    Doing squad lead from time to time have helped me cope with my social anxiety. It's very stressful at first, but eventually I got used to it. I still get crazy nervous from time to time, but it's better than staying nervous all the time. Moreover, it also helped me become a more confident leader in group projects irl.

    Another big part is the fear of being judged. Squad is a hard game and necessitates a minimum level of soft skills and extravertion. New SLs should understand that most people in Squad are willing to help if they're told you're new and/or need tips.

      I had that same fear of being judged even when I wasn’t an SL. Until I realised that nobody ever pays attention to individual players, and unless what you are doing is completely trolling it’s not bad to play bad

      @@thebulletkin8393 so there's essential roles that require some skill like AT and everyone's going to notice if you miss an easy shot. Best is to follow some videos about how to aim with the different launchers and take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with them in the shooting range. Everything goes the same way.. tossing a proper underhand nade, amoracking a tank etc etc. So one of your best tools is training. The other one is simply asking in game when you're not sure, you'll always find someone willing to help

    Some tips from my 500 hours as SL-
    Part of being a great SL is listening to advice from your non coms (your FTLs), when someone says (I think we should go over here and do this) and it goes against what you're saying, don't admonish them, award them.
    Say "great idea, take FTL and these 3 guys and go do that, we'll support you once we cap this objective"
    They've got the guts to speak up, chances are they'll make great section leaders and be able to lead your entire squad on the ground while you're communicating with other squads.
    Another tip - the rest of your squad doesn't get to hear what the other squads are reporting. If you hear "tank at G3 moving east" on command comms, let your squad know, if you've got a HAT or LAT handy, you can even check your map and task them to go disable it.
    That leads me to my last tip - map awareness. As an SL, you should be hotkeying that map often with new information you get and that others get. If you see that a LAV has just gone down near your objective, contact that squad on command comms and say "hey guys what took you out?" or maybe they're just disabled, in which case you can say "Hey squad 3, hang tight, Squad 9 is on the way to support you. Stay inside, we'll clear it up for you."
    Actually, maybe one more tip. Be a lad to other squads, especially armor squads. When you chuck that first fob down, put a repair station somewhere and then get on Command Chat to all and say "all armor squads, be advised, repair station at G8 FOB, let us know if you need more supplies".
    Those armor squads will love you and in return, when you're getting smacked by a BTR, they're a lot more likely to come to your rescue.

      Yeah an underrated behaviour is kindness and solidarity. Even if you loose a game, it always feels great when you know that other squads are grateful for the efforts you put in for them. It's even better when you win and you're labbeled MVP by others :D

    Great points Gor. Additionally, some things that have done me wonders in my many many hours of SLing is:
    1. UTILIZE YOURE FRIGGEN TEAMLEADERS. At the beginning of your round ask who wants to be a team leader/who will actually mark what they see. You have ability to cut the time youre spending looking at a map by 2/3's because they can mark enemy armor and infantry for you. Rather then hearing "theyre to my 237" or "by that greenish bush" its just "enemy squad on bravo observe" that everyone can reference.
    2. To let everyone know what the initial game plan looks like at the beginning of the round and let everyone know their role within that plan so there is plenty of time for people to ask questions or clarify or re-evaluate. (If you've got 3 guys who are playing for the first time maybe dont go for the overly aggressive play you were initially wanting to make.) "We're going to head over to my move mark to try to cut the enemy's advancement off to buy time for our team to contest the mid point easily. Rockets I want you watching the roads, Machine gunners look at windows/alleyways, ect." And if youre feeling spicy include a plan B. "If we cant keep our foothold we will regroup at X location" and figure your life out then. When I join other squads its often that we leave main without being told what we're doing or its just a simple "we're heading to radio tower." Giving your guys tasks plays into the active communication Gor mentioned in the video which was a great tip and doing so will make people stick together or maneuver with a purpose other than wanting to shoot people.
    3. If you see someone running off call them out by alias. "Hey Gorlami come back, I need you over here goober." Rarely (and I mean like 95% of the time) once you call someone by name they will listen where as if you just say "you guys" its more common for people to keep on running away

    • @yamyeeter1185
      @yamyeeter1185 2 роки тому

      @Zan Zovkic bruh what? You said first 2 points are wrong, I understand you can get by without fireteam leads, but you cant seriously be saying that having a PLAN as the squad leader is a bad thing lol? So what if the plan fails, it's better than no plan at all. As long as the plan isnt bafflingly stupid, I feel most people would rather attempt a plan and fail, over doing nothing at all. I mean, that's like the whole role of SL, you plan and direct the squad. If people think they have better plans, they are more than welcome to make a squad themselves. As for the usage of peoples aliases, it is absolutely more effective to call people out my name. As long as you are clear and concise people will respond. You may need to ask twice, since the game can get pretty loud and distracting, but people almost always respond.

  • @frazzle6713

    I would definitely agree with you on this, one thing I've found is because I'm quite young I get criticised because of my squeaky voice, and being told stuff like "oh your not even old enough to play this game" and shit like that, one thing I would recommend for new SL is to ignore what people think of you and take advice from people willing to help, the squad community can be pretty toxic, but it can equally be very welcoming.

    It was just me and him; he used movement commands to tell me where to drive. We ended up never getting the tank damaged, got around 45 kills and helped our team win the game.
    We ended up having to go to a repair station twice just for ammo lol

    I heard the chieftan say this about real life but I think it applies to squad:
    "A bad decision now is better than no decision or a good decision too late"
    It's a trial and error process to learn how to SL well depending on gamemode/layer. If you don't make a decision, your squadies will. (And maybe they will make the good decision, listen to your guys and they will listen to you)

    This is a great vid, very good tips! The mental and social aspects of SLing are arguably the most important. One thing I'd add is the importance of delivery. Think before you speak and be conscious of your tone. Often you are leading strangers and first impressions matter. People react far more positively when you sound confident and speak with purpose. Dont mumble, speak softly, or sound defeated as that can really hurt squad morale. Offer words of encouragement when stuff goes wrong and stay optimistic even though you may be frustrated or tired. Tbh, squad cohesion is ultimately what everyone is after, win or lose the match, as long as you had a good squad and morale was high, it feels like a positive experience. As SL you have a massive influence on squad cohesion and morale and learning ways to improve and cultivate them, is one of the many challenges and Discoverys of SLing.

    Thanks for creating this video so much great tips. Especially with communication, I don’t care how new you are to SL but if your willing to talk and listen then I will help you out no matter what. I would add two other tips 1) listen to what your squad is saying, can be helpful and they have eyes on something that you don’t thereby giving you situation awareness 2) Assign FTL’s at the beginning right away. Those guys that want it often can lead but don’t want to lead an entire squad so they have the ability to broaden your situational awareness

    A slightly weird tip for SLs: if you like strategy games, play some military RTS's like Steel Division. Kinda reminds you of that headspace you need to be in as an SL- Your not an individual soldier, but 1 infantry unit in a battle with other infantry and armored units, on a big map. Gets you thinking as a unit instead of an individual.

    There is such a charismatic and mem generating player named "Major1101" in the Russian segment of Squad. He always plays as SL and starts playing quite sober. But then he starts using alcohol to fight SL mental stress +). When you join his squad you can always judge for how long he already plays based on his diction. =D And then at some point he suddenly goes AFK, which means he has finally fallen under the table and is sleeping.

    Just today I had a game where I played Marksman and the SL said he knows people give Marksman's shit for splitting up but he doesn't care where I go as long as I am supporting the team. I instantly had a lot of respect for him. The only time I left was towards the end of the game when the 2 fireteams were split and my fireteam had split again so I went to a town with a couple of infantry pings and ended up killing 5 guys, linking with command, killing 10 or so more, discovering and getting mortar fire to a critical enemy fob, and then died and went back to kill 5 more before the game ended. So I would say I still supported the team.

    5:00 I'll say this from someone who recently started developing my SL skills. As a general rule of thumb when starting keep your communication brief but specific. Less is more. The longer you spend explaining something the harder its going to be for someone to understand when they have bullets flying past them. Don't be afraid to tell people when chat is getting too clustered or if you are having a hard time understanding something. If its hard for you to understand someone or its getting too clustered and you guys are losing communication because of it then bring attention to it. I would rather someone tell me they are having a hard time following than sit there in silent anxiety while trying to decipher 6 different conversations.

    I agree with a lot of what you said, except for the beginning of a round. I think getting to a good central area on your side of the map is very important. Enemies love to rush your side of the map in order to surprise you from behind or bum rush a point to try and stop the back caps.

    1st my biggest *UNSOLVED* issue is the ability to make my squad mates keep up the same pace as mine. Ive become very comfortable with the role so more often than not, i dont stop moving while squad leading. But i see many times my team failing to keep up, which disrupts my timing to place rallies, take down habs and set up friendly ones. So far i haven't figured a way to solve this.
    2nd positive reassurance is a hell yeah for me. Even if they dont respond, its a good way to show other squad mates that you care. But also pair this with a strict attitude towards lone wolfs and disrespectful squad mates. This ensures that you cant be messed with.

    • @Gorlami14
      @Gorlami14  2 роки тому +1

      I get what you're saying. Whenever I'm playing with my community members, I always have people doing exactly what I want without me having to ask. Its tough when you don't have that synergy, but I think you could solve a lot of your problems by just communicating your movements. Like "Alright we're all going to get to the south side niva lower, once the last member has caught up, we're immediately moving north through the town and stopping here (place move mark.) Hearing my SL say that, there's zero chance I can confuse their intent and I know where I need to get to.

    For me, SL in hell let loose felt alright.
    But in Squad I can't be bothered.
    It's not the stress of it, it's the community.
    There is something about seeing a squad empty itself as you kick the idiot blasting music on local mic during a fight, those not maintaining cohesion being in a corner building a super fob and the one not following basic instructions after 5 mins.
    The reality is that, on average, after "the kicking phase", there is no one left.

    These tips are just off the top of me head without watching the video since i’m in class with no ear buds.
    Tip 1. Never say ur age unless directly asked. Me being 16 gives the old guys a weird power trip and won’t listen for shit since i’m younger.
    Tip 2. Be social. These guys will be strangers at the start of the game and feel like best friend by the end if you socialize right.
    Tip 3. Is just accept that ur a silly war gamer nerd and don’t take it seriously. After all this is a game so make sure to have fun. When i squad lead i always make sure having fun is the main priority, win or lose. A shitty game can be turned to one that makes u go to bed with a smile on your face.
    Tip 4. Don’t be afraid to kick toxic players. If they don’t wanna listen then kick them. If they don’t wanna be respectful then kick them. But make sure not to abuse the kick feature you have as squad leader.
    Tip 5. Your attitude is gonna be the squads attitude. If you are grumpy and angry at how shit the match is going then so will your squad. Make sure to stay positive cuz in the end you can always re spawn. this isn’t life or death even tho sometime it may feel so.
    Here is a list of SQUAD tactics. NOT IRL. for anyone interested.
    yes some of these tactics may be irl tactics but most are based of the flow of squad not real people with real places and real politics.
    1. That logi is ur life. Logistics in the game is the number 1 factor in winning an objective. You don’t have to get more kills than the enemy team to win. Make sure after every objective you don’t take more than 30 seconds getting to next objective(if ur an attacking squad).
    2 Spacing. If an enemy vic with he rounds comes out of no where and you are too close to one another you’ll take 2 tickets and above for one he round. you may not be able to avoid casualties so maximize the amount of ammo wasted by the vic to make the next squads job easier. also you just don’t want one base to kill ur medic, gunner, and a random soul all at once.
    3 awareness. Keep ur map open 90% of the time. The battle is unfolding right in ur back pocket so make sure to utilize that advantage you have over SL’s who don’t have much awareness.
    4. make sure you accept that you’ll lose guys and everything won’t go ur way. the best way to counter this is to make sure you trade ticket for ticket. 1ticket=1inf life. If you get in an engagement with a squad make sure you at least trade with each other, other than one deciding guy from each squad who would have to either go positive or negative on kd. So if your squad gets wiped make sure to try and see how much you costed you team. Maybe you just wiped 20+ inf and destroyed a vic. That’s 25+ tickets right there. Subtract that by ur casualties and you either profit or get shit on.
    5 Communication, if any of you ever had a girlfriend by any chance you’d understand how important communication is. You wanna get some coochie? communicate. You wanna win ur squad match while ur wife is upstairs getting railed by someone else since you don’t give her nothin no more. communicate! Call out enemies, remind ur squad of kill zones and bad positions, remind them of the obj and how important it is at that moment.
    alright well that was my quick guide while o was bored in class. I got way off track but i hope i helped anyone 😭

    The main thing keeping me from SL’ing regularly is that it’s just exhausting being the only one building HABs in most games. It feels like if I’m not spending my whole game focusing building spawns, my team will set up one attack HAB and just bleed tickets away on a failing offense. In games where other SL’s build HABs, it usually a fun game whether win or lose.

    • @Gorlami14

      Yeah I feel you on that one. I've played full invasion games that lasted 1.5 hours and no other squads put down a single fob. Its frustrating, but if you want to win, its a sacrifice you have to make sometimes.

    • @ApacheNL1
      @ApacheNL1 2 роки тому

      I know what you feel and I changed my attitude. It is not your responsibility to carry the whole team. Everyone has their part to do. If you are on attack and defenders aren't doing their job in building habs, tell them in command chat, maybe put a fob creation mark somewhere, But don't do what they are supposed to do themselves. This doesn't work long term in real life and it doesn't work in squad. If the team loses, tell 'em again they must build more habs til they get the message.

    I played this for about a month and I found that people join a squad and want to listen. So be confident and if you have questions. Ask other SL’s or your squad, chances are one of them has played SL before.

    I have zero respect for SLs who bail mid match! Like a kid who throws the board game when they are loosing! I'd rather loose with a good (or even bad!) SL over that mid game scramble!
    Great vid thanks! :D
    3:41 - It would be great to see a video about commanding. Even if people don't want to try it I think it would be helpful to see things like UAV and artillery from that perspective (kind of like how knowing how the diff kits work can help your overall play)

    For gaming laptop players sl is a bit difficult only because if you don’t have an external keyboard, most likely no num pad. I decided to just use my f3-12 keys I believe so I can still switch to gunner and driver in a vehicle, it’s extremely annoying this way though because if you are driving in anything that isn’t full, you are forced to hop out of the drivers seat to use direct comms

    As a newer player, it would be very helpful if on tutorials if you could not just mention what to do but also the keys on the keyboard to accomplish that. Personally, that's what holds me up the most. Great videos by the way.

      I hope to be a good SL one day or whenever I get an actual mic you could say, currently I cant talk through my headset due to me messing up my PC build or I just got a bugged PC part or something along the lines of this. Either way though when Im able to verbally respond to people I hope ill be a GOOD SL. Mainly because I understand the tactics of squad but in the end, I cant talk so its not worth even trying to command a squad which I don’t blame them an SL should always have a mic.

    Try not to reload so often, you seem to have an inventory full of half empty mags in a lot of your background clips.

    • @Gorlami14
      @Gorlami14  2 роки тому +1

      That's how I was trained IRL. If I just was in an engagement and used half a mag and now we're in a lull in the fighting, I'm not going to keep that half-full mag in my weapon when I have time right then to change it out. You're far better off reloading while out of contact and in cover than in the middle of a fight.

    • @GIR9595
      @GIR9595 2 роки тому

      @@Gorlami14 True, just leaves you with nothing but half mags if you do it every single time is the problem in game at least. I try to only reload when I know i'll need a full mag or if my mag is exceptionally low. Thankfully the game tells you so I just check before moving out of cover instead of doing it every time. Saves you running out of ammo every time you fight once you have nothing but half empty mags. I guess it just depends on the situation.
