I play 3h, 5i, 7i, 9i, 50*w, 56*w, putter. I use the Loma XL. I play from the senior tees. I walk all the time, unless I’m with a friend who refuses. I shoot low to mid 80’s usually, and I never do better with more clubs.
Funny about hitting clubs different distances...when I am on the range, I will try to hit 3 different clubs to the same target and distance. Its hard to do at first but boy does it make you a better player and you start to get a lot more feel in your game. I will also try to take the same club and flight it differently...like hit a high shot, a more medium height shot and a low shot. Thanks for the Videos!
A great skill to have. As I have gotten older and the swing speed has slowed, the gaps between irons has narrowed so I go with every other iron now and work on different swing lengths. It's actually easier than full swings too.
Worked on the Banff golf course and the guys I golfed with we had a 3 club challenge,1 wood, iron and putter ,and really was great fun ,plus you learned how to shoot different shots plus surprising our scores were very close to what normally did
Good stuff, I started minimalist golf back in 2014 after an operation and I just wanted to walk and get back into walking. Loved it, selected half a set that I need and haven't looked back. Sold most things since then and in truth because it's fun I've not really missed a full step up.... One thing, I need a stand because of the weather in the uk can catch you out
I love playing from different tee boxes. If I can get an early morning solo booking I will play 2 balls from 2 different boxes Maybe my regular tee boxes and all the way up to the nearest boxes. Before covid I was able to do this a lot easier, but my local courses are Is still much more crowded them before. It really helped me learn to play alot of different shots. I would keep score from my Regular tee at times. Alot of the time I wouldn't, and if there was no one behind me I would drop alot of balls and hit many different shots especially with the scoring clubs. I was late to golf vs alot of my friends so I found this was one if the ways I was able to "catch up" playing 2 rounds at a time almost really helped me take advantage of my time. Thanks again for a great video and I will try this taking a few clubs out soon!
I play a half set; a driver, 19 degree hybrid, 5,7,9 iron, 48 degree gap wedge, 56 degree sand wedge and putter. Most times one can cover the distance in between clubs by gripping down and swinging a little easier.
I use the original Loma Sunday bag. Great bag, light and high quality. Holds 8 clubs max, but better with 6. I definitely don’t need 14 for any course I play, but then again, I’m not a great golfer. I love walking and carrying the bag. It makes golf so much fun to walk.
Love this video!!! I've recently got into golf and already fed up of lugging a full set of clubs and pockets full of junk around the course. It reminds me so much of when I was fishing regularly and took far to much gear with me - I then streamlined that and have a rod holdall, a backpack and a chair. So it's really reaffirming to see this video and remind me I can also do this with golf!
Wow, that's crazy. I usually carry 7-8 clubs in my Sunday bag. I like to walk and carry my bag. It's so much nicer carrying half the weight. Maybe I will try just 4 clubs. Or not...
Some great points made in this video! I took the same advice about hitting clubs different distances from an old Nick Faldo VHS, and my favourite shot to play is choking down on a 3 hybrid which i hit about 175, but get a really predictable draw with that shot. Most times I game 10 clubs. Driver, 3H, 5-SW + the essential putter! I took out the 3+5 fairways as my home course is pretty short. Some nice quality features on that bag!
Most of us started out with a starter set of Northwestern Clubs that had a Driver, 3 Wood, 3, 5, 7, 9 Irons and a putter...That's Seven Clubs...Other than adding a Sand Wedge or Dual Purpose Wedge (Tommy Armour 58* Over and Out), for an eighth club, do we REALLY NEED more than that!?!?!? I can see where some would replace a club or two...Take out the 3W for a 5W, or replace the 3I with a 3H, or maybe replace the 5I with a 5H, or maybe just go with a Driver, 5W and a 2, 4, 6 and 8 irons with a dual wedge and putter...That's 8 clubs as well. Sometimes Less is MORE!!!
I used to carry and walk almost everywhere. Even where it wasn't recommended. Even when the golf cart was included. But, with age, I surrendered to using a trolley. For many years, I used a manual trolley. Recently, I purchased an electronic trolley with a remote. AWESOME! It allows me to walk a lot of courses, especially when playing 9 holes. When I carried all the time, I used a 7"-diameter bag weighing 2.5 lbs. I loved the slimmed-down nature of it, as I didn't like carrying a lot of gear anyway. I don't think I'll be carrying anymore, however, especially since getting an electric trolley. Love the back you're showing, however. Good stuff.
Speaking of golf bags, you should check out Subtle Patriot. Really premium cart bags. Veteran owned and they donate to boots to suits which helps veterans transitioning from military service to civilian career. I was just shopping the latest from ping, sun mountain, and other major brands but quality on Subtle Patriot was great with a good cause.
Since I am carrying a lot less clubs now a smaller bag makes sense. I have a range bag, but it's too small. This one might be perfect. I only carry every other iron now and one wedge and one hybrid so don't need the huge cart bag I have now. Something I need to get hand on though. Still good review of one option.
getting into the game and im a "minimalist" so this video is exactly what Ive been looking for. I'm big on staring new hobbies with quality gear that will get me the most growth without burning a hole in my pocket. I feel like I learned a lot here.
Gabe, 2 times a week I play with some of my coworkers who play from the 3rd of 4 tees. They are older and don't hit the ball very far. It is a ton of fun since they are all funny guys. I play with them and play irons only. My longest iron is a 5 iron and it has helped me immensely with ball striking. I almost never take a penalty stroke and am usually around 0-4 over par. Since doing that I have shot my only 3 rounds under par from the tips.
I thought for sure that you wouldn't have any birdie opportunities but you proved me wrong. That bag is pretty cool. I really like the stand and the flexible bottom to keep it sturdy. Wow Gabe, nice punch shot with the wedge under that tree and great putt to save the par!
if you are playing with less than you should always put a chipper in... why not? makes some shots totally fool proof and you have the room for it. the only argument against chippers is that they take up a bag spot.
I like the idea of a little half bag, sunday casual kinda set up but i never walk so its to easy to just load the whole bag even tho i almost never pull the 60 out. I fully agree with hitting different clubs different ways. I have a pretty decent 8iron bump and run and a nice 4iron punch/punch cut when needed. I cant say ive never thrown a club.
Years ago we played a one ☝️ club scramble tournament . I played with a six iron . It was so much fun . I even learned how to get some spin coming out of a sand trap .
I will say having watched those like a certain British UA-camr I love watching, he would play a par 5 with clubs like only a 7 iron and try and make par. It opened my eyes, now I just have to get out a lot more.
Great video Gabe…I wish I played enough to mix it up and go out with fewer clubs, different tees, etc…Hopefully that day will come soon…and when it does, I will definitely do some of these things…
I started playing golf at age 51. This is how i roll...5, 7, PW, 3hi, driver, putter and 56 and 50 wedge. The driver and hybrid were given to me. I found the rest at goodwill. I'm shooting 90s. I may purchase newer irons but this has got me feeling good about my bag.
I have played with 12 clubs in my bag the last four years Driver,3W, 4 hybrid,5-PW, GW and SW and putter. I walk a lot so works good to make the bag a little lighter
Oh wow - I'm winning an ebay auction on a little stand up bag like that, quite by coincidence. It'd be pretty funny to turn up to the weekly comp with just a few clubs like that. I think I will. Good one!
I recently played a round and on the front 9 my driver, woods, and hybrids were just not working at all. Shot a 47. So on the back 9, I put those clubs away and basically used a 6 iron to tee off and then shorter irons and wedges from there on in and shot a 41. Sometime less really is more.
Another great video. Thank you. I definitely second on carrying less clubs. I occasionally take bag w/o woods/driving irons and/or go every other clubs (Dr, 2I, 5I, 7I, 9I, etc). This really helps with gapping and matching of clubs. It also teaches you about how variable your distance can be depending on where the ball lands and/or types of lie you are hitting off even with same type of ball strike. I appreciate your review on the Sunday golf bag, I’ve been eyeing on it. I believe the website claims it can carry up to 7 clubs, do you agree?
That’s a great way to do it! As. For the Sunday Bags, the smaller ones yes around 7, but this one will go up to 10-12. It’s a mid-size but still super light.
I don't need a 4 iron, I don't need a gap wedge, and I don't really need a 3 wood. Driver I use 10 times a round. 4 hybrid I use a lot. 5-pw i need, Sand wedge is 105y and in. 58 chipping around the greens , stops faster. Putter, for all my 3 putts.
What's up Gabe! Talk about a bare bone set... 😂. I have an unrelated question... Are you planning to do a golf Meetup this year @Carrollwood or anywhere?
Put your rangefinder in the netting where you have that single ball. You are going to use your laser every hole and you are not going to use that 2nd ball at all (hopefully). Those zippers will wear out if you are going into that same pocket 10 to 15 times every 9 holes looking for the laser.
