i'm close to 80 yr.s old and have been an athlete and fitness person most of my life. i don't do heavy wts. anymore but i do more functional lifts. i started doing push ups 2 years ago as a main exercise protocol as well as chin ups. i worked up to 200 push ups a day in sets of 30. 40, 50, 60 and 70 over the course of time. now, i do them every other day or so and one of my goals is to do my age(77). i made it to 71 so far. being a competitive masters swimmer i need to be careful with my shoulders. i can tell you that my shoulders and pecs are very strong and defined and the push ups make the difference between my nijpples being around my waist and nearer my clavicles. push ups are a game changer.
Sir you inspire the younger generations
You my friend are a legend
@@quicktingz2097 thank you
@@josuelopez3308 as a teacher and coach for close to 50 years, i'm hoping i did just that. thank you.

I have done 100 pullups a day for 3 months. My body has absolutely improved in every way. This has had the single biggest effect on my physique, more so than anything else I have ever done. Fucking amazing.
Amazing John
That’s fucking baddass man!
Fuck yeah dude!
How's the form?
How do you break them up.
I wanna see this guy on Rogans podcast. Blow this guy up to a bigger audience he deserves twice the following he’s got.

Start doing high frequency pushups and pullups!! Don't wait a day longer
Hi!!!
AlphaDestiny I just bought a pull-up bar I’m going to try this loving the content lately alex
Have you tried band crossover push ups? I found them to give me huge amounts of tension in the chest.
Ive been doing the 50 pushups a day for the past few weeks and its getting easy, would it be a good idea for me to up the volume to 5 sets of 11 from 5 sets of 10??
Zain Daud thanks man
My biggest regret is that i didn't take caliesthics into more importance when i was younger. But doing it now in my 30s, i can do heavy set exercises without failing too early. Also, there's no shame doing pushups from knee position when starting out but once you gain enough strength and confidence, you can do full range. Good luck gym bros, we're all in this together
Honestly strength wise between a man in his early and mid 20s who had never worked out and a man in his early to mid 30s who also has never worked out are roughly about the same in strength some people will disagree with me on that but i am going by what I have seen and honestly its better to start late then never keep up the good work
Edit: idk how old you are exactly so i am gonna say 32 so early 30s haha but honestly your doing it now and there is no reason why you ca t get as physically strong as anyone in there early and mid 20s and because your now older you have more of a mental will to push yourself harder
I started going to the gym last month. I didn't know how to do pushups. For the first two weeks, I've failed miserably doing a push up with the right form, technique along with full range of motion etc. Now, I can do more than 100 pushups in a single day not in a single row. That's a big achievement for me as of now. Within just 3 weeks I've improved a lot. I'm sure one day I might be able to do 1000 pushups in a single day. Not a joke. It's absolutely possible. I'm still going to learn pull ups + chin ups. Practice makes perfect.
@@viralshorts323how you started doing 1000 yet I'm at 1000 every other day I'm 30 started a month and a half ago stopped working out for like a year literally .. broken ankle and got lazy I never want to loose my strength again

Josh Tanzo have been doing this for almost half a year now and dude endless results ( I’m trying to put on weight have been eating like 2500-3k calories daily ) made it from 165-173

I really like the captions and how you emphasize particular points in general on your channel. Thoughtful and comprehensive.
I did 100s of pushups and pullups when I was younger (late teens to late twenties) and I was obviously strong as hell and in the best shape. After I stopped doing that and focused only on weights, things went downhill... I guess I will go back to the high frequency pushups and pullups then. Thanks Alpha
This is what happened to me too smh. Had to get back to the roots.
@@joshuaolmedaful one of the biggest things I've figured out recently was that, my first year of calisthenics only, I gained 3lbs of muscle and I was so ecstatic about it. I thought I was ready to get into weight training and did all the research. Just finishing my year of weight training and longer workouts everyday.. I only gained an extra pound and a half.. I believe I barely scratched my noob gains and should have just kept progressing with Calisthenics. I wish I could trade the past year for another year of calisthenics
@@tackywacky99 should eat more if you only gained 3 pounds. Should gain at least 10 pounds in first year.
@@allthingsfitness3957 no that's not correct. Lean muscle mass, most people even with great genetics are only gaining 6. Im a small guy and my genetics are sub par. 3 is already great. 5% of my body fat is 3lbs. I've never weighed more than 140
@@tackywacky99 you can look at charts or even consult with an expert if you don’t believe me. The average dude gains around 12-15lbs of muscle per year. Second year it’s about 8-10 pounds and third year it’s about 5-8 pounds. If you have the shittiest of the shit genetics you should still be able to gain a minimum of 8-10 pounds of muscle in your first year. I’ve gained around 7-8lbs in the last 4 or 5 months while getting more vascular and maintaining the same waist size. This number could be inflated though because I am only 14 years old and puberty probably helps. Though I haven’t grown any taller I don’t think. Anyways the point is you should be able to gain 10 pounds in your first year of training
Pull ups every day constantly in the marine corps added more to my lat development than ANYTHING else even with eating a sub par diet and sleeping 4 - 5 hours a night.
Overhand or under? I'm in the Corp as well.
Semper Fidelis.
@@justanalt4641 imo, it doesnt matter which you do. The answer is just do it, maybe you can even mix both. Both are great, but pull ups are better for me because chins ups put the shoulder in a weird position for me
How many did you do?
Vedremo when I started working out in HS I was pushing 8 or 9 with kipping and momentum. Post boot camp pushing 20 with straight legs and strict movement. Now I do 23-25, take into account I was 155 ish in boot and am 170 now, so while the reps only went up a few, my weight gain on top of that made my back much thicker. If you can do 20+ pull ups at 170+ pounds assuming you’re under 6ft tall, you’ll be in damn decent shape. IMO
Nucleus overloard
Probably one of the best videos I’ve ever watched. Thanks!
When I was deployed, we had a pull-up/chin-up bar outside my office. My rule was if I walked past it, I had to do at least 4 pulll-ups or chin-ups. In my short deployment, my back gained a lot of mass and I lost weight. Course, I was not drinking, and I was eating minimal .
By the sounds of it, you were eating just the right amount to replace what you burnt and ate enough protein for you to have such gains, not an easy balance to find good job mate
@@bluehornet197 The military is really good at doing JUST ENOUGH for its employees.
😂😂
My experience is that pull-ups and push-ups can support eachother. Doing only one of those movements doesn't have much of a carryover to the other. However, when I have a plateau in pull-ups, focusing on push-ups more for a while has often helped me keep progressing in pull-ups.
I lost a gym membership and have been doing these and other calisthenics exercises and I've actually gotten stronger not lifting any weights. My back muscles pop like never before. You're definitely onto something
I'm a truck driver and can't get to the gym. So I installed a pull-up bar in my truck and I do push-ups too. I go in spurts but when I do I do about 60 pull ups and 400 push-ups a day. I've been doing this for years. I'm not huge but I'm in good shape. I'm 48 yrs old, 5' 10", 165-170 lbs. I have 14.5 inch arms, 43" chest, 32" waist and I'm pound for pound strong as f'ck. The best thing is that although it takes a lot of hard work and a lot of time to build muscle this way but it takes less to maintain and even longer to lose if you stop for awhile. I'm always in great shape either way.
Btw..great video and even better commentary. You look great bud, keep it up.
That’s awesome! Props to you.
I will start as a truck driver soon. And also gonna install pull up bar + gonna do rope skipping for a hell cardio. Greetings bro!

Very good info man!
Amen! I've been doing calisthenics exclusively for a couple months and it's like being a noob again. I even got some gymnastics rings and they have humbled me like no other. Even very basic movements are very challenging, but they work sooooo many muscles at once that your workouts are very efficient. I especially all of the ring turned out (RTO) movements, they work you chest, core, lats and biceps like no other. Still working on building up my pull-ups, but I've found looping a light resistance band around a weight on the floor is a great way to add resistance if you don't have a weight belt.
Happy New Year!
kfa4303 I love rings. Been doing weighted ring dips for a while and haven’t used bars for dips ever since.
@@SIIKAP1 Damn! Weighted ring dips are no joke. I can only just now get 2-3 ugly dips, but I couldn't even do one two weeks ago, so I guess I'm making progress. Best part of rings is that you can hit so many muscles at once. You can pretty much just to ring push ups, pull ups, dips and some sort of leg exercise (I've been working on pistol squats) and you're pretty much good to go. I also do some random accessory work, but those 4 exercises make up the bulk of my routine.
kfa4303 yeah bro hang in there, strength comes quick with these. At first I could do about 10-14 with body weight in spring. Now can attach 105 pounds and do 8-10 reps on the rings!
You’re right, you can do so many different things with these. Hanging rows and one arm rows with feet on ground are pretty fun. And of course one arm pull-up training once you’re ready for that! Keep it up and enjoy!
@@SIIKAP1 That's muy impressive. I'll be stoked if I can get 10 honest deep dips and a proper muscle up :)
A great workout routine that implements this concept is the Armstrong Pull up program... lots of push-ups and pull-ups.
It’s used to help Marines increase their pull ups and can be used in conjunction with gym work.
Fighter pull up program is also a great GTG workout.
Another great video goodshit! Also get on you for making sure that you answer as many questions as you can respect
Thanks for inspiring others like myself bro!!! Keep it up!!!
I'm 50 years old, 225lbs 5'10". I lift twice a week. Run 1 miles twice/week sprint intervals. And this month (since july 1) added 200 pushups per day. I do all 200 in a span of 20-30 minutes or mix sets of 15-25 reps between lifts on lift days. Doing 200 pushups has actually helped my hurt shoulder. The key is not to cheat on the pushups. All the way down all, the way up, at a slow to moderate cadence. Next month I will be adding pull-ups and situps to the pushup routine and maybe daily body squats/jumps. Also make sure every shower is a cold shower (no hot/warm at all) its definitely helps with recovery. Been doing the cold showers for 4 months now.
My right shoulder has been hurting as well from benching and i started putting ice on it and it helped a lot
I love to hear cold showers. I’ve been doing straight cold showers for the past 3 and half years. 👏 keep it up
I'm at 15 chinups a day. Yes 15. Doing this outside of the gym I can already feel the strength increasing, I more than doubled my weekly volume with that. Wish I learned this earlier, been plateauing on chins for months..
QUALITY not QTY
How are you doing now?
I'm so glad I just now stumbled upon this right before I go to bed I'm going to wake up Monday and started in on this program to supplement with my workout routine I've already been kind of doing this but now I'm going to go full blast of course not failing
I commented on your IG earlier. I’m doing nucleus overload with arms and back with hammer curls everyday and tricep extensions everyday and pull ups everyday 200 reps. I’m doing it for 6 months. I did this once with delts side laterals everyday for 6 months 100 reps each side 15-20 lb dumbbells. I’m super surprised people don’t do this. I highly recommend this style of training bro. Good video always my G
How much did your delts grow? I did 50 tricep extensions and bodyweight curls for 2 weeks then rested a week because of an injury and my wrists were making noises whenever i do the exercises. Did that again for 2 weeks and stopped doing them two days ago. I got 1/2 inch growth in my arms. I was cutting during both times. Now i started doing 40 pushups and 40 inverted rows 6x a week and will increase 10 reps every week. Do your exercises while squeezing the shit out of your muscles. You will quickly fatigue your muscles and get a better pump.
ebony black I have a video on my channel about it bro check it out
This was a cool video to stumble onto because I just started doing this to supplement my workouts and was wondering what impact it would have.
Alpha you have no idea how impeccable the timing of this was I do 5 workouts a week and I wanted to start training pushups and pullups to train for the Navy Seal Fitness test and I was wondering will this hurt my training. You couldn't imagine how helpful this is.
I'm super happy this was helpful!
Practical and useful information. Good job. Thanks.
Man!!! These calisthenics exercises are awesome for building that powerful physique and a more balanced lifestyle. Thank you for your advice from this video. It helped me a lot.😉
This really helps, it increased my max pull ups by 4 in 3 weeks (12-16)
When I was in 5th grade I wanted to be a navy SEAL so I started doing pushups again. My dad had me doing pushups when I was really young and when I was in 3rd grade I could do 50 clean pushups in one go. Because of this I could do really high volume and I would do 200 pushups in the morning, 50 after school, and another 150 at night. I did this for probably 4 or 5 months and to this day my chest is very developed. Even before I started lifting last year people commented on my chest. Same with my upper back, I think because I did wide and deep pushups my back got a contraction and then I would lockout when I came up. I believe this is why my last and upper back was quite developed before I started lifting too. I highly recommend high rep pushups.
That's amazing bro, sounds like you experienced nucleus overload
Consistency is your secret
Your delivery sometimes is so tongue in cheek. I laughed so much at the intro.
Perfect video brother been doing this for a while now with a one day full body / then push pull twice a week little bit of calisthenics in between and just eating everything lol have put on 13 pounds in this recent year hoping to learn more from you and keep the gain train going your a beast 💪🏻🙌🏻
That duck noise
Since gyms are closed due to the corona virus, I've tried pushups till failure to try to prevent muscle loss. I did 52 in one set. I guess I can do around 13 dead hang pullups with perfect form so I'm gonna do it later in the day. Your channel truly helps in all scenarios.
Almost 3 weeks later I did over 63 pushups in a single set. Just bought dip bars at home and purchased a pullup bar.
I've been doing this for over a decade. When I have the energy and remember how beneficial this is, I always am reminded I cannot stop this routine. My range was very minimal volume, simply 50 push-ups in 2 sets and 25 pull-ups in 2 sets.
Amazing bro
With solid form even your "minimal" volume is still likely supreme to the countless number of people I see performing these movements with piss poor techique.
This guy knows his stuff. Working on my trap game thanks to Alex. Greetings from Cali
I did it last year with pushups when I was new to calisthenics. I did 5 sets of variations for like 8 months. It’s amazing. I encourage you guys to do it with any pull+push excrecise so you don’t have weak links. Good luck!!
Used to do 200 push ups , 100 pull ups , 100 squats , 100 band curls/triceps extensions , 100 band lateral raises every morning before breakfast and doing two lifting sessions per week my gains were really on fire
I did all of that but instead of 2 lifting sessions, I would do 2 days of regular cardio and 3 days of HIIT cardio. That works well too
PPV PLUG so every day push ups/pull ups/squats + 5 days of cardio and you’ve seen gainzzz?🔥
Giac Bejo yeah cause I was fat, I weighed 215, and followed a strict routine for 3 months and went to 175lbs.
that's really dumb cos u aint going to be doing that for the rest of ur life
aka: Temporary gains
@@dotdotdot7440 You can do it for the rest of your life because your recovery is through the roof....you recover extremely fast from that type of training (unlike gym rats that do bro splits... *cough*).
Likewise you can do the exact same thing with body weight squats. Add a bunch of variations like pausing at the bottom, changing foot stance, changing reps and sets, and I’m sure you’ll make great leg gains as well.
Thank you for this bro!
This is a very useful video for me, it is nice and specific. Thank you, I will now implement this.
2018 -> 100 decline pushups/day + 20 pull-ups/day

Could you do a flow chart of what aspects to look into for novices experiencing troubles? Like if you're not seeing gains over this amount of and are constantly sore, make sure that your program is a real one that is not too long, you are eating enough calories, and youre sleeping enough. And so on with common issues youve heard about with simple solutions.
When I was like 11 I started doing 30 pushups every night (one set), increased it to 40 in like 2 weeks, then 50 after another few weeks, repeat until I could do a set of like 70-80 every night. I did this every night for like 3 years until I started lifting weights and I can confirm how much it helps. Nucleus overload led to significant chest growth and upper body strength. I wanna start incorporating this again, so maybe I’ll do a max set of 85% of my true max set on my off days, or so sets of 20 because it seriously is great. Thanks for making this, reminded me to start doing them again!
Pushups are NOT a gateway to weights. They are my go-to exercise for chest. Nothing else needed.
@@BikeHikeLikeMikeAs long as you’re progressively overloading with weighted variations, then yeah. It got to a point for me where doing more reps only got me good at doing more reps
I started when i was 11 as well 10x10 pushups then started adding pullups. i worked up to 20 pullups when I was 15. I dropped pushups but im gonna re add them
How do you know it helped if you hadn’t lifted weights before?
Yup this really helps with muscular imbalances and stiff movements due to bodybuilding.
Excellent video very motivating. Thanks

BRUH YOUR BACK IS AMAZING
This is going to be my approach for the front lever, planche and 1 arm handstand training! High fkng frequency!
Great vid Alex. I lifted weights for years and recently started pullups and dips and have noticed a difference in upper body development. I am curious as to how many pull ups you can do without stopping. I am sure it's a high number.
I’ve done this actually! I’m a former HS wrestler, so you (Alex) know more about that type of work ethic than anyone on UA-cam Fitness! Only thing I did differently was I would do 500 Pull-ups & 1000 push-ups a week. I would break those up totals either daily or would separate the pushups on one day & pull-ups on another throughout the week.
For example, for pushups:
- 200 in a morning on wrestling practice, 200 after for 2 days & 100 in the morning & 100 at night for one day.
& pull-ups were structured the same way, but the numbers were divided by 2 because the amount was half of the push-up total. I would do these on days I wasn’t running pushups.
Would love to know what you think of this! I was also doing partial reps because my main goal at the time was building up muscular endurance 👍🏼
P.S. Alex, I would love to hear your point of view on a warrior’s (the archetype) need to express himself! I’m very curious as why such a strong spirited male such as myself & many of your viewers find the need to paint, create music etc. is it because their warrior side is so strong that the opposite is equally as strong? IE: the taller a person, the bigger the shadow? I find myself as a young man equally talented at creating music and fitness. However, I find many people that are into fitness also are into music, so I wonder is my true calling a fitness person rather than a creative? Would love to hear! I know you’re not a yo Elliot channel but your insight is what I respect the most about you. Cheers.
How the hell would Alex know what your true calling is? I would say he is pretty young and inexperienced, just like myself( I believe we are the same age). The best way to find out is to try it for yourself and see if it works. And don't over think things.
Excellent videos . I like your 1000 rep push up workout you put out. Always good to get new ideas . I’ve always done push ups and pull ups . You should try the Royal Marine push up pull up sit up system . They have on the sound videos on you tube . You’ll see the difference in doing fast rep and cadence push ups . Your muscles will be tested
Great advice boss
I agree with this, I started 20 sets of 25 push ups yesterday that I want to try and do until I die. We will see how it goes lol
I do this at work a couple times a week with bodyweight. Usually at a preset time. Will do 50 push ups followed by 20 chins. Average around 500 push ups n 200 chins or so
this is my new favorite chan for lifting
I totally agree greasing the groove is the best way to build muscle and strength without fatigue accumulation and it's allow you to handle more volume and intensity
Started doing pull ups throughout the day on the weekend, also going to add them in first thing every day (couple sets) after getting up and another few sets before bed.
This sounds like the PLP approach almost, might through in high frequency body weight squats as well.
Would you reccomend this on rest days between a 3 day full body workout?
That's a good way to do it, be mindful of recovery though
Thank you for this video, I appreciate it 🤘
You got it right on this on mr destiny it will work well If you had a weighted vest probably slightly better the pushups is little of a light load
you can do this with decline pushups if your upper chest is flat af, right?
Can a similar routine be done with leg exercises as well? Especially since the legs can endure higher volume compared to the upper body.
Late response but yes. Definitely yes. Leg work is so incredibly important for overall health and a balanced physique.
Besides other workouts , i also started grease the groove 2 month ago, 3 sets of 5 reps , spaced through the day , 5 days a week: 8 continuous exercises , pull-ups/pike push-ups/bridge push-up/L-sit then 4 flexibility exercises for the legs/shoulders/hip flexors as you can see im tackling many things at same time, prepared to see slower progress but on a wider spectrum, also the reps are super slow and with full mind into it. Tailor "gtg" to what you want and need.
Ive already been doing this, Alpha you are correct!
"Do a set of pushups!" Ok, I`m sold. Thanks for the advice.
Been doing these for about 6 weeks and I can still bench 315 any day of the week easy. I try to do push ups and pull ups at least 3 Times a week sometimes switch it out for dips and chin ups. The prisoner guys had it right all along
Hell yeah bro
your a strong dude well done!
Just for shoulder health in general ive been doing 100 pushups and 200 band pullaparts a day spread out over the day. Has worked wonders. Would love to have a pull up bar around to do pullups as i suck at them but being a throwing athlete im happy with pullaparts as a health benefit. High frequency stuff like this really does great stuff or injury prevention if you (as you say) dont be stupid and go to failure.
Lift weights is the only way i can regulate my emotios when i feel a lot of angry, hate and a many negative shit idk what is wrong with me but hard workouts definitely help

I understand ya bro I was there once too. Shit job, broke, no purpose, going to the gym and just giving it everything I had. There's more to life man, one day everything will be alright. Stay positive
Feel like that always recently. Lifting is the only thing that makes me truly happy
@@SamGhareeba hunting ass? That's what dumbasses who live paycheck to paycheck do. When you make good money and work on yourself, women will come to you. Focus on getting your prioritys straight my guy.
High testosterone and high estrogen
I used to do this for pushups and my pecs blew up disproportionately to the rest of my body. People would be impressed and ask me how much I bench well before I even touched a weight. Don't underestimate the benefits of pushups. They do wonders for the body if done regularly.
@Greg Pettis I don't listen to anything that arrogant fake merc has to say lmao
@Greg Pettis He should start doing them
Agree 100% do these as a supplement along with your workouts. If you add some body weight squats with those 2, it benefits greatly
Absolutely, this is implamented in my everyday workout...😁👍🏿
I have actually quite recently started doing push ups every day, usually around four sets of fifty spread out during the day. I started around two weeks ago, and I've seen tremendous increases in strength.
Good stuff Joel
Hell yeah! Hardgainer here, chest, especially mid and upper, lats, rhomboids, serratus, all that shit only started growing after doing push-pull 4 times a week. Still get sore every time I bang em out with short breaks. Mind you, it's been almost 10 years of bro-split which only gave me big arms and overall thickness, but actually I looked so flat. And with push-pull, even with only a slight caloric surplus and they adapt. I started this workout because I would exercise in the park in front of my building, where there's only a pull-up bar and dip bars, but this shit triggers growth hormone like you wouldn't believe. You end up looking like an MMA fighter on juice. Not to mention the symmetry.
This gonna be my 2020 goal but I'm starting from today itself, headstarts are always better
I always see you pull-up to the chest instead of the chin. Well done 🔥
Upper back crazy
I actually tried this once. I read a book about Jack Dempsey and he did workouts including running, lifting weights and sparring every day. I thought well if he was able to recover with daily work maybe I can. I also thought about construction workers and people with physical jobs and how their strength generally benefits. At the same time I've had experiences where I've found lifting less often or less intensely helped my strength. So I tried to balance both approaches by doing one set of pull ups and one set of push ups daily, then full strength training workouts 2 times a week. It worked well for me. I'd say i was more muscular than ever before or since.
SKOOKM yeah I work in a manufacturing warehouse pulling orders, usually includes heavy steel coils and stuff. Not fun after a heavy lifting day lmao
Jack Dempsey is a legend 👊🏼
i know this already but your video hit the spot for me.
Thanks for the reminder!
Exactly what i needed!
*walking to the pu-bar*
I was already trying to do 100 push ups a day along with all the weight training I was doing. Don't really know why I started but it just felt right.
I will have to implement the pull ups into now. Thanks for the advice
