    I have a very leggy giant milkweed so I was very pleased to be able to watch how you take cuttings from this plant. You are fortunate to be able to get 100% success. I've heard that you normally get 85% success with cuttings from plants. Enjoyed watching this as a refresher before I take my cuttings. Thank you!

    That looks more like Giant Milkweed to me instead of Tropical Milkweed because of the thick stems and large rounded leaves. Tropical Milkweed has thinner stems with longer and thinner leaves, similiar to that of Swamp Milkweed.
    But for just in case you didnt know and were to come across Tropical Milkweed in the future, its recommended to refrain from planting it in your yard because unlike native species of milkweed, Tropical Millweed doesnt respond to the surrounding environment like its counterparts do, and doesnt die back at the end of the growing season, staying green all year.
    Because it doesnt die back, there is a parasite referred to as "OE" that once an infected female Monarch Butterfly lands on the plant and lays her eggs, the parasite's spores then gets on the leaves and the eggs. The caterpillars will consume the leaf, ingesting the parasite and whatever isnt ingested will remain on the leaf.
    The parasite will continue to reproduce on the leaves and spread as more Monarchs come and visit the plant until eventually it gets so bad that the Monarchs' bodies cant handle it and they either die as caterpillars, in their chrysalis, or come out with deformed and crippled bodies and wings. 😔
    So please, if its not native to your area, please avoid it and use ones that are reccomended for where you live. When the native milkweeds die back in the fall and winter, the parasite dies along with it and when they come back from the roots in Spring, the leaves and stems will be fresh and safe for caterpilars to use! 😊
    But nevertheless, great tutorial!! Ive heard about Tropical Milkweed being so easy to propgate which is one of the reasons why its considered to be problematic, but never other milkweeds. Im gonna reccomend this to a friend! 👍

      I live in Florida and a workaround to the Tropical Milkweek parasite issue is to cut the plants to the ground in the fall.
      I have wondered about the giant milkweek species and if it can also host this parasite bevause I would hate to cut these magnificent milkweeds down to nothing.

    I don’t know how true this is, but I’ve been told by people who know a lot more than me that the tropical isn’t great for North America. They said it doesn’t go dormant at the right times and messes up the migration of the monarchs. May be something to look into.

    I apologize for watching your video to late. I just had a quick question... I just did some cuttings like yours with the same plant of milkweed . Can they be immediately watered or should i wait more than a couple days ? And also i live in the Arizona area where right now its very hot. Should i put a shade screen over the 6 one gallon pots or put them in a shaded minimal sun area ?

    • @ThePlantCollector
      @ThePlantCollector  2 роки тому +2

      Hello! Everything you said is right on! You can water as often as you see that the pots are drying out. It is ok to overwater if you have potting mix with good drainage. Main thing is to not let them dry out. I know Arizona tends to get pretty hot so follow your instincts 👍 these shouldnt be too hard to get rooting! Best of luck to you!

    • @ThePlantCollector
      @ThePlantCollector  Рік тому +1

      Yes take off all of the leaves. Place your potted cuttings in indirect sunlight. A shady area that still gets light but not direct sunlight. Also make sure your soil does not dry out or gets too drenched. I would lightly water every two days. Make sure you have a fairly freely draining soil media as well 👍 good luck! Hope this helps!

    Does it need to be hot for this to work? I'm in Florida and last December I made 8 cuttings because we were getting frost. I kept them indoors when frost was an issue but she spent most of their time on a shaded porch in a Florida winter. Most started looking promising, but all died. Is it best to do this in the heat of summer?

    • @ThePlantCollector
      @ThePlantCollector  Рік тому +1

      Yes, I would think this plant needs warmer weather to thrive. I’m not 100% sure but I do know that MY milkweed plants enjoy the warmth of the tropical weather here in Oahu, Hawaii. 🤙 Hope this helps.

    • @Moanabene
      @Moanabene Рік тому +2

      I’m in Florida too. Best to do this in early springtime (after the last possibility of frost has passed) so it has time and warm temps to establish itself through Summer and Fall.

      About 3 weeks ago I made 3 cuttings. One I dusted with rooting hormone and 2 I put in a vase with water/rooting hormone mix. I stuck them in the ground where I wanted them and they've all sprouted and seem like they'll survive.
      Also I had one survivor from my winter cuttings (actually it was from last fall when a hurricane broke off a branch). When I went to plant the pot to the ground, it fell out and barely had any roots. I put it in the ground and it struggled for 2 weeks: it bent over 90° but then it suddenly sprung back to life and is now a nice solid but little plant with 3 main branches.

    i purchased 2 large Giant Milkweed plants and they have been ridiculously finicky about being watered. Took them home, they were BONE DRY ... watered them and 75% of the leaves yellowed and fell off. I'm beyond frustrated.

    • @ThePlantCollector
      @ThePlantCollector  Рік тому +1

      Your milkweed plants may have already been dying before you even watered them. Sometimes its just too late, sorry to hear it. Keep in mind that giant milkweeds do drop all of their leaves seasonally. Then they explode with new growth. They grow very fast.
