I was taught in a tailor shop to better any cutting to fold hem under, stitch close to the edge, cut close to the first stitching and then roll under and stitch the second time. Comes out perfect every time.

This was insanely helpful! I'm so happy you made this video and I'm even happier I found it. I was hoping I could ask a question. I'm doing alterations on my own wedding gown, can't afford a pro to do it. I can't stand the train.. I'm thinking of just cutting it right off. But it's about 2 1/2 feet long and tulle. Would the part where you talk about working with the curve be what I'd have to do to keep it laying right once I have the gown on? I just want to cut it so it's floor length and even with the rest of the gown. I already did this to the polyester part of the train but the tulle layers make me nervous

Thank you so much for this video! Have you ever tried staystitching one milimeter away from the edge and then using the rolled hem foot? don't ask me where I got that idea from. Some video I can't find anymore, but it seriously works. and then just follow the regular instructions for using the rolled hem foot, but holding the edge low and following the angle of the cut out on the foot. It works every time for me. I even did your curved fabric edge on purpose and cut it waving back and forth. It works every time. Try it out and let me know what you think.

Hello again :). I am taking on a new project where I will be hemming about 50 formal gowns. I want to do a rolled hem. The gowns are constructed in such a way that it has the skirt and a second skirt that lays over the first skirt and is open in the front. The under skirt has an off white panel down the front of the gown the over skirt is black and extends over the off white panel in the shape of an upside down V down the front of the dress. The second skirt is attached at the waist only and flows over the under skirt. The front panel of the black over skirt is a chiffon that is two layers thick at the front to the side seam and is one layer thick in the back. My question is; do I just roll both layers together on those front panels? Also should I stop machine stitching the hem a little before the end in the dress front and hand stitch the hem on the front panels up to the finished edge? Most hems are a complete circle with no beginning or end. In this top skirt the hem ends on either side of the off white panel. Is there a trick to finishing those points that you can recommend?

Can we talk about the rolled hem foot for a second? Bernina's video had a major light come on for me and i finally get how the foot is supposed to work. ua-cam.com/video/HV3Sy8HhQ_Y/v-deo.html . On the left of the foot, there is an angled notch. If you make sure the raw edge follows that edge, it'll double roll. The thread handles to pull the fabric into the foot are genius. And you control the fabric from the left, don't try to force the roll from the right, move fabric from the left more right, it feels like you are going to make a curved stitch but it comes out straight.

    Omg... The SCISSOR tutorial...
Beginning: Does she think we are all stupid? End: Nope... I'm the stupid one. 40 years old and never been using my scissors right! 😫
Thanks for this whole tutorial. There was SO much to take in and learn!

Years ago my father took my calculator away and told before I use it I should try learning to calculate without it. This would help me establish a better understanding of math and how to use this knowledge.
I am finding the same applies to sewing. There are many “tools” designed to save time or increase expertise and outcome. But all too often one finds their attempts to use them unsuccessful. Because they don’t have a basic knowledge of how to accomplish the task without them and soon they are seen as a hindrance, a progress stopper. I was this person and when I first came across this video I quickly ignored it thinking it was too “outdated” and that the modern approach using specific presser feet for this task would turn out better. Boy was wrong. So I had to humbly return like a dog with his tail between his legs and strictly follow your instructions. I am truly every so grateful to you because I found I am now able to execute this task better and better with each practice session. Now I feel more confident and comfortable
    Thanks again!

That's so awesome to hear!!! I'm so happy for you! That's how many of my "different" techniques were born- out of frustration with heavily marketed gadgets but a love for how fabric actually "works." Welcome to the community!

After watching this I used my zipper foot for the first time to sew a rolled hem on a bridesmaid dress. Worked like a charm. I also have a rolled hem foot for my machine and can never get it quite right. Never again will I try it after this. Thank you.

Oh lord, the rolled hem foot. I learned to use one and like it just fine now, but there was so much cussing involved in the learning process, lol!

Thank you. I love your fine finishing techniques. I love sewing dresses for special occasions but i was aware that I was lacking the high-end couture skills. I've seen some YT sewing tutorials that get the outside look right, but the inner side of the dress is a mess. I was looking for a master seamstress - You are one :) God Bless

found you while I was preparing myself to hem my bridesmaid dresses. I don't know why I didn't try to do them myself for previous dresses since I sew, but thank you for this in-depth tutorial. You definitely got me to laugh by keeping it real haha thank you!

WOW! This was the best tutorial and explanations ever! I could watch your tutorials all day long! Not that I'm going to do bridal dresses, but I have made Christening dresses and Flower Girl dresses. Am thinking about using my wedding gown fabric to make the Flower Girl's dress (to be worn by my great niece) at my son's wedding next summer. Not sure yet. Maybe after I watch more of your videos!, You do beautiful work-- thanks for sharing your expertise with us!!!

Where do you got that invisible zipper foot and will it only work on Juki machine ? Could one use a 2 sided zipper foot and use the left side ? BTW this is a great video and love your sense of humor !

I usually only get from eBay. You could search it. It's usually sold as a set, right and left inv zipper foot. It should say which machines it works with. They are also usually pretty cheap, so I often end up experimenting & tossing the ones I don't like. I don't really know of a more efficient way of picking out the best one for me. Lol 🤷‍♀️ Thank you for watching! Don't forget to Subscribe & hit the bell.

I would love it if my brides brought me dresses to alter that had silk organza hems to roll, but nine times out of ten they are made of polyester. Ugh! A real nightmare! Thanks so much for the tutorial.

Thank you so much for this demonstration. It was just what I was looking for. I used this technique to hem a piece of cotton voile I was making into a shawl. It worked like a dream. So much better than another tutorial I looked at. The teacher wanted us to first sew a line of stitching near the edge then press along the stitching, at that point I just thought that wasn't for me and yours was the next one I tried. Perfect! I have hit subscribe.

Very helpful, thank you. I was able to rescue a bridesmaids dress that had been hemmed and altered by a “professional”. It was pretty bad. I got thee hem trimmed evenly and was able to roll and stitch easily by following your instruction. Much appreciated.

Thank you for this tutorial! I have a 40ish yr old Kenmore machine. I saw rolling hem zipper feet being sold in places like Temu but was confused as to how to attach them until I saw another tutorial about them and realized they are for much newer models where the feet just 'snap' on. My machine requires feet to be installed/screwed on the left side like yours. I've always struggled with the rolled hem - would try to pre-roll and pin it down then try to sew it in place. It sort of worked but I could never roll a nice fine hem. The tension is the key as you have shown. I think I will try and find the left zipper foot. :)

“Just let ‘er flounce.” Thank you for that. I have been pressing it wrong and doing not 2 but 3 lines of stitching for my rolled hems and still my hems are not tiny. I am making my third wedding dress. My sister’s was my first then mine. Fast forward 25 years and many prom and bridesmaid dresses later. I am now making my daughters wedding dress with an A line skirt and multiple layers of curved rolled hems. Wish me luck.

Julie Anne Moore Edwards. Congrats on your daughter’s wedding and her I am sure her beautiful gown. You are many steps ahead of me on the gown front. I should have said that I am preparing to sew my daughter’s wedding dress. Her wedding in in July of this year. We are at the planning stages which right now entails binge watching these fantastic videos and coming up with the design and shopping for fabric lace etc. The hem always scares me the most ! Best to you and your daughter.

I'm sweating about two prom dresses coming my way from granddaughters. I know money was an issue so I can't wait to see how they were cut! You mentioned a fine needle and wondering about the type of thread on synthetic fabric because 40 wt is pretty standard, unlike availability for heirloom sewing. What do you think about matching the color of the thread? Thank you so much.

when I was in fashion school and doing a Lingerie class we were taught to always fold over once only and sew 1mm from the edge then trim it off and fold over again to get the final 2mm edge..... but I really would love it if someone showed how to do this on circular organza as you would find on a frilled or waterfall collar...
