I wound up looking into this because I couldn't believe how junk the back and forth situation was. Apparently the 5200 models had a joystick with a number pad on them. In this game, "Realsports Tennis" (Activision also made a Tennis game for the 2600), that number pad was used to input where on the enemy court you wanted to return the ball to. I have to assume that on a Switch version this would be mapped to the right stick, but they let you go ahead and play with just one Joy-Con anyway, which means it's just defaulting to a neutral position and giving them this stagnant ball situation. _In theory._ I don't own this so I can't test it myself, but that's what I would guess is going on.

Even if they weren't using the right controls, wouldnt the CPU players still use them by default?
However, realsports tennis was released as an "Atari 2600" game, meaning you wouldn't have needed to use the fancy 5200 controller. However, I do notice that the picture on the back of the box looks different to the version they are playing here.... I don't know why i'm bothering with this as I can answer my own questions... I just don't want to take it out of the plastic wrap XD

I feel like, once again, Atari could have leveraged the power of the Switch by using tilt for aiming. You know, like have it snap to the closest of the 9 available directions.

You're supposed to use the keypad to tell WHERE you want the shoot the ball to when you hit it, this IS a 10 button controller on the Atari 5200 after all.
This may be true but then why did the computer players just constantly hit it into the middle?
S-My-Q Atari games had 32 KB of memory. I’d say there wasn’t enough space to program two AI players at the same time. They should have tried it one on one with the computer.

So, how does that work for the Switch Port?
The manual says something about needing the difficulty switch in the down direction in order to hit a wide variety of shots
Btw, don't know if anyone else was curious enough to look this up, but SUPPOSEDLY,
according to the atari manual, you can aim the shot based on what part of the racket hits the ball.
(i.e. if you hit it near the handle, you push the ball to your right, if you hit it near the edge, you pull it to your left.)
No idea if there's is just broken or what.

I wonder what the Grumps would think of a common factory job if they can find fun in a Tennis videogame. They have literally managed to find away to make an Atari game about TENNIS into something unbelievably unforgettable.

I don't know how far you guys are through the Atari Classics, but please give "Demons to Diamonds" a try. It's an interesting spin on a two player shooter. Also, it used the "paddle" controller which was a spinny knob like the Tempest arcade machine!

i still think my favorite part of this game is how Arin *did* find a way to do other shots, but neither one of them could figure out how it happened, and then the cpu players never used those shots either
According to quick google search and reading the old manual for this game it says can lob ball by running backwards and hitting it, does hard hit when run towards net and hit it, everything else is just normal type hit. I'm surprised they never looked up the instructions given how frustrated they were becoming.

i think it has to do with the port itself. The atari 2600 had a joystick controller that i'm assuming depending on what direction you moved the joystick on the hit it would go in that direction. For some reason the port decided that the only direction the ball was going to be moving was straight forward.

Ok, so this is Realsports Tennis 5200.
It used a controller with many buttons. You use those buttons to select where on the court you wish to hit the ball. You hit a different button to select a lob shot. Arin found a way to hit the lob shot button somehow. Congrats to him.
The relatively well-made sprite animations made it seem a little bit more real too... which makes the entire situation even more absurd. It feels like something that I would watch on sports TV. Just imagine this happening on TV :D. That's so dumb ;).
I went absolutely bananas watching this, I love it
I find it interesting how when they play more recent games and don't know what to do, everyone loses their marbles and is like "This is so hard to watch", but with older games like this people are like "Yeah, it's okay they don't know how to play. It's funny now."

Every time I rewatch this, through the first few minutes of Arin and Dan legitimately excited about a new tennis game and having fun, I'm like, "Oh these poor naive souls. They're in for a wild ride."

I *HAD* to look up the controls for this game.
This is RealSports Tennis for the Atari 5200. The 5200 had a joystick with a number pad (basically a phone keypad) that was part of it and you are suppose to use that number pad to determine where on the court you want to hit the ball. Guessing they were emulating this on.. some system, and either didnt assign the numbers, or didnt have access to the bindings to set them. So that seems to be their issue.. Either way, it looks like a janky controller and weird way to play.

Okay, TELL ME I'm not the only one with a mind blown to smithereens because the Atari 2600 had a computing power as competent as Mario Tennis (2018) only with lesser pixels!
I mean, sure, there's gotta be some weird aerodynamic calculations going on; but the biggest difference that's been made in 20+ years is the graphical complexity of the game, but the game itself is probably the same.
EDIT: I want a loooooong episode of them hitting back and forth while they talk about something. Like, just two friends talking about something we can all relate to. Bully problems, a terrible girlfriend, THE MOMENT ARIN KNEW SUSIE WAS THE ONE, just... anything, with that soothing little *dut... dut... dut...* for a soundtrack.
