakers. I thought the sound of the Marantz and MA bronze speakers was the standout performance. I would also like to thank this review for me considering the Marantz rather than just going for a Denon amp. Really great video review

I mean, the Marantz NR1711 exists at $800 and there's no way Marantz is going to cannibalize that model for this one.

  • @demofilm

i must say it is already down to 700 euros here in the netherlands, and for that money you do not get the same slim line featured set. also i do not use pre amp out, but for normal listening the 50 watt is more than enough. i had an onkyo 140 watt per channel, but this thing goes toe a minimum of 50 watt before even thinking of clipping. it is in my opinion not that bad of an amp.

Totally agree with your rant. HOWEVER, what is baffling me is why are these brands now coming out with an affordable AV Processor we can connect to Power Amps? Dont get it. When i was younger, we had loads of processor options from cheep but quality bands. Now AV processors are a fortune!

Thanks for sharing your perspectives and this review with us all. I am considering getting this unit, and the preouts are a key reason for my choice. I would have also liked to have dedicated stereo XLR inputs for music. External power amps are, as you said, key to any multichannel system. Your time is greatly appreciated

Great AVR/Amp combo Elon! Best of both worlds with separates. Surprised it has pre-outs, but yes it needs to be under $1k. I had an all-in-one 2ch unit when I was a punk teenager too, nostalgia it brought back when you showed your Aiwa.

I have the Cinema 70s with the stereo pre outs into a Camebridge audio CXA81 intergrated amp in a 7.1 setup. I'm more than happy. I only use the CXA81 for music as a stand alone amp.

  • @boneseyyl1060

I have been mucking around with home theater since about the mid 90's. I even had laser discs. And frankly I think anything more than 5 surrounds plus subs is simply overkill, unless you have a large dedicated theater room. I doubt that is many people, quite frankly and the ones that do have that are not looking at the Cinema 70. I have been using my old Denon 2805 from 2005 quite happily, but this was pre HDMI days so needless to say it is a bit long in tooth at this point. But it also sports a fullset of pre-outs Streamng? I use an OPPO blue ray or a cheapo media player for that. So I have been getting along fine. But it's time to get with the modern world now.

  • @carlosfranco

I just picked up some 600m ii’s and I was thinking about the 70s myself. Will the 70s be enough to power those? I have a SVS PB12 NSD sub I was gifted to use as well to start.
