When I bought my car almost 10 years ago, someone left a Decemberist CD in the CD player. This was the first song that played. I sold that car recently and I miss it dearly. When I hear this song, I think of the time I first test drove that car.
I just graduated from college. This song strangely makes me feel accomplished. Ear to ear grin. And that tan Saturn parked outside the school brings back good memories.
First time watching this video. I appreciate the humor, but this song always left me feeling sadly unsettled. I was a military wife with a husband deployed to Iraq.
A very very good and light-hearted vid. thinking of the implications of the actual song even nowaydays makes me a little scared and nervous recently lol. "Cause America can't say no"
saw this vid when it first came out and just recently thought, man i haven't seen that in a minute... a timeless piece of political commentary (and a great song!)
Is that a Sing the Sorrow avatar? I love love love that album so much! When are AFI going to make more new music? Anyway I'd call the Decemberists a mix of alt rock and folk rock although they dabble in all sorts of genres.
Witness Me Yes!! I *love* AFI. I’m not sure when they’re putting out new music, but they released the Missing Man EP in December (gee, I didn’t even realize it’d been that long!). It wasn’t my favorite, but it was better than a lot of the Blood Album imo. And yeah, I call the Decemberists folk/indie rock. Sorry, I didn’t see this till just now
I think this song is about the freedom and importance of the press. Because no matter what the US says “is so”, the anchorman on tv can still say “la di da di da di diddle diddle da” or make it less “so”.
I think it has more to do with the US abuse and misuse of power, and the way in which everyone just ignores it all. They all get on with their day, none the wiser or just plain apathetic to it. Just my take anyways. There are many ways to interpret these lyrics.

Honey, for one thing, learn English grammar. For another thing, this song was written over a decade ago. I don't think they thought of ripping you off when they released it .

I love this story
Was it the first time you heard them?
That's where my CD went! (just kidding - maybe).
I miss this era of music.
I just graduated from college. This song strangely makes me feel accomplished. Ear to ear grin. And that tan Saturn parked outside the school brings back good memories.
How the hell has this not got more views
Surprised this doesn't have more views. Great song and video.
it has a million views under the title '16' :)

Just watched this today for the first time. Still dead on and relevant. Great song also, love this band.
My favorite music video ever.

So great! Would love a higher quality upload :)
Time for a remastered video, Decemberists!

Rushmore.
Manuteist that's what i thought this was at the beginning, lol. if you like this video, watch the movie rushmore, it's very similar.
I watchex Rushmore because of this song. They had no relation but I still loved the movie
Tim Pool mentioned this. Thought I would check it out. Not disappointed.

Yes, but you can't really call the Decemberists lo-fi, can you?
No, you can't
I mean, this has drums in it…

Bravo. Lo-fi was long dead, even when you posted this gem years ago...
This song is how I learned math
There are plenty of lo-fi bands. In fact, lo-fi itself is a genre.

The Decemberists are a first rate band and have never ripped anyone off. They're one of the most original voices in music today.

donald trump
Nope. This is about George W. Bush (and supporters) who started a war with Iraq under false pretenses. Much, much worse than Trump ... so far.
This has literally nothing to do about trump its literally about Americas obsession with joing or starting wars

"Severed" from their newest album is a diss track at Trump.
Is this about Joe Biden now?
Its about america in general, so yeah. Biden isnt much better than Trump when it comes to war.
