  • Partial discharge (PD) is a localized dielectric breakdown (DB) (which does not completely bridge the space between two conductors) in solid or fluid electrical insulation under high voltage (HV) pressure. When the Voltage exceeds the breakdown strength of the insulating material part, Partial Discharge starts and continues to deteriorate. When Partial Discharge occurs, various physical and chemical changes can occur, which will result in the insulation failure of Medium and High Voltage electrical equipment. Once PD starts, it will always get worse. 80% of electrical fires are caused by insulation breakdown or failure and PD is the first indication that insulation is faulty. NFPA 70B states that insulation breakdown is a major cause of electrical failure.
    PMDT PDetector is one of the ideal PD detection tools for On-Line Partial Discharge (OLPD) testing or under voltage conditions without shutdown or downtime. PMDT PDetector uses all 5 types of OLPD sensor technologies: Ultra-High Frequency (UHF), Acoustic Emission (AE), Ultrasonic, High Frequency Current Transformer (HFCT), and Transient Earth Voltage (TEV). All these senors can be configured separately according to the object to be examined.
