Voice of America (VoA) Interval Signal in HiFi Stereo

  • Original VOA interval signal recorded from shortwave (Willis Conover's voice?) and again in HiFi Stereo clipped/edited from the original source: "Yankee Doodle" by Eric Rogers Chorale & Orchestra.

My father listened to the Voice of America in Romanian during Ceausescu's time. A Romanian gentleman, Mircea Carp, I believe, was speaking, who ended with the phrase...."let's hear only the good". I was listening to a Sanyo radio cassette player. R.I.P. father, C.Viorel

Well, as America is quickly becoming a Communist state, I wonder what voices of freedom and liberty might tune into as we huddle in the darkness awaiting ANTIFA and the Squad to knock down our doors.

You are absolutely right. In Romania it used to be the same. Voice of America along with the Radio Free Europe represented the only source of reliable info for the ones locked behind the Iron Curtain in those tyrant regimes of the Evil Empire. Those voices were causing the "comrades" in power to start shivering.

The former VOA site, Bethany Station north of Cincinnati, is now a broadcast museum featuring VOA exhibits and exhibits about Cincinnati's rich broadcast history. Although the VOA Bethany antenna field is demolished, the iconic WLW tower is still in use not far to the east. The WLW property is being converted into a strip mall, but the transmitter and tower will remain in place; it's now possible to get a close-up view of the transmitter building and tower.

I wish there would be a collection of the historic VOA voices somewhere. Hank Monroe and Kay Gallant continue to be heard in Special English, with series taped in the 1970s. But many others. Mell Guinn was the daily newscaster for the Evening flow introduced when John Chancellor tried to modernize the building in 1965. I heard Quinn actually died at the microphone in the 80s - When Newseum opened in Chrystal City (?) Alan Heil mentioned plans to show VOA there, but no idea whether that materialized, and is the Newseum still in operation.

I am currently working for VOA/Marti Greenville “B” transmitter plant. Most programming now goes to Cuba from Greenville. There are still a few shows that broadcast to L at in America and Africa. Hear this VOA “Yankee Doodle “ intro and outro. Also worked in the VOA DC plant studios all together more than 30 hrs of working. Still wish to work at the transmitter plant. Something about short wave broadcasting-when I turn on a transmitter wonder how many folks are listening. Also I have to repair transmitters that break. Equipment here is vintage. The site was built and commined in 1962. Have worked all three Greenville transmitter plants-one was for receive-other two were transmitter sites. Only one left in current operation-the receive “ C “ plant is owned by the local ECU university. A plant is now abandoned. Worked there for about a year.

Hello Rex! Thanks for your comment. I really enjoyed it because I was one of those guys on the other side of the counter, imagining those powerful VoA transmitters and their enormous antennas in Greenville, in Bethany, in Delino, that brought me closer those friendly voices from the Latin American Service . You couldn't imagine how grateful we were to all of you in the VoA. I started as listener in 1964 following the Gemini space missions via VoA, and in 1988, when I was able to visit the studios in Washington, DC, I met and hugged a news reporter who 24 years earlier had read a letter I sent to the Listeners Club. Incredible! It was very, very exciting. Years later I watched on UA-cam how those huge antennas that were already out of service were demolished. It caused me enormous sadness to see those giants die (Google translation).

First English words I've ever listened to and learnt, back in the 80's in communist Romania. My dad would teach me to play chess and he would listen to the sound of liberty.

I remember that when I was a teenager I listened directly to some international radio stations that broadcast in Portuguese to Brazil (I live in Cascavel/Paraná/Brazil) and among them my favorite was Voz da América, listening to this video now I got a fantastic DEJAVU!

My dad used to listen to this radio, he taught himself English this way, one had to be careful since commies banned it, and constantly interfere.
