Discovering the beauty of Santa Maria - Azores

We leave Malabusca along paths that take us along the "island geopark" to visit the iconic prismatic disjunction of Ribeira de Maloás.
The Ribeira do Maloás is a geological formation, a gigantic outcrop of basaltic columns, with 15 to 20 meters in height and about 220 meters in length.
We continue through a very beautiful area of ​​forest towards the Gonçalo Velho Lighthouse. The Gonçalo Velho lighthouse came into operation on November 15, 1927. The lighthouse was named after the navigator who discovered the island. It is located in Ponta do Castelo on the SE part of the island of S. Maria. It has a tower that is 14 meters high and 114 meters high.
From the lighthouse area we have beautiful views of Maia, which is a summer resort on the southeast coast of Santa Maria Island, in Santo Espírito. Its location is privileged, being close to a cliff that forms a bay, the Maia Bay, which has been classified as a Nature Reserve.
Maia Bay has a natural pool that is very popular with locals and tourists. The place is much appreciated for its beauty and tranquility. The natural landscape of the region that lies between the sea and the mountains is full of vineyards, natural pools and a grandiose waterfall that forms one of the most beautiful settings on the island.
We stayed in the pools to cool off because the heat was getting tight and the water was spectacular.
