    Rrriiingggg….Rrrriiiingggg….’Hallo, Major Silva speaking.’ Hi-Ho nodded silently, then held out the receiver to the CO. It’s for you Colonel.
    Sparky took the phone, but he was silent for a minute before he spoke:
    Yes, the training is going according to plan, Sir. We finished the air to ground exercises two days ago and now we…yes Sir…
    He was cut short and then his face turned dead serious. Seeing any emotions on Sparky’s face is an uncommon sight, it’s like waiting for Clint Eastwood to blush or smile…Hi-Ho knew this was not an ordinary check up on how their 2 week training detachment was going. Something big was going down, but what? China attacked Taiwan? The president is dead? What could it be?!
    The Stingers had left the States a week earlier, and after a painfully long flight across ‘the pond’ and copious amounts of piddle packs filled, the 8 Vipers touched down at RAF Lakenheath, home of the 48th Fighter Wing flying the F-15E Strike Eagle. They were to carry out some large scale training exercises joined by a few RAF Typhoon and F-35 Squadrons. Everything has been going according to plan, and the Squadron seemed to enjoy the action as well as the change of scenery, but this phone call was like a rock thrown into a glassy mountain lake.
    After what seemed like an eternity, Lt.Col Spacek hung up the phone and turned to the bystanders. I want everyone in the briefing room in 10 minutes.
    Dawg was the last one to enter the room, Sparky’s piercing gaze made it clear to him that there was no time to waste and he should shut the door and sit his ass down with a sense of urgency. Kanget and Pecker were chatting and laughing but they were briskly cut short when the Lt Colonel cleared his throat.
    ‘Ladies and gentlemen. We’re at war. This is not a drill’
    The air froze in the room, you could cut the silence with a butter knife. Only the smell of sweaty Nomex lingered.
    ‘This morning, Russian cruise missiles hit several military as well as civilian targets in Finland, while armored divisions pushed through the border approximately 20 miles deep into Finnish territory. It’s a full on invasion. Nobody wanted to get their hands dirty two years ago when the same thing happened in Ukraine, but this time things are different. Although Finland is not a NATO member officially, several countries pledged their allegiance at once and are sending air, ground and naval units to fight alongside the Finnish. The POTUS was among the first to throw their hat in the ring, so we’re going to Finland, and the Eagle boys are gonna follow us in a few days. Any questions so far?
    Utah spoke up:
    Sir, don’t the Russians have their plates full with what’s going on in Ukraine?
    Sparky shrugged.
    Yes we thought so, and we have no idea why they decided to attack Finland. Maybe they miscalculated, thinking nobody will intervene because Hungary is still blocking Finland’s NATO membership. Of course, according to the Russians it’s just retaliation. The Finnish started it when they shot down a TU-22 a few days ago. But that’s typical Kremlin horse manure: The HUD tape clearly shows the tail gunner opened fire first, after the bomber was intercepted over Finnish airspace.
    Scooter raised her hand.
    Sir, why us? What about the Vipers in Spangdahlem and Aviano?
    Good question. We don’t know if this attack is part of a larger plan, so the 52nd and the 162nd are staying put for now in case they’re needed where they are. We’re going to Rovaniemi, which serves both as a civilian and military airbase. It’s also been hit by a few missiles but according to the latest intel it's still fully operational. We will be at the military ramp north of the runway.
    Are we gonna fly with the Finnish Air Force there? - Roach interrupted
    Actually, we’re gonna have the whole base for ourselves. The civilian aircraft that are still airworthy are being evacuated as we speak.
    And the Finnish? They fly Hornets, right?
    That’s right, but not from Rovaniemi. They have a sophisticated system of road bases. They took off immediately after the attack and dispersed their jets in the woods.
    Is it safe for us to be at the base, then?
    Pff…safe…Sparky scoffed - no it’s not. But it’s war. We’ve been preparing for this for decades during the cold war, and now the moment of truth has come. An open war against Russia. I’ll give you a minute to savor that thought, then go pack your things and get ready to leave. We step to the jets at 0300h, wheels up at 0400h, we’ll refuel when we reach the Norwegian coast, and then once again just before entering Finnish airspace. We should be there just after sunrise. Make sure you get some chow, it’s gonna be a long one. And pack your warmest clothes, it’s even colder there than this God forsaken place.
    This will be a show that you’re going to remember for the rest of your lives. You’re the best fighter pilots in the world, representing the greatest country. I’m proud of every one of you, and I look forward to seeing you on the ground at Rovaniemi.
    Alright, Dismissed.

    actually looks pretty good. I don't really need the music at the end of the mission and the footsteps of the ground crew are a little too loud for me

      Normally you wouldn't hear them anyway but Im 99% sure it's creators intent just so you know something is actually happening. But yes, could be fine tuned to be slightly quieter.

    Even tho the F16 is my main DCS jet. I feel I'm still far from proficiency enough to do campaigns like this. I can put warheads to foreheads(mosty) but those procedures, and tacan etc. Never manage to remember those.

      I'm in a very similar place as you. I bought the gamblers campaign and was completely lost 10 min in on mission 1.
      There is a lot to learn. And I'm having trouble finding the material.

    I see on your knee boards that you have color tabs. How do you use the Shortcuts?

    • @Carbon_715
      @Carbon_715  4 місяці тому +1

      When you initially bring up a kneeboard, there is an option to pin it. The colored tabs are the pins or "favorites"

      No worries in the lower left corner of the kneeboard it should say pin above the left and right arrows.

    Carbon, can you direct me to some material where i can learn the tactics needed to fly these campaigns?
    I have spent over a year now learning the F16. I have read the DCS manual and an official Airforce manual. Im not yet where i would like to be, but im not half bad.
    But when it comes to campaigns, especially the new ones ( i.e., the gamblers), it's quickly apparent i dont know the procedures or tactics needed to fly these missions. I have been looking but can't find this information.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @Carbon_715
      @Carbon_715  4 місяці тому +1

      I don't know of anything specific out there really. Tactics I pray isn't floating around out there, that wouldn't be good. As for procedures, that's a bit vague but should be out there in a -1 manual. But what really helped me, was dedicating time to join either a full on milsim group or milsim lite group to really come to grips with things. They usually have the material, it only requires your time and dedication at that point. Unfortunately, I haven't much of the former nowadays so I'm out of touch with some groups. Feel free to comment anything specific and I'll try to help.

      @Carbon_715 Thanks for the info.
      This question might sound stupid, but I'm a 53 year old dude who has never played video games until I found DCS.
      How do I find and join these groups?

    • @Carbon_715
      @Carbon_715  4 місяці тому +1

      Sorry for taking so long to get back but there's a few places. You will want to get the discord app though as 99% of DCS players use that. Then you can join the DCS official discord, or Hoggit. You can use Reddit #wingmanfinder, the DCS website forums, and even Facebook DCS pages to find some really good groups.

    I hope it gives you the option or forces you to refuel at the tanker. It doesn’t feel as satisfying to complete a mission that you only partially completed

    • @Carbon_715
      @Carbon_715  5 місяців тому

      Maybe other missions. It doesn't make sense with this one. You start observation right indicating you have already received some gas. On top of that you land with way too much gas as it is.
