This is the best live version I've ever seen of this song this is definitely my all-time favorite John mellencamp song thank you for posting it kicked ass 👍
I agree, one of the best versions of this song that I ever have heard. Totally kicks ass! The dynamics are simply perfect and the way it builds is truly something else.
If you think this is good, try this version some time from piazman1976. It has Johns best drummer, Kenny Aranoff and I think Johns performance was more over the top. Either are very good. This is one of my favs from John and I've been following him from the beginning, I like Bruce...but I LOVE John!!
This is a great version but I love Kenny's groove even more. Badass song.
He could come knock on my door anytime!! Love this song along!! Wish he would come to Jacksonville FL so that I could see him in concert.
Such a great song. Mellencamp delivered a performance that made this song sound better live than recorded.
This is the best ever watch it ever day and love this song and what a performance ....what some lucky people..Mellencamp is the best and always will be.
I was in upstate NY visiting a friend. We watched this live.
What a show!
0:22 he mentions the hotel down the road. That hotel is actually haunted. I lived 10 minutes from there

I just heard the song the other day for the very first time and I instantly fell in love with it."Could it be your fears of trying something real..." blew my mind!
BADASS SONG
I love the music of USA.. I am from Argentina
There was a day when I've been to some kick ass , backyard cookout house party's but this is top shelf , the band and Jm's vocals are so tight, great performance
Mellencamp is the best and he was perfect for this kind of concert! I can remember it so clearly watching this when it aired on VH1. Back then my cable tv was routed thru my Pioneer stereo system and it was blasting that day!
LOVED this song then and still now...one of his best!!!
Great performance of my all time favorite Mellencamp song! Unbeleiveable!
"Honey, I'm goin on national TV tonight...Big Backyard BBQ!"
-"Want me to press your vest"?
"No. Hey, look it's my baggy pants, WalMart belt, and wifebeater!"
-"Don't you dare wea-"

Thank you very much! I remember watching this performance when it had originally aired and being more than impressed with his style of drumming. I have NEVER forgotten him or this song ever since! Thanks again!!!

A slice of American pie. In a Americana setting. Singing an American male dream. He sells that we'll.
hes the shit
Is that lead guitar player playing a David Grissom signature PRS? that would be a cool nod to the master
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Yeah, this is my all time favorite John Melloncamp song. Do you know if there is a way to get this show on dvd?
Knock Knock
Top artist ................ for those of you that have seen him perform live.you shouldn't have a hard time filling in the dots.😊
He was 45 here and now he's 70. Wow. I was 30 then. Ugh.
@pboscophoto, actually, I would consider Mellencamp up there as a great American songwriter and performer. He may not be a Young or a Dylan, but he resonates well with the common people, including me. His politics -- always left-wing -- have been easy to digest. He captures people not on our conflict but on our common ground.
I wonder how much that cost?
Mr Happy Go SEXY😊
@John Mellencamp Oh my. I wish it were really you. I’ve been a HUGE fan since the first album. I have also been to so many shows over the years. Too many to count ❤️ Please come knocking at my door Anytime. ♥️🤘🏼
@ctoregan He may not be "young". Gawd I hope not. He is absolutely so much better than Young ever dreamed to be
@11xzxzxz Ya know, I am going to extend a temporary apology. I do not "KNOW" the early Neil Young. I'll give it a shot.
Who's the drummer on this song?
Sean Sherrod Eight Years later you get a response. That’s Dane Clark who replaced Kenny Aronoff.
Neil Young is as Canadian as hockey and maple syrup, but a great songwriter regardless
@pherrod54 1996
So much without Kenny drumming
Annoying host😂😂
This is a DEEP song. Probably not appreciated by this audience. But very intelligent and telling. One of my favorites
