My grandmother was 8 years old and living on California Street at the time of the 1906 earthquake. She lived to be 96 years old and even though she was one of the bravest people I ever met, she would never talk about the earthquake. Her little brother was two at the time, and not remembering it, he returned to San Francisco as an adult and settled down there. Whenever my grandmother would go out to the west coast to visit him, she would stay the night in Oakland rather than sleep in San Francisco.

@@samlouwagie3899 yes, 1897. Her birthday was November 12. As a matter of fact, she was a young nurse in NYC in 1918, and said her 21st birthday was unforgettable, because all the celebrations for the end of WWI were going on.

In 1976 I saw a film of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake that is kept in the CSUN teachers library. It was excellent! I keep hoping to see that footage on UA-cam but haven't yet. It is the best coverage of the event I have seen and beats this clip.

I remember that one. I was on that many times. It was interesting
You got on and stood there then all of a sudden the ground shakes like crazy. Very surreal!. In 1999 I felt an Earthquake when I lived in San Francisco. It woke me up because it happened in the early morning. The dresser drawer flung open and my bed moved and some furniture fell down. It was a 5.0 earthquake but strong enough to not forget it.

Wow. My Great~Grandparents were in Golden Gate Park after the 'quake, & ended up moving to Fresno CA.
Then in 1989, I ended up on the Bay Bridge just 35 seconds away from where the span fell; I was an air freight trucker.
Took me from about 5:30 till around 9:30 to go all the way around the south bay & up to So. San Francisco.
It was funny: after the span was replaced, it was easy to tell locals from tourists: locals hit the bridge at about 60 or so mph, but tourists would go about (the speed limit) 45, gawking around themselves at the bridge.
Us locals were like, I ain't gonna be on this bridge longer than I have to...I'm outta here!

Whoa... In 2 Hrs., 5:12 a.m. it will be EXACTLY 114 years since the Great San Francisco Earthquake and Fires, of a magnitude of 7.9 .... my great-grandmother was six years old and escaped to the East Bay across from San Francisco by Ferry and sat with her parents and watched San Francisco burn... her stories were phenomenal... And, my great- great-grandfather had a "Irish Pub" that SURVIVED the Earthquake practically UNTOUCHED! However... the Tall Hotel standing next to "Corey's Irish Pub" was still standing, but the inside was TOTALED! I have a picture of my Grand da's "Corey's Irish Pub" & it was taken by a reporter days after the fires finally were controlled of this little tiny Irish Pub was put in newspapers all around to show how miraculously this little Irish Pub survived, When it should NOT have! Angels most definitely must have been watching over them and their livelihood as they migrated here from Ireland to start a better & new life in San Francisco years earlier. Most of the people are no longer living and me great gram lived to be well into her 90s... I don't know why they call them "anniversaries" but the city my da and his mother and her mother and... Loved San Francisco and returned to start over the life they desperately seeked and reason why they fled Ireland. Remembering the "anniversary" 114 years ago today... April 18, 1906 at 5:12 a.m. 🍀🙏🍀🙏🍀🙏🍀
In MEMORY of ALL the THOUSANDS of Souls who lost their lives and their livelihoods... We will never forget.

I heard about the earthquake back when I was in middle school. it was a devastating event not to mention the fire too. I believe 3,000 people have died during the earthquake. And honestly, I would be terrified during the earthquake.

I'm confused. If this footage was "missing" for a hundred years how did they get it for the "In search of..." episode on earthquakes in the 1970s?
Its good they were able to find it, though. And restore what they could. So much footage captured back then is lost to time. A window in history completely erased.
Its weird how we don't realize how interesting our own existence will be to someone 100 years from now so we are careless with preserving it. Although now with digital cameras there will be too much of it and so I don't think anyone will care. The other side of the coin.
