Sonic Frontiers Review

- Sonic Frontiers reviewed by Travis Northup on PlayStation 5, also available on Xbox Series X|S and PC.
Sonic Frontiers is a delightfully weird and experimental evolution of the Sonic games so many of us grew up with. Its expansive islands are filled with so much variety and pieces of Sonic history, from classic platforming stages to silly minigames, that they’re enjoyable to explore even when awful graphical pop-in is a constant hedgehog spine in your side. Some of the new stuff Frontiers tries out, like the self-contained Cyber Space levels within its open worlds, are fantastic ways to pack as much Sonic goodness as possible into one package, while others - especially combat - are uninteresting experiments gone wrong. - Ігри
I'm just so happy to hear the game isn't terrible

You and me, brotha
Honestly this game was needed. This might extend the Sonic franchise life span for another 4-5 years. Lol Sonic is like two games away of falling into obscurity. Sega needs to keep it fresh or else they might have to drop the character altogether or shelf it for a decade.
A modern sonic game getting a 7/10 is unexpected but appreciated
It's ign so I'll probably like it more

They gave Sonic Forces 6.9
I'm actually so glad Sonic is back to that "usual anime-style nonsense" like you said. The past decade of games felt like Sonic Team was ashamed of the identity they created in the 2000s and instead went for a more childish-humor route. So hearing that the story would be back to that Adventure-era craziness, even if its predictable, has got me hyped!
So true. It’s like they tried to be childish like Nintendo games but it just didn’t work for sonic
@@hypersonicattack Yeah I'm glad it isn't childish like nintendos bayonetta, Metroid, Xenoblade, fire emblem, zelda or Astral chain. It's a a game about a cartoon hedgehog for real adults.

sonic forces got a 7 too
@@nazarenomercado483 it got a 6.9

Igns scoring guide is imaginary and is completely subjective. A shitty cod gets an 8 and then a game widely praised by gamers gets a 6-7

Other game fans: 7/10. IGN doesn't know what they're talking about. How dare they say this game is bad!!
Us Sonic Fans: YAAAAAAAAAY 7/10 We eating boys!!!
This game can serve as a proof of concept and actually allow the game series to evolve
It feeld like a stepping stone to Adventure 3 no joke.
Similar to Zelda Skyward Sword. Then Nintendo released the masterpiece Breath of the Wild mostly based on Skyward game mechanics but polished.
People said the same about Sonic Adventure and it only got worse from there
@@solid_justice5855 Well, with Adventure, you got SA2 right after and then SEGA had to let go of a bunch of people because they were out of money at the end of the Dreamcast lifespan and then they got bought out by a pachinko company in 2003 while also trying to shift their company towards multiplat development. Not quite the same scenario.
Sonic Team have a habit of discarding well received ideas so am hoping they take the positives from Frontiers and expand on them for the next game.
Seeing a modern sonic get a 7/10 is a darn miracle!
Dreams do happen :)
Didn’t generations get higher?
Didn’t generations get higher?
Didn't generations get higher?
the fact a 7 is a miracle i’m surprised the sonic franchise is even still alive
7 was expected. It's obvious the game could have used a little extra cook time but the Sega executives will never seem to learn this lesson. Apparently the devs had to fight them just to get the extra year they got.
What’s your point?
@@Jackattack359 publisher bad
How come the Yakuza games usually come out ok?
@@punani_slayer4209 The Yakuza games aren't cash cows like Sonic is, that's why. Yakuza is also much more popular in Japan than Sonic, and because of that Sega (which is pretty Japanese-centric imo) treats the Yakuza franchise much better than Sonic despite it not really being (like I've mentioned before) the worldwide money maker.
@@DeathClawDC what does that have to do with getting a score on a review? It’s about the hardware not the publisher
It's one of those cases where the old game set an impossible bar to clear. Sonic adventure on dream cast was a masterpiece ahead of its time!
Lost Judgment and Yakuza: Like A Dragon were both SEGA masterpieces and both got a 7 from IGN. I'll gladly accept this score.
Still need to play lost judgement but the yakuza franchise rarely miss
other places are giving it 4/10
i wouldnt trust IGN bro lol
Score doesn't matter with IGN. They always gives COD 9. Or all overhyped games 9.
Actually blows my mind to hear those incredible games got a 7/10… WUT!
Like A Dragon's easily a 9.
Finally, an IGN review who's critique actually sounds like the 7 they give it.
What does that even mean?
@@meric12131415sometimes there's reviews where they call the game amazing and give it a 7. Other times there are reviews where they list 12 flaws that make the game not fun and then give it a 7.
@@thedarklordx that last one sounds rather interesting that might actually fall under the realm of pokemon x and y it was actually quite controversial because the reviewer never gave it the score it rightfully deserved

A 7? Sure, I'll take it. The score depends on the critic's OPINION anyway. IGN gave Sonic Generations an 8.5/10, but they gave Sonic Unleashed something around a 4/10. In other words, review scores these days usually don't matter.

If they just had another year of development time, it feels like this could have been a fantastic game.
to be fair. they like rushing it for the christmas holidays like they always do with sonic. They are looking for money more then new ideas and quality.
Well- SEGA didn't even plan for it to be released this year, rather it was delayed from a 2021 anniversary game to 2022 for the Holidays because Ilzuka argued with them to give ST an extra year. So they did get their extra year, and I'm glad, or else this would have been another 06. However, it's inexcusable how badly SEGA treats this franchise. The fact that Ilzuka had to aggressively negotiate with the company just to buy the team a bit more time shows that they really can't get a handle on the franchise.

As far as the gameplay goes it seems like there’s a fair bit of variety, which is what made the Adventure games so great. Shame the story seems to be more on the generic side, considering it was written by the guy who did the well received Sonic IDW comics.
To clarify, he only wrote the dialogue, Sonic Team we’re the ones who provided him the plot. That’s why the interactions are the best parts of the plot.
Sonic adventure was 1/4 ok and 3/4 terrible. Case in point big the fishing cat, Amy adventure was a slow game of tag and tails and knuckles just had shortened sonic stages with gimmicks.

This game basically is that, minus the character campaigns.
It just blows my mind that they chose not to integrate the platforms and grind rails with the level design.
Like with Green Forest, the grind rails are like vines or sides of tree trunks. If you want platforms to be floating, maybe have small little islands in the air (like how Angel Island floats) that Sonic hops between.
