Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Ziggo Dome Amsterdam in 2022, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, and Henk Poort, a well known Dutch baritone.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Background to this song. Floor Janson was on a Dutch TV show called Beste Zangers (where 7 singers sing each other songs) and met her childhood hero Henk Poort. Henk was the original Dutch Phantom when the show came out in the late 80's early 90's. They sang this as a duet but Henk would only do it if he could sing it with Nightwish when they came to the Netherlands and Floor and Nightwish agreed. Then along came Lockdown. Nightwish hadn't done this song since 2005 with their first singer Tarja. Floor joined Nightwish in late 2012 when their 2nd singer Anette had problems and they parted ways. This was the band keeping their promise, it wasn't on the set list so the crowd were pleasantly surprised and loved it. Check out Ghost Love Score from the Wacken Festival 2013.
Wow, rare to see a Nightwish reaction before Gabriel has posted...This wasn't the first time they were together, they've been touring for years together. But, this was the first time in 17 years the band had performed The Phantom of the Opera, and the first time with Floor as the lead singer. The last time Nightwish performed this song was 2005, with their original lead singer, Tarja, literally, the night the band fired her after the concert.

Floor was 16 when she became a member of After forever, Floor left the band and formed Revamp later Floor helped Nightwish out as there second singer Anette became very unwell while pregnant during there U.S A. Tour. 2012. 2013 Floor was offered to become a full time member of Nightwish eventually leaving Revamp. During that time Floor finished of her side project Northward and since brought out her own more pop like album called My Paragon. Floor has also performed with many other artists and friends like Epica, Star one, Ayreon with her sister Irene who's a backing vocalist for Arjen Lucassen. Floor also performed with Evergrey, Soilwork, Tobias Sammet's Avantasia, Sabaton plus much more. Floor was trained at a school of Rock also performing arts and trained in classical / Opera. Floor can sing in these genre's Pop, Rock, Metal, Opera. Floor can also growl. Floor has performed a song ( English version ) Called The Fight goes on. This was for an organization called Warchild. Raising money for children suffering from war and ptsd. Floor can sing in Dutch, English, Italian, Spanish, German and much much more. When you want to go further on the path of our 1.83m (6ft.+) tall Dutch Valkyrie Queen Floor Jansen besides Nightwish, here is some background information on the best and most versitale female singer of our time. Floor joined the band 'After Forever' in 1997 at the age of 16. Here are some of my favourites: ‘Energize me’; Monolith of Doubt’ and Dreamflight’.
Floor attended the then new Rock Academy in 1999 and graduated in 2003. She also studied 2 years at the Conservatory (1 year Music Theatre and 1 year Opera).
'After Forever' disbanded in 2009 and Floor started her own band 'Revamp' from scratch. Here she experimented with different vocal styles within one song from full operatic to death growls in seconds. Here are some examples: ‘Misery’s no Crime’, ‘Wild card’ and ‘Disdain’.
Besides managing a band on her own she also did a lot of vocal coaching and as she is a perfectionist, she wants to do everything at 100%+. Eventually she had to pay the price and got a burnout. She had just recovered when end of september 2012 the call came from Nightwish to fill in for the remainder of the North American Tour at first as their second singer Annette got ill. Floor had just 48 hours to learn the whole setlist. There is a documentary made of this world tour: ‘Please learn the setlist in 48 hours’
Floor joined Nightwish after the iconic Wacken concert in 2013 as permanent member of the band. Floor continued to perform with 'Revamp’ also, but it was clear that she could not combine the two for much longer, so 'Revamp' disbanded in 2016. Floor did a side project called 'Northward' where she dived into the Hard Rock scene. The song 'While Love Died is a must see.
Her stunning performances on the Dutch TV show 'Beste Zangers 2019' gave her at last some more recognition in her home country where she was relatively unknown until then. There are numerous guest appearances with other bands to find on UA-cam. To see how to get a crowd of metalheads silenced and in awe watch her featuring with the band 'Epica' and the song 'Stabat Mater Dolorosa’ and to see her in full opera mode, watch her rendition of 'O Mio Babbino Caro' from Puccini. As live concerts were cancelled and home isolation due to the Covid situation, Floor discovered UA-cam in these years. Mindblowing covers, chats with her idols and other singers, vocal masterclasses, personal insights and so much more. She even made a video reacting to herself singing Ghost Love Score at Wacken. Yes Nightwish is a metal band but they are also very versatile as well. There are prog elements, folk elements, classical elements, some classic rock and roll, even some blues and jazz as well. This is the first time that the band performed this in 17 years as originally performed with first singer, Tarja Turunen who was predominantly operatic. The third singer, Floor Jansen, who saw Henk Poort in Phantom when a young girl and went on a Dutch TV show Beste Zangers in 2019 if she could duet with him. He agreed if he could sing it with Nightwish some time. It took 4 years because of Covid lockdowns and this is it. Floor can sing in any style required so has brought so much more to the band.
Great reaction! So the 17 year spread between Nightwish performing this song. Nightwish's original singer, Tarja Turunen, was a classically trained lied singer. It was her classically trained dark operatic voice that helped create the genre of symphonic metal. Nightwish used to perform this song regularly with Marko, the previous bassist (and a fantastic singer himself) as the Phantom and recorded it on the Century Child album. I think it was mainly done because Tarja liked performing it. They last performed it in 2005 at the End of an Era concert and it is available on YT (the band fired Tarja right after the concert via an open letter, it was a very public and nasty split). That version is my second favorite version and the star for me is Marko's gritty and dark Phantom. Their next singer was not operatically trained and couldn't hit those high notes so the song was dropped from the setlist, plus I think the band wasn't interested in performing it ever again. In 2019 Floor is approached to be one of the singers on the Dutch show Beste Zangers. She was mildly interested until she found out that Henk Poort, a famous Dutch musical theater singer, was going to be on the show. Henk is famous for being the original Phantom in the Dutch stage production of the Phantom of the Opera. Floor had seen him in that role when she was a teenager and was a big fans so she jumped at the chance to be on the show and sing with one of her idols. The show consists of a number of Dutch singers and each week one of them is featured and the other singers sing songs that they have done or are important to them. Henk was the featured on the first episode and Floor sang the very first song, Vilja Lied from the Merry Widow operetta. Floor was mostly unknown in her native Netherlands where metal music is not popular. The last show of the season is all duets and Floor asked Henk to sing Phantom of the Opera with her. It uses the Nightwish arrangement but more rock and less metal and Floor uses a more musical theater vocal approach that is brighter and also uses more colors and runs. Floor and Henk became fast friends and have performed in each other's solo concerts. They also did a video of Dangerous Games from Jekyl and Hyde on Floor's YT channel during the pandemic as well as a live performance from Floor's solo concert in Amsterdam in 2021. In the 90s, metal opened up to other styles of music. In Europe people have remembered the tradition of classical and folk music. Nightwish is considered one of the founders of symphonic metal and is still the role model today. In addition to classical, there is also folk in their music.
Female singer Floor Jansen is the third singer to fulfill a promise here. She had met Henk on a Dutch TV show and wanted to sing this duet with him. He agreed if he could sing the song with the band later. Henk sang the Phantom in the Dutch version of the musical for years. He had this version from 2005 in mind with two other singers. For me the better version, but not as close to the original:

They are a Symphonic Metal band with a wide range of musical styles , from very heavy like (Tribal) from their newest record to Celtic style (My Walden) from 2015 Endless Forms Most Beautiful. It's always best to react to live performances.

The best intro to Nightwish is their 2013 concert from Wacken. Just start with the first song reaction and go through the whole show one song at a time. Be warned they have a broad range of material and you never know what to expect next. You will get tons of views doing this. Plus I want to see the expression on your face as you get to hear their male vocalist Marko sing.

Floor can sing any type of music and does, I`ve been listening to this band for over 15 year`s and still obsessed with them. That they are not popular in the US is a tragedy.
This was a special occasion having Henk come to sing. He played the Phantom on stage in Holland for decades. Floor Jansen was on a Dutch TV show with him called Beste Zangers and they sang this duet on the show.

Henk Poort is a well known (Dutch) baritone. He received classical singing training at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam. He won the Cristina Deutekom Competition during his singing training. Henk sang at various European opera houses, such as Ulm and Krefeld. He made guest appearances for, for example, the Dutch Opera, the (German) Deutsche Oper am Rhein, the Hessische Staatstheater in Wiesbaden, (Dutch) the National Reisopera, the VARA (Opera matinee in the Amsterdam Concertgebouw). is a well-known Dutch opera singer and actor who played the Phantom in this musical for many years. He is a baritone Yes, this band Nightwish is fantastic and you will experience and acknowledge that once you have seen and heard more of them.
It was at Floor's request that NW would play this duet live again because of her promise to HP (during the recording of "Best Singers 2019" that he would sing this together again as a guest singer during an NW concert in their ZiggoDome concert of 2021. The fact that it had to wait until November 2022 was due to the intervention of the COVID-19 restrictions. (note: this was not a reunion, Nightwish never ceased to exist, but their repertoire is so large that it took 17 years (2005) before they played this song live again.
Although the band is Finnish their 3rd female vocalist isn’t, she is Dutch. Floor was born on February 21st, 1981 in Goirle the Netherlands. At the age of 16 she started her career (initially) just as the background singer from the Dutch metal band ‘After Forever’ in 1997, but real soon she took over the lead until early 2009 and the band fell apart. Parallel she studied at the Dutch Rock Academy in Tilburg starting in 1999 where she graduated in 2003 and spent two years on classical training with the National Conservatory. She studied Musical Theatre and one year Opera. She plays guitar, piano and flute and has completed 12 years of music studies. She’s a Light Lyric Soprano and her vocal range runs from E3 to D6. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons.
On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ‘ReVamp’, which was disbanded in September 2016. In August 2010 Jansen was a guest in the TV program “De tiende van Tijl”. In that program she sang an aria by Puccini. From October 1, 2012 (while she was within ReVamp still, but recovering from a burnout) Floor replaced Anette Olzon as the singer of Nightwish halfway their Imaginaerum World Tour. After one year (shortly after the Wacken Open Air festival concert 2013) on October 9th 2013, it was announced that she was to become the group's regular new front singer.

You have surely heard the Phantom of the Opera song before , taken from the musical of the same name ?????? If not where have you been ????? Henk Port played the Phantom in the Dutch stage musical Phantom of the Opera.
Henk was the first DUTCH Phantom.
The female singer has been the singer since 2014. She is Dutch and named Floor Jansen. She attended the Dutch rock academy and then a conservatory for 3 years of opera and musical theatre. Henk played the original Dutch phantom and was a hero of Floor’s. You will get a comment from a great member of the Nightwish army I would follow his recommendations. Incidentally Floor is called the “Valkyrie Queen” partly due to her 6 foot height and partly due to the power of her presence! Btw for your own sanity avoid comparing her to Amy Lee of Evenessance it never goes well.

The best version of the song in my humble opnion is from the dvd ''end of an era'' with Tarja Turunen (the first female vocalist of this lengendary band). I do prefer ''ghost love score'' with Floor though. Enjoy the discovery of this band. ''Yours is an empty hope"" is stunning.

Just remember, that for me and many others, the Wacken 2013 concert is one of the best ever made and it sets the standarts for the rest.... which Nightwish tend to meet anyway :) They're also one of the few bands where I prefer to hear the live versions of the songs, because they're just fantastic.
Just continue with their live stuff, because the atmosphere is unmatched, comparing to high polished studio recordings and they are just able to produce high quality output even then. I also recommend not to go down the well-trodden paths of songs, like many before, but to go on your own trail as most of us already knew, how well designed their older stuff is. Literally any song from their legendary Wacken 2013 show is awesome and the whole concert itself ought to be amongst the best concerts ever recorded in rock history.
As you don't like any harder stuff yet (time will come you will), how about starting out with their ballads? "Dead Boy's Poem" as well as "Sleeping Sun" will give you a smooth approach to what is called symphonic metal (their genre). There are recent accoustic versions from both "How's the Heart" and "Nemo" , live from Planet Rock, with only the singer Floor and Troy on guitar, that went so smooth and ought to be pleasant for any kind of ear. You also might approach some of their hit-singles, that successfully entered mainstream charts. They felt more like, Pop-Rock, but the pimped-up version of it. For example "Amaranth" (only on Wacken 2013) , "Nemo" or "Storytime", before you are going to hit their 10min+ songs. Like their "unrequited love hymn" about a relation that never gets across its "friendship-zone", so that love affair never came into existence, staying unrated, therefore called "Ghost Love-Score". P.S. During your research, you will notice that Nightwish have had three different singers since they started. Their current singer Floor Jansen is with the band since 2012. Between 2007 and 2012 Anette Olzon was the intermediate vocalist. Tarja Turunen was their first singer, until the band gave her an open letter after the last concert of their tour in 2005, when they declared that the band will continue with another singer. Afterwards it became clear, that the bands reaction was just the anticipation of what was already sealed.
The band started in 1996, when main composer and head of the band Tuomas Holopainen (keyboardist) and his friend Emppu Vuorinen (guitarrist) successfully invited Tarja Turunen to his Nightwish project. All three came from the same town Kitee in Finnland and were visiting the same school. I guess since the one year younger Tarja entered Tuomas' home to take music lessons from his grandma, she became his inspiration for many songs to come. He even changed the kind of music he was planing to write, just to suit Tarja even more. As a slender and shy spectacle wearer and introvert, his admiration for Tarja must have started out secretly. Over the time Tuomas learned, to transform his emotions on paper and into songs, which Tarja needed to sing afterwards. She admitted once, that Tuomas' many innuendos within the lyrics burdened her at some point. After Tarja started to date her husband Marcelo in 2000 and got married in 2003, the break-up became inevitable. For a reason the two guys could not stand each other, so it was no surprise, when Marcelo once told the public, that Tuomas is jealous on him, due to Tarja. In fact he was extremely jealous, too and accompanied Tarja to all concerts, finally separated her from Nightwish by telling that all official communication with Tarja should only be made through him. He insisted Tarja to leave the band, going for a solo career and the next album shall be her last with Nightwish. The band then decided, it was not necessary, to wait for that album, as Tuomas wasn't able to write her tailor-made songs anymore. "Dark Passion Play" instead was recorded with Anette Olson, while Floor Jansen, desired candidate, was still busy with After Forever, a friendly band, since they have been the support band on tour. After Anette Olzon got pregnant during her second tour with Nightwish in 2012 and Floor's primal band had disbanded, it was time for the famous phone call, you can watch on UA-cam documentation "Please learn the setlist in 48 hours". Floor healed the band and for the first time since many years you see them joyful and smiling all over their faces, as they had found their final singer. That vibe was even taped on the legendary Wacken 2013 recording.

But, be it for your own interest, check out the 'original' duet between Henk Poort and Floor Jansen in Beste Zangers 2019. The interaction between the two is materialising on your screen ... Edit: Now for my second thing to say: You have not heard anything yet! I highly recommend Ghost Love Score from Wacken 2013 -- the Most Reacted-To Music Video On The Internet. And no, I'm not just saying that, nor am I being facetious or trolling. It really is true. And in watching it, you will see just how good this band really is! Because I know of no other band that has this level of composition and execution that is performing and making music today.

As a new fan that prefers Floor to the two previous female vocalists, I must admit that I prefer Tarja singing the female part (by just a little) and Marco singing the male part....Marco makes it a completely different song. Marco makes it metal!

The older version with Tarja is better. She was the original vocalist and has a higher ranger than floor. The arrangement was more rock oriented as well. Check it out, look for the yellow dress.

shame you didn't do the real Nightwish version that this version is emulating, not saying this version isn't excellent but the version with Tarja and Marco from the End of an Era concert is multiple levels of energy greater! This was done as a contractual fulfillment on Floors behalf to Henk Poort (the male singer) and is much closer to the real Phantom than to Nightwish's Phantom!

Floor for me is the best of the female singers Nightwish has had but Nightwish is really missing Marco (or just an elite male singer in general!) and my comment is correct this was Floor following through on her agreement with Henk that got him to do the duet with her during Beste Zangers. At first I stopped watching reactions to videos with Tarja, but even in videos with Floor some guys complained about Tarja, so I can´t stand her anymore. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6).
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot. Plus, huge vocal nerd 😉.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg, where she graduated in 2003. She studied musical theatre and a year of opera. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon (Second singer of Nightwish after Tarja) as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour (And she had to learn the setlist in 48h). On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.

Well...Henk is a Dutch Phantom. This promise was made in Beste Zangers TV show, where Floor and Henk did this song for the first time, that he will sing this song with Floor and Nightwish, when they come to the Netherlands.
And this song was a surprise to the fans. Nightwish performed this song last time 17 years ago with Tarja (First singer), and now the circle is complete...
And that Crowd Roar, when Henk walked on stage, wearing Official "Nightwish Family" T-shirt, but that Floor's last note... it was insane 12,2 sec.
