Oh, Tipper!! Seeing you get choked up made me start crying. Pap's and Paul's voices blend so beautifully. It's always a joy to hear them sing. There was so much heartache in the mountains in the old days...and lots of musicians who worked out their grief with music. I can see why you would think the story behind the song would have originated in Appalachia. Thanks for sharing.
Never heard this before but I can see how you interpreted the way did. Our minds stay young even if our bodies are not always co-operative as we age. Beautiful song, love it 🥰
Loved it. Born and raised and still live in a small town in Pennsylvania, and I don't know why Appalachia and the music just always calls to my soul. I think I am not meant for this world today. I long for a simpler time when we all played silly games outside, cooked our own food, and went to church in our Sunday best. Thank you for your wonderful videos Tipper.
I've heard the title of this song, but never heard it played and sung. Pap and Paul did it justice. Your folks were married the same year my wife Gail and I got married. Aug 27, 1965. Coming on 57 years. She's still the sweet freckled girl I married. I heard Kris Kristofferson sing "Loving her was easier than anything I'll ever do again." That song is pure poetry and describes how I feel about my sweetheart. The main difference is that Kris's song is a lament of lost love. Keep on keeping on Tipper.
I can see why this song makes you tear up. It is beautiful! The older I get the more I treasure every moment I have with my husband. I enjoyed hearing your Pap and Paul sing together. What a beautiful memory!
You have me in tears this morning. This reminds me so much of my own daddy, who was also called Pap. He and my family used to sit around playing guitar and singing songs just like this all the time when he was alive and could still use his arms and hands. They used to go to Townsend for Old Timers Weekend and join others picking and singing. Thank you for those memories.
Wow...I've known this sweet song all my life and grew up 45 miles from Toronto! But I always thought it was some traditional IRISH ballad. What a surprise to find out it was written here in Canada by a Canadian. This is also the tune that I know to the lyrics. Love their version.

Listening to your dad and your brother sing that beautifully sad song brought tears to my eyes. I remember being young and in love... ❤ Now I am old and have only memories. ✌️
Just lovely…what a tearjerker. Great story! For some reason it makes me think of the song Roy Clark and others have sung…Yesterday When I Was Young. Boy….that song will bring tears to my eyes every time! You’re right Tipper…even though I’ve been married for 40 years in May, I still look at my husband the same way that I did back then and often wonder where all the time has gone. He cooked me a Valentines lunch today and tells me that I’ll always be his cute, young thing! ❌⭕️❌⭕️❤️❤️❤️
Well, Tipper, I was ok this morning until Pap and Paul began to sing! Pap’s harmony is so spot on and Paul’s voice is awesome. We are so blessed that you made videos of them singing and playing their guitars. I cried immediately just seeing those two together singing. What a blessing! Thank you for letting us “feel” this love!! I’ve already played the song 3 times, and am fix’n to make it 4!!! ♥️🙏🏼♥️

And you're right, sometimes you love a song, but then you forget about it. This video has made me want to listen to every version I can find. Right now!! Thank you for posting this.

“ The blackest Crow “ is my favorite appalachian love song. Not that I listen to love songs much. I’m more of a “ Cumberland gap “ kind of feller… Great song … thanks for sharing it.
I have heard people play this song over the years. I figured it was an old timey mountain song too. Performed in this way, it's got that "old mountain sound." Almost "High Lonesome." A beautiful story about a beautiful love song, Tipper. It's easy to understand why it's your favorite love song. When you got choked up telling the story behind When You and I Were Young Maggie, I got choked up right along with you. Thank you for including Pap and Paul's video of it. It's very popular, and enjoyable, as a traditional "Dixieland" jazz band instrumental number. Another similar love song that I'm quite fond of is When I Grow Too Old to Dream. It also shines as a traditional jazz instrumental.
Very appropriate to have a love song on the eve of Valentine’s Day, Tipper. I’ll celebrate my 76th birthday the day after Valentine’s Day. Hello Tipper. Good to see you here today and your findings concerning your favorite song; very interesting. Your crafted ear rings caught my eye and felt possibile they may be of your daughters’ workmanship, they are beautiful.
What a sweet song. And yes the older we get the more we see what matters. All those memories and experiences bind people together in a special way. My parents were married 54 years. I can still see Daddy holding mama's hand as she was close to passing away and telling her it was ok to go. He grieved so the first year I feared we would lose him. When God invented marriage he blessed us with something precious. God Bless yall and Happy Valentines!!
That was such a lovely song. Thanks for sharing it with us. We so appreciate all that you do to educate the world about our cultural heritage. You are a national treasure and that is no lie. God bless you, Tipper.
Such beautiful singing and playing by Paul and Pap. So much talent and grace in your family Tipper , must make you extremely proud of them all. Hearing where the song originated gives me a bit more Canadian pride. Thank you.
Beautiful story. Lots of heart in it. I’ve been fortunate to have 41 years with my beautiful Barbara Ann. It’s 42 this September. I’d be lost without her. We’re both 65 now and starting to feel our years. God blessed me with the best wife I could ever hope for. As an amateur jeweler, I can’t help but notice your earrings. I wish I could see them up close.
My parents had been married 68 1/2 years when my father passed away, in 2017. My mother was 16 when they were married. My papa was 6 years older than her yet their birthdays were on the same day. ♥️ My grandma didn’t want him to marry a younger woman. So, when grandma asked how old my mother was papa just told her that their birthdays were on the same day. Of course, when papa brought her home to meet his parents they loved her all the same.
Tipper, You were near tears talking about the love and short marriage between Maggie and her husband. It also evokes some strong emotions for myself. And for the record, I prefer music that is played by ear, each player finding their voice, chords and such and starting to remember the old lyrics. And if you accidentally substitute new chords or words, that's fine too. Makes for a new and special experience. Thanks for that very special Valentine gift from Paul and Pap. Never heard it done better. And you're not nearly old yet. You just have an old and very sensitive soul.
reminds me of my grandparents....he died two months to the day after she did....they said his appendix burst, but I know the truth. He died the say she did, it just took his body two months to catch up. thank you for sharing this beautiful song
I've never heard of this. Thank you for sharing it with us. The song and story about the couple was so beautiful and touching. Always great to hear Pap and Paul.
Since I grew up in the Cleveland area, it was interesting to hear of George Washington Johnson's connection to The Plain Dealer. It's good that you have recordings such as this to remember Pap by.
What a beautiful song! Perfect for Valentines Day. We will be celebrating our 43rd Valentines Day together. I always write in his card, - Grow old with me, the best is yet to be. - poet Elizabeth Browning.
I hope you've seen the film "SongCatcher" which is about the history of the "love songs" which are Elizabethan Ballads brought to the mountains by our ancerstors from England and Scotland. It was filmed near Asheville, set in 1919. A GREAT story. I think Dolly Parton helped with the funding. My mother loved it, SO many songs she knew. The character "Viney" reminded me of my aunt (mother's sister) Velma Georgia Yearwood.
In case no one has told you your amazing. I truly appreciate all you have taught me.

Thank you for sharing a bit of their story 😀
Tipper, thanks for sharing. It took me awhile to view the video during commercials for the Superbowl.
Be still my heart ❤️ how beautiful .
I've seen other loves end like that. Thank you for watching 😀
I absolutely love that song also, and even more so being it was written about a real Maggie.
I agree the story makes it even more special 😀
A wonderful song and with thought an emotional one. The age of voices carry a lot weight to the ears. Thank you for sharing.
WoW, what a Beautiful song! I love your story telling. Thank you so much for sharing ❤
bittersweet is right but oh so beautiful. Thank you for sharing this.
Such a beautiful song! Love their voices!
Beautiful Tipper I am also in tears thx for sharing
Beautiful song and talented musicians. Love it!
What a beautiful song! Perfect for Valentines Day. We will be celebrating our 43rd Valentines Day together. I always write in his card, - Grow old with me, the best is yet to be. - poet Elizabeth Browning.
Sweet!!
GREAT SONG! THANKS FOR SHARING. LOVE THE WIND CHIMES.
A very sweet song indeed. Thank you
Glad you enjoyed it 😀
That's real sweet 🎼💕🌹
