i love your crowd shots. imagine walking around downtown and some guy is ranting about oil companies with a lapel mic blue taped to his sweater

Fun Fact: Schmertz is "Pain" in German. Well, technically the word "Schmerz" without the T is "Pain". But close enough. I think the name is perfectly suiting for a guy that inflicted and through his legacy still inflicts tons of pain to our planet's climate.
I had the same thought. He's brought a great deal of pain to the world.
Excellent coverage on the topic. I’m afraid as a regular consumer of news media I was confused by the commercials and messages oil companies were sending out. Makes me sad to admit that their interference was working. Thank you for making this video to remind average folks like me the truth.
Don't feel bad about it, at all. This is predatory marketing that's designed to manipulate your thinking. Keep in mind Rollie has a masters in environnement and I'm sure a significant part of his studies was based around studying these exact things.
Speaking from experience, once you realise you've been had a few times, you become really weary and systematically double check the origin and intent of various ads.
It was great working with you Climate Town! In all sincerity, we appreciate your transparency on all fronts - from advertising to clearly vocalizing your beliefs. Transparency is key for creating a trustworthy news environment. Keep up the good work!

I really appreciate so much you including concrete actionable things in all your videos. "here is a problem, and a suggestion for something you can do about it right now" does wonders for my anxiety when so much of what I see and hear day to day is only the "here is a problem" part.
Tells you a lot about the channel. He's not just trying to inform you about something. He's actually pushing people to do the right thing. A clear call to action is so important. Great to hear that real people feel this way. It is a key part of Climate Reporting these days - we need to be providing solutions, not just problems. It breaks down the challenges and halts apathy.
@@coastaku1954 there are smaller things we can do as a collective, like writing emails about how much we hate fossil fuel ads! personally i’m going to try to get around that today
@@hallehuckleberry That will just make you sound whiny, no one listens to them
This is really important, holding media outlets accountable for their reporting is a crucial part of the fight for a safer climate. Because whoever controls the media controls how and what people think.
And those people are now all multi-billionaires with way more power and control over everything than ever before, thanks to the internet and software tech.
I was actually part of a documentary crew and the whole project was funded by Exxon-Mobil. They originally told us they wouldn't even want to be recognized, just happy to provide the funding. As the project neared completion though, they started to get more and more involved in putting their name on it. It's not in the credits itself, but at the premiere and all the literature produced it was quite prevalent.
They also asked us to make changes to the documentary specifically because it might put one particular politician in a good light, someone who did not have a good opinion of the company at large.
not surprised
They didn't pay for it out of the goodness of their own hearts. They had an agenda to push and that was their strategy.
maybe the people responsible for the documentary should learn to use their brain wtf

Props to UA-cam for finally allowing creators to block some kinds of ads.
But also knowing they have a category for "get rich quick" ads which is scams 101 and they still allow those in their platform is kinda depressing ^^
Well at least they're transparent about not giving a F on ad content as long as it's "legal" (in at least 1 country) and lucrative!
To add on what others have already said in terms of this channel being one of the viewers' favorite discoveries on UA-cam, the fact that you regularly refer to more potentially high quality informative and educational content is deeply appreciated.
Super stuff. I know the tobacco industry’s playbook well, and how it was the model for the fossil fuel companies (another podcast worth checking out is ‘How They Made Us Doubt Everything’ by the BBC) but I didn’t know about the origins of the advertorial! Herb Schmerrrrzzzz
... which is German for "Spice Pain". 😅
The amount of ads I get on FB about how Shell is installing 10000 new electric chargers or what ever is insane.
I think it's because like it's mentioned in the video, they specifically target people who don't like oil companies, to introduce doubt and make it seem like that maybe they're not that bad.
About half of my ads are from BC Forestry and Oil & Gas companies, and how they're, like, hugging babies during sunsets and making the sky blue and generally all feel-good crap that just makes me think "I literally worked for you for ten years, why are you lying at me".
I’ve always assumed that ads are able to target specific keywords as well. So if I had an anti climate change ad then I could target “east climate change actions” or something in order to try to target a very specific audience.
Afterall, I’m pretty sure that’s why so many social media companies can make so much off of advertising: being able to target a group with your ad and waste less money.
@@SaveMoneySavethePlanet What is annoying is that even if you turn down personalize ads it still seems to do that, I turned mine down and yet I was incredibly annoyed by an ad of one beverage company in my country claiming they are using 100% renewable energy and I'm like that's not a big deal, so is my house, my country electrical grid is 83% renewables but like most people would just find it impressive, I'm so sick of greenwashing.

Something insane I learned this year? We don’t need a single politician to fix the world and make it the way we want. Y’all are so talented and hard working I honestly don’t believe they could stop us.
Thank you for this, once again, fantastic video! Media companies should totally be shamed for what they've been doing. If only we the public could focus on something for longer than five minutes at a time..
This is infuriating. They think we’re stupid, and they’re not wrong.
This channel is, without a doubt, the best climate concerned channel in UA-cam. Solid research, good script and delivery and also call to action that everyone can follow to make a change. We need more people like you guys to deliver us from fossil fuels and save the planet as we know it. I'll keep looking forward to your next video!
did he tell you to plant a fkn garden?
i must have missed it.
choosing future cannibalism is insane.
He's awesome, if you like this check out American Resiliency. I know it sounds like a right wing channel but Dr Emily Schoerning is a scientist who reviewed the entirety of the American Climate Survey, realized it was too dense for the average person to deal with (but saw big companies were using the info to their advantage) and basically said, F this, I'm going to let everyone know what this means. She goes state by state and assesses their likely climate future and tells people how to be safe (and resilient) in the coming climate crisis.
And while she primarily focuses on American climate future (because that's the data she had best access to) she is branching out to try and give ppl from other countries some kind of baseline knowledge.
There's actually quite hard competition imo. Potholer54 and Simon Clark are two other greats that I follow as well.

These guys were probably real. When you make billions, you can run a real environmental department from your marketing budget, and maybe sponsor some university researchers, too. The dishonesty is not in the purpose, but in the scale of the efforts.
Just cancelled my paid subscription to NYT thanks to this video, and cited these ads as the reason. Thanks for the info :)
I'm so grateful to channels and content creators like Climate Town for producing these incredibly helpful and informative videos, which is something very welcome for me, considering that here in the UK our 'public service' broadcaster (that the the public are forced to fund should they wish to watch any live broadcast television) is far too busy inviting climate change deniers onto their prime time panel shows, than to properly cover issues like the ones raised on this video.
Thank you for the important work you do.

Good on you for grabbing some ad dollars conscientiously. Folks often rage on creators for "selling out," but I'm just glad Climate Town is growing. Keep doing you!
Right?!? People forget that creators have to put food on the table just like the rest of us. If they’re doing it without compromising their morals then I don’t mind at all.
Heck, in this case it even actually adds to the message which was awesome!
The ads aren’t based on the video creator. They are based off your search algorithm lot of people that have watched him have ads that support opposite messages. Still cool then?…. Serious question
@@phillyphilly_lii6441 its possible to tailor your ads on google. Under settings theres an option for ads and you can chanhe what you get there.
I have turned off ads tailored to me years back because I didnt want google to give me ads based on what ive searched for (it felt extremely creepy to see ads for sited i regurlarly use). The result of that decision has given me ads for: oil and gas companies, christian dating apps, far right extremist news and talk shows, online casinos and lootbox mobile games.
If i dont want to see ads for oil and gas companies, google demands that i to turn back on personalised ads and then i can tailor what ads i want to see. So ive been debating with myself on my desire for digital privacy vs allowing ads that are according to my morals

I sent my emails from Changemakers. If you're writing to WaPo, it's worth noting that banning oil and gas ads sends a subtle but powerful message to federal policy-makers that oil and gas money is too dirty to touch. This should help persuade them that it's time for fossil fuels to go.
"powerful message to federal policy-makers that oil and gas money is too dirty to touch"
a scary amount of our elected federal officials(or their spouses) have ownership in oil/gas companies. They don't care that it's too dirty to touch because it funds their life. Look at Joe Manchin for a great example. The dude literally held up major policy change while having glaring ethics violations because of his ownership of a dirty coal company. Nobody in the federal government gave a crap.
Another easy example is Elaine Chao, Mitch McConnel's wife who used her appointment under Trump to promote her shipping business(guzzling oil).
Carbon engineering produces zero emission fuel now. Also the sun effects our climate far more than all emissions added together.
@@vettesweetnos Carbon capture is presently a lovely but miniscule part of the solution, so let's not pretend that it's presently anything but a side show. And solar flux is fairly constant so our current problems are plainly attributable to our GHG emissions. But it is nice to know that Climate Town has gotten the industry's attention. Still, you won't find fertile ground here for your deceptions. Try Truth Social. Climate Town is for the folks who are already on to you.

Can Rollie also talk about how US Agriculture policies are also expediting climate change ?
A quarter of US grain is sent for Biofuels, I'd much rather have this land used as a carbon sink and invest more on public transport and insulation for reducing fuel use.
And that's not even a tenth of it. Search for this study in PLOS
"Rapid global phaseout of animal agriculture has the potential to stabilize greenhouse gas levels for 30 years and offset 68 percent of CO2 emissions this century"
Cutting out fossil fuels stops emissions which is vital.
But phasing out animal ag doesn't just stop emissions - the land it frees up can sequester hundreds of Gigatonnes of carbon, for next to no money.

Despite it could instead make more money from exports.....
Also, the vast majority of soy is grow for biodiesel. Soy is seperated into soy oil and soy protein, protein is fed to animals but the planted area couldn't be reduced without reducing Soy oil.

What about the sun,? It doesn't effect the planet more than emissions? Carbon engineering and others produce zero emission fuel now.
I love how your videos contain effective humour that doesn’t distract you from the focus of the video itself. Love from Italy❤
What is the focus? That people have been putting gas in their cars for the past century because they were brainwashed by image advertising?
I actually find it to be quite distracting at points. Like the dubstep skit, it just detracts from the experience. If I send this to someone over the age of 40, you just know they will see these intermissions as an opportunity to disregard the entire point of the video because "you can't take this guy seriously" or something. And honestly, I don't fully blame them because some of the jokes (of which there are way too many) just fall flat when you're talking about a very dire and serious situation that implicates everyone.
@@Bella1899 If someone tunes out because of a few jokes then I get the feeling they didn't really want to listen in the first place. Rollie is factually spot on and adds a lil comedic relief because the reality is we(people under 40) don't have much hope right now.
Just wanted to say I cancelled my Times subscription and told them the reason was their advertising clientele. Thanks for the information.
I like how when the guy on the video says 'let's see what ad comes up', an ad for this video gets triggered.
It definitely makes UA-cam ads more tolerable and interesting by paying attention to what ad is being given and asking why.
Its a shame that I can only give this video one like. Great video guys!
That's why I'm running down the comments liking the good comments :D
I know the content of this video is paramount, but my GOD the directing! Every shot is unique and flows into the next. The editing is sharp. The script is just the right amount of funny and serious. and of course the delivery. Did you get a phd in engaging filmmaking because these vids are something else og!
They’re just a team of legit professionals! It stands out when you’re used to seeing 95% amateurs on YT. And yes, I’m well aware that I just called my channel “amateur” but that’s just the truth of the situation.
Yeah, this is Daily Show quality!
This came up in my recommended feed. Excellent video. New sub for sure.
Let's not forget how the ban on cigarettes advertising came about. The Federal Communication Commission (FCC) did it during a break in a different case. The FCC ruled under the then effective law about "Equal Access" that the Television companies had to show one anti smoking ad to every three cigarette ad. The group that won the Ruling then went to Madison Avenue and came up with the "Kick the Habit" ads. Those ads were so effective that to get them off TV, the Cigarette Companies lobbied Congress to ban Cigarette ads (and no Cigarette ads, no more "Jick the Habit" ads). That ad campaign had been so effective that all of the cigarette companies saw a drop in sales, thus wanted those anti smoking ads off TV even if that meant no more Cigarette ads on TV.
The next logical thing would be to ban car ads afterwards. Just saying.
Someone should tell NJB and Citynerd they can do do this also
Rather than that it might be better to try and ban/better distinguish propaganda from ads: most of the "ads" these companies do don't even provide a product to buy, they're just meant to change your mind on some subject.
If there was a way to force advertisements to advertise _purchaseable products_ not _ideas,_ these types of things might become a lot harder to create and pass in the first place. To be fair gaming this would be quite easy, but it'll at least force advertisers to provide a product on their propaganda.
@@makelgrax I would rather just see a tax on Advertising budgets/agencies, to cut into the budgets. Even if its for a "thing" I don't really like the constant bombardment or think its good for society.
I recently found out about this channel and I'm really enjoying the informative comedy format. The "child throwing trash at your house" joke was gold!
So well done. Thanks for the laughs. Will be linking to this in an upcoming newsletter! (also, fyi, not sure you if you can shut this one off or not but got a 'don't get solar' ad while watching)
I remember the early days of Shmert’s add campaigns. He had the more rational sounding articles. The opposition was telling us that oil would be all gone by 1990, that the glaciers would all gone be 2012 and the oceans would rise 12’.
Most people out there want to drive, the zoning boards create cities that require driving by separating residents from retail from office and jobs by keeping them way away from each other.
Living in what is supposed to be in a green city with aggressive zoning rules full of cars because of zoning.
Until the zoning rules are going to be rationalized people are going to be in their cars, and no one is going to give them up. EVER
I'm tired and worn out from the semester, but I found the time to write a quick email to the NYT. If you reading this its your sign that you should too. I promise you can do it!
Another absolute banger from CT! Thanks for fighting the good fight and helping others to do so as well!
Awesome video again but I deffo downloaded Grounded news too, it's refreshing to see a youtuber take a stand against evil ads and strive for genuine companies - I appreciate that.
Ayyy, thanks James!
Great video! To reduce oil/gas, Im riding an a new e-scooter (w/ helmet) for short errands. It’s a LOT CLEANER, and fun.
New video? Helll yeah, can’t wait!
I really admire Rollie
@М.С 🅥 oh bud… no.
