Adam, you have to make one, please!! A series of videos making it... And sharing the files... I know there are others, but I would love to see yours, with the same love and accuracy of Grant
I run a small makers' space in the UK. It's tiny at the moment but it's growing with some rapidity, thankfully. However, I'm a bit jealous of the US in only one ridiculously shallow aspect: your maker ladies (I've been to a few conventions in the US, brilliant and very inspiring they were) are mostly very pretty. I'm not just basing my claim on the Mythbusters ladies and this girl here, but from the cons too. All our maker ladies, as lovely as they are (personality counts for MUCH more than looks, I'm just very weak and shallow 😀) are pigs and hounds in comparison, aesthetically speaking. Just an observation from a washed up old welder that occasionally thinks himself mildly artistic.. :) :)
Watching these is like walking into my late father’s workshed for the first time after he passed. Floods of memories. We miss ya, Grant. Rest In Peace.
Being a part of BB8 builders club with Grant was awesome! I haven’t finished mine yet, but it was awesome to see just how dedicated Grant was to the craft and engineering behind it. Rest In Peace friend, and THANK YOU ADAM for highlighting this little joy of a astro droid! Grants build is EPIC!
I'm in the same boat. Still haven't finished mine either. Do you know if there are details about how Grant did the internals? It looks similar to mine.
@@Loqcust Don't quote me on this, but the main difference between the V1 and V2 skeleton is the attachment points for the circle panel cross arches. In the original, the 3D printed arches used screws. In the newer version of the cross arches, the notch is designed into it. though, I might be wrong.
I was at the 501st Legion dinner that night in Anaheim, and Grant was one of the guests. I never did get to talk to him, but we were seated maybe 30 feet apart. The next time I see one of my heroes, I will not shy away for fear of bothering them - instead I will thank them for everything they've done for me and wish them well. He is dearly missed.
Can confirm that building a BB-8 is a ride. Finished mine last year with a custom built drive. Would recommend to anyone interested! Everyone in the club is kind and super helpful! I hope that more builders out there will see Grant's inspirational work and decide to build their own droids.
I love these Grant videos. Because it's hard to say goodbye to some you liked so much but never met. It's almost like these are the communities version of a wake. Thank you both.
Imagine being a young lad or lass in hospital and then BB-8 rolls around the corner. I imagine many minds were blown and the happiness that came from that made their days much better. What a wonderful thing to give, RIP Grant.
I feel like these videos are a great way to remember Grant and his life's work. Not just his accomplishments, but the things he put his soul into. I wish somebody would talk about my various projects at my funeral.
Grant will live forever in the hearts and memories of all who knew him. And all (myself included) that followed his career and his creativity. R.I.P Grant. ❤
Adam, Thank you so much for this series going through your friend's shop. I recently lost one of my best friends to COVID-19 and watching you go through Grant's shop and being reminded of how great a person he was has really helped me process my grief. Keep up all the great stuff you guys do @ TESTED.
Grant was my favorite character on mythbusters when I was a kid. Huge part of my life, thanks for the great times Grant, and the rest of the MB crew of course.
Trying to build a working BB8 seems like both a joy and nightmare. I remember watching James Bruton's process (he's got a great series on his channel), and the end result is wonderful. I love that mantra of "build the best you can, and the iterate." I think we're naturally so inclined to get things perfect the first time that we forget how much we can slow ourselves down in the process.
The world misses Grant. There are a lot of good talented people out there that are willing to pick up the reigns where he left off. Keep the fire burning 🤘
I miss Grant, his enthusiasm and willingness to just go all in on a project was fun to watch. He and the entire Mythbusters team inspired so many young people.
I watch every Grant video that you post, and I will continue to do so. One day, one post... I'll stop crying. If I were religious, I'd console myself with the notion that "God wanted him on the divine team." Instead, I must console myself with these honors--he will not be forgotten. Namaste. Thank you.
I always like seeing Grants build he did a great job. I recognize many of those parts and who designed them 😀. I supplied the blue lens to Grant for the HP part 🙏. Glad I had a small part in his build. Thanks Adam for highlighting this build.
Dangit. I always joked about Grant being my favourite mythbuster because we had the same name, but it's true. I keep remembering that he's gone. RIP to a legend for sure.
Grant was a huge inspiration of mine growing up, seeing UA-cam recommend me things like this pulls my heart because I am reminded of what we lost. Grant might have passed from our world but his vision lives on through everyone's lives he's touched.
A proper talented guy. Who knows what other wonderful things he would have created. So lovely to have this though as a lasting testament to him. RIP grant.
I just found Grant Imahara passed away at 49, so sad to learn. He was always one of my favourite Mythbusters hosts, I loved his passion and that he came across as such a kind and friendly person. May he rest in peace.
Hadn't seen this one before until now. Brought a tear (or 3) to my eyes. I miss Grant. LOVED him on MB and on Robot Wars. Enjoyed so much his enthusiasm and love for his creations. His laughter and his smile brought many smiles to so many people. I can't even imagine what's it is like for those of you that were so very privileged enough to have known him and worked with him. Greg
It's beautiful isn't it. Grant may not be with in body but oh is his spirit alive and kicking in everything he built. We all love his R2 but this BB8 is brilliant. Grant was obviously a special guy with a special talent that he used to its full. Will be missed by all that knew him but also is fans that never met him but love is builds. Another nice vlog on an amazing guys creations.
The first time I saw BB-8 I thought he was a great design. In the film I loved his personality. Absolutely incredible that it was done as a practical model instead of cgi and that fans like Grant have been able to recreate him.
if im tearing up about this. I feel like there were a few cuts while making this. I can only imagine the emotions that were going through Adam. His legacy will live on. You have all had such impacts on everyone who watched that amazing show. Rest in Peace Grant. Even to those who have never met you. The world is truly a brighter place because you were in this world. Thank you. We all love and miss you.
Idk if this is the place, but you know Grant was also a big fan fo Star Trek and now there's a USS Imahara in last week's episode of Disco. It was heartwarming
times 10, hahahahaha! i miss that man, his humor, personality and most of all his heart, so, SO much. i can't watch these without getting a little misty.
I forgot that Grant passed and thought the dude in the thumbnail was him and thought "damn Grant looks different now" , scrolled down to the comments and was devastated for the second time
One of my favorite BB-8 movements is when he's rocking back and forth waiting for Rey to tell him to follow her, like he's bashfully toeing the ground.
As someone who 3D prints and finishes multi-part models.... the amount of pain it would take to not only align but get a flawless finish on this piece is fantastically difficult.
Grant may have been one of the greatest tinkerers of all time! Probably could have shown DaVinci a thing or two... As well as just being a compassionate caring human being. One of the greats!
Boy, this brought back some memories. Grant and I were working together on a Mercury switch operated pneumatic lock that would prevent the head from doing the head sway you would get from a high speed stop too… we never got around to actually prototyping it but I should finished it and call it Grant Switch
The design and mechanics of this came out of the BB-8 Builders Club and it would have been nice to have mentioned that here. Grant did a lot of work on this unit but it was a collaborative effort with that group that came up with the original plans.
Yeah I googled it and 10 seconds in I found working BB-8 projects with this specific system came out already in 2015 (James Bruton) and perhaps even earlier. But any of those that knew Grant only ever saw him work on it solo or were unaware of the full picture, it's unreasonable to expect everybody to instantly know everything :) Nobody is denying that it was a decade (or so) long process worth of absolutely collaborative inter-group effort, but that's not what this video is about :)
Another amazing build of BB-8 was done by James Bruton here on UA-cam. He went much more computer controlled on the movement and made a design that could rotate in place using a mass reaction wheel. Forward and reverse were achieved by shifting the mass of the batteries and having the frame on casters inside the frame. What is interesting is that the solution to holding the head on that he developed looks a lot like the one here in Grant's replica. They also both made use of basic 3d printing to build the body in very similar ways. James has moved away from replica move costumes and robots to developing a walking, quadrupedal robot that is remote controlled, 3d printed, and runs on Arduino controllers, so his channel is more building robots cheaply and creating an Open Source robot design for hobbyists, low cost research, and education. One of the coolest walking robots he made was a Gonk droid replica, but with open panels so you could see the mechanics inside it as it walked.
Would you guys do more of Mr Grants builds? I would love more videos of enthusiast reactions to good builds. I ask these exact questions when exited about learning something new. I love these reviews. Enthusiast reviews shows a passion that is unbridled in my mind. May i email you and ask questions about both sides of the video production and the being on film?
Amazing. I like the design of BB-8. Yet the most inspiring droid for me is D-O. Good to see this video. As I've designed a different style of droids. Have started the mold just waiting for in the new year to order some filament to make it and maybe them. They are roughly based off of fundamental engineering principles, tools, and oddly enough two look like a stylized form of rabbit and the last version looks different(yet still my favorite design, even though I'm not building that one first). The droids even though they look different would all be models that can serve the same functions and purpose. They are basic, yet, then as an item would be more interactive than most other droid toys. Different games could be played with them. Added feature is they would be easier to pick up as compared to other droids and they could pick up items. A new hope would be if they put on a droid contest again.
I almost don't want you guys to stop exploring grants shop. but I am sure there will be a point you will run out of things to talk about. It's bittersweet

Grant got a reference in the latest Star Trek discovery episode, in the form of a Captain Imahara. One of the writers confirmed it was a nod.
