Musashi was commissioned in mid-1942 and was refitted to serve as the flagship of the Combined Fleet for the remainder of the year. In early 1943, the ship was transferred to Truk, Japan's main wartime naval base in the South Pacific theater, and made several sorties with the fleet that year in search of American troops, but all failed. During 1944, she was used several times to move troops and equipment between Japan and various occupied islands. Musashi was torpedoed by an American submarine in early 1944 and was forced to return to Japan for repairs, during which time the Japanese Navy greatly enhanced her anti-aircraft armament. She participated in the Battle of the Philippine Sea in June but had no contact with U.S. surface forces. On 24 October 1944, during the Battle of Leyte Gulf, Musashi was sunk by an estimated 19 torpedoes and 17 bombs from U.S. carrier aircraft. More than half of the crew were rescued. Her remains were found in March 2015 by a team of researchers hired by Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen.
