Mehmet Okur vs. Shaquille O'Neal: Range vs. Power (2003)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- November 18, 2003 - While Detroit Pistons head coach Larry Brown preferred he do the bulk of his damage inside, Mehmet Okur's natural inclination often led him drifting toward the perimeter, where he boasted a skill set rarely seen among 6-foot-11, 250-pound centers. In the Pistons' first regular season matchup against the Los Angeles Lakers, Okur's perimeter emphasis served as a stark contrast to Shaquille O'Neal's post game of doom. Okur traded baskets with O'Neal, finishing with 13 points in 23 minutes during his team's 106-96 win. O'Neal, plagued by foul trouble throughout, countered with 20.
Following the midseason acquisition of Rasheed Wallace, Okur saw his playing disappear into thin air. In a rematch with the Lakers in the 2004 NBA Finals, Okur played just 38 total minutes over the course of a five game series. His place in Larry Brown's doghouse, combined with Detroit's inability to afford both Okur and Rasheed Wallace going forward, led to Okur's signing with the Utah Jazz during the 2004 offseason.
Upon his arrival in Salt Lake City, Okur remained diplomatic.
"Last year, especially at the beginning, we didn't understand each other well. Then we got better every day," Okur said. "I don't have problem with him. I think he's a good coach, and he likes to work hard. He's likes to win. That's Larry Brown."
Okur went on to become a fan favorite in Utah, developing into an NBA all-star with a penchant for coming up big in the clutch.

Okur was the first example of today's modern centers. His shots were awesome.

Sabonis too
1:06 After Okur makes the long 2-pointer, "Larry Brown just said to Okur, 'nice shot but take the ball to the basket". Today, most coaches would tell him to take a half step back for the 3. How times have changed.
if you shoot from there - shoot 3, no step back needed, just don't step inside like Mehmet did
why would he take it to the basket against a stronger player? This is why modern day coaching is better, They dont act like everything has to be in the paint
Name 1 coach that would tell a player to take a step back and shoot the 3? they wouldnt tell them NOT to do it, but they sure wouldnt tell them to do it!
Men thats so true
They would definitely tell them to do it, coaches hate mid range shots today, it's all about 3s, the mid range shot is dying, and for a very good reason
Okur just arrived too early for the NBA. And since they acquired Sheed, he was expendable. He would flourish in today's game though!
Flourished in Utah before the injuries. Made an all star appeaeance
They lost Okur the season After winning the championship. He was super talented.
He was not expendable. He was a major part of 2004 and would of beat SA if he stayed in 2005. He wanted to be a starter but sheed was our starter so he went to the Jazz and became their star player.
I mean he was an All-Star
@@ryanreedtv3242 he wasnt their star player. That jazz team was like the pistons team that beat the lakers. I think that point guard was their main star, but they also had kirilenko, boozer? and others i think.
Having a skillset is one thing. But this is a sophomore that goes against a modern day Goliath with unmatching dominant game. Yet he still never stands down. His confidence was amazing and this guided him to be Sloan's Money man.
and he won a chip
European that's why
He earned the right to be called a champion there from the look of it
Memo was a nightmare match up for shaq. Due to his 3 point and mid range shooting
Traditional Vs slighty Modern Bigman
Mehmet Okur's biggest misfortune is larry brown.
larry didn't like the man in the center position using a 3-point shot. he would hate it so pistons lost memo okur. Thanks to larry, jazz found a gold mine. :) If the piston could keep the Memo Okur on the team, they could have had long-term success.

Okur, turkuglu, peja, kirilinko and many more would benefit tremendously in today’s NBA. Specially Kirilinko, a stretch forward who can shoot 3s and also great perimeter defender and a great rim protector.
Shaq always said he hated guarding big men who can shoot. This is an example of how he would struggle in the modern game. No one would be able to guard him but he wouldn't be guarding anyone either.
One might say Okur is the one that ended big powerful centre era, he always performed great against Shaq and Yao Ming, those two are too slow to catch him on the three point line.

I used to love playing with Okur in video games. Sidenote: The Pistons probably would have had a run like the Lakers if they had just drafted Melo lmao.
In a China tv show, Yao Ming mentioned the center he don't like to matchup is Okur, because he always go outside and shoot. Very difficult for big guy like Yao and Shark to defend.

The NBA kept a pretty strict salary cap on team payrolls, but they made an exception for re-signing draft picks who had previously had a very low rookie contract. Unfortunately, it only applied to first-round picks. The Pistons were actually punished for making a great draft pick in the second round, and Okur was too valuable a player to re-sign within their cap space.

Shaq has zero range. If he isn't 3 feet from the basket he can't make a shot. Can't shoot a jumper. Can't shoot a ball with 2 hands. Can't shoot a free throw.
