Cross shopped the Accord, Camry and Sonata.
    Things that made a difference:
Gas hood struts versus a hood prop.
Power Trunk where the hinges are enclosed.
6-Speed automatic instead of a CVT.
Dashboard and controls are more streamlined and less obtrusive than many new vehicles.
Moving the gear selector to the steering wheel and cleaning up the busyness that you find on many center consoles is nice.
The driver assistance technology. Lane Keep Assist is the best I have experienced so far.
IMHO, the redesign is a big improvement over the old Sonata with its "catfish" front end styling.
The Sonata also has a lower drag coefficient.
As you stated, the ride does feel Mercedes-like.
Reliability was a concern for me, but I am hoping that because this is a refresh rather than a redesign, that the drivetrain has been vetted and refined by now. Time will tell.

Camry vs Sonata, no contest Camry. Hyundai has an awful reliability reputation and Toyota has upped its game as far as features and gadgets are concerned. From a resale perspective, I will leave that question hanging because everyone knows the answer.

Living in an area that benefits from AWD, having it available as a hybrid on the Camry is a big plus. Otherwise these two are pretty comparable and I'd be interested in seeing how the actual real world MPG shakes out for both of them. Nice job!

If the Sonata had an updated engine it would easily win this comparison. But since it doesn't, you would have to narrow it down to whether the reliability + drivability of the camry matters more, or the looks and tech of the Sonata.

Looking to close on a Sonata this week after a month plus of Camry shopping and I've got to tip my cap to Hyundai for making buying way streamlined than Toyota. Even the XSE/XLE Camrys still have around $4k in optional packages needed in order to get the panoramic monitor, parking sensors, etc. The regional distributors are ridiculous about the port options as well. If you want the Premium Plus in a specific color, you're going to be waiting for your dealer to get an allocation. The Hybrid Limited Sonata in comparison is much more transparently priced. Two trims each for gas and hybrid versions, no packages, the biggest difference is the AWD not being available on the Sonata Hybrid but it's so much cheaper compared to a maxed out Camry that you can just use some of those savings on a set of primo winter tires.

    • @BrosFOURRSpeed

Camry is the leader on hybrid technology with its 5th generation engine. Just remember that Toyota spends alot more on its parts that people do not see and reliability will be its strong suit. I like that the Camry still has the gear lever and a spare tire.
However, I am happy that Hyundai has a normal 6 speed transmission. I respect that Hyundai is not giving up like the other car makers. The sonata looks Great.
Lets hope that other than Toyota, Honda, kia and Hyundai more auto makers will be jealous and compete in this segment again in the future.
