Ken was trying to kill the old lady but kept accidentally killing her dogs. The irony was that he was an animal lover, and didn't intend to harm them. That's why he's so distraught and attends their funerals. Even when she does die, it's only indirectly because of him. Presented in a more serious way it could have been horrific, but the way they died was so cartoonish that it was hard to take seriously. I thought the dog business in "National Lampoon's Vacation" was a lot more brutal.
Ken's plan was not to kill the Yorkies, but he is trying to kill the old lady who always has her dogs with her. Ken is an animal lover, but the irony is that he keeps accidentally killing the old woman's beloved dogs... which accidentally gives her a heart attack. This is one of my top 5 comedies of all time.
Archie (Archibald) Leech was the real name of English film star Cary Grant, one of the top Hollywood stars in the 1950s. I think they chose the name in tribute to him. There's another film with the same cast called "Fierce Creatures", about trying to save a struggling zoo.
If you watch the film “Arsenic and old lace” with oddly enough Cary Grant one of the gravestones in the cemetery next door is labeled “Here lies Archie Leach”
14:19 "I hope he's not planning to kill the other two dogs, because-" He wasn't _planning_ to kill _any_ of them. The old _lady_ is his target, but he keeps missing. And that _particularly_ sucks for him because he's an _animal_ lover.
I think I have seen your reaction to Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The lawyer and the guy with the stutter played Sir Galahed the Pure who wound up at the Castle Antrax with all the virgins in it. And Sir Lancalot Who cut up everyone at the Wedding. I love that movie. lol Great reaction.
John Cleese (Archie) and Michael Palin (Ken) played many parts in The Monty Python movies you saw. For example, Cleese was the French knight in the castle.
A real fun fact here is that John Cleese was an insanely good law student when he was at university and people suggested that he would have been one of the best lawyers in the country..but comedy was just too strong in him..makes this movie even funnies because you see how he could have been ended for real had life taken an other turn
John Cleese and Michael Pain were in Monty Python. Cleese was also Nearly Hesdless Nick in Harry Potter. Kevin Kline won an Oscar for playing the deranged idiot Otto. See Dave for a very different cordy. He was also in Silverado. Archie Leech is legendary actor Cary Grant's real name.
Kevin Kline was also pretty amazing in "I Love You to Death (1990)".. Although I originally only watched it for Tracey Ullman (accent change and all) his was the stand-out performance for me.
The dog's deaths were ACCIDENTS!!! Ken was trying to kill the old woman but kept missing. That is why he felt so bad, attended the dog's funeral, and so forth. He was an animal lover so his mistakes hurt him deeply. Yes, this is a funny and unpredictable story where no one is completely sympathetic and they are all lawbreakers and only Ken is anywhere near trustworthy.
Fantastic movie with top jokes, only dog and ornamental fish lovers have to be brave. 😁 This pitch-black crook comedy based on a script by John Cleese is an absolute classic. Especially the middle section. Kevin Kline deserved his Oscar as the arrogant would-be intellectual. All the actors are outstanding.
Dasha, this film was an enormous hit but to your point about Wanda caring or not, they had to fix that. In the original version she screws everyone over and doesn’t care about Archie. The test screenings hated that the romance wasn’t real and so they softened the tone to be more romantic. The finished version you just watched that adds the romance, removes the blood from the dogs’ death and the scenes of Otto shooting cats’ tails off, made a huge return at the box office for such a low budget film.
The movie you are thinking of with the dog was National Lampoon's Vacation. I'm not sure why your views are going down. You have a great channel. I'm a long time subscriber although I changed my handle a few times when I started looking into streaming games. You have a great reaction channel. I really hope things turn around for you. :)
Dasha, you SHOULD HAVE remembered John Cleese and Michael Palin, both cast members of the Monty Python crew, because you've reacted to both Monty Python and the Holy Grail AND Life of Brian, 2 hilarious movies. They always play multiple roles in their own movies as well as their TV show, Monty Python's Flying Circus, so you should even be used to them dressing up as various characters. Now, about the animals ... it's a MOVIE !!! No animals were harmed or killed, and the characters were showing you a comedy. It's ok to "suspend belief" because ALL movies, for the most part, are fictitious ... they never really happened. Now, movies like John Wick are MEANT for you to be mad at the killing of animals, but in this one, the animals being killed are "accidental" ... not intended. They happened in the course of trying to cause the old lady to die from a heart attack, not from the killing of the dogs, but from almost being killed herself ... so it looked like natural causes, and the dogs being killed were merely the result from Ken not knowing how to do what he was trying to do. Sometimes, you NEED to sit back and watch the movie and take in what is going on, and NOT get so involved with each and every second of it. You'll destroy the flow of it.
When Archie starts speaking Russian to Wanda, he is apparenting reciting “The Prayer,” by Mikhail Lermontov. John Cleese didn’t know Russian, so he just memorized the phonetics of the poem. He didn’t know what he was saying. 😆
2:09 Otto is such an odd character. I mean, this is London. It's the capitol of England. It's a place for the English and anglophiles. Otto is neither. Over and over again, in this movie, he expresses disapproval for the English and the way they do things and I think, "If you dislike the way things are in England so much, why do you remain in England?"
Not a big deal if you didn't find the dog or fish killing scenesfunny . Anyone whos subscribed would probably expect that you wouldn't laugh at those parts. Bless your good heart.
I was in London shortly after this came out and on a river tour, they pointed out historical sites, and the building where John Cleese was hung out of the window i this movie.
If you liked this you'd like 'Fierce Creatures' Made by the same people, with the same actors. It's about a Zoo, anything more might be spoilers, but I will say they're much better to Animals in Fierce Creatures.
19:15- I Don't think those were real fish Otto was eating..I mean, no better way to get your self sick ( And possibly hospitalized) than eating raw fish from an aquarium tank..the water alone would be naaassty.
The cast reunites for Fierce Creatures. Not a sequel, but also a funny comedy. Fish Called Wanda is one of a handful of 'Monty Python adjacent movies', with two or more Pythons involved in a production. Yellowbeard (one of the few with Graham Chapman before he passed), Splitting Heirs, Erik The Viking, and most of the early work of Terry Gilliam (Brazil & Baron Munchausen definitely) all fit into this little niche subgenre of film. Probably a few others I'm forgetting 😅
Thanks Dasha, i really enjoyed your reaction. Just to reassure you, the fish that Kevin Kline eats in that scene weren’t real-they were made of gelatin, so no animals were harmed. The movie uses a lot of dark humor, which is why some scenes are intentionally shocking or absurd, like the ones involving the dogs. By the way, Kevin Kline _ Otto_ was so brilliant in his role that he won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for this film!
Dasha i am so glad 🫡✋🏽that you enjoyed this veteran classic movie: my mother introduced me to it years ago and i had to rewatch it a few times i keep missing si many many punch lines and deliveries from Calvin and cast
The lawyer's name, Archie Leach, is a salute to Cary Grant, whose real name was Archie Leach. Grant arranged to have many of his movies include passing references to an offscreen character named Archie Leach, whom of course we never see.
How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood? 😆 Kevin Cline won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his hilarious portrayal of Otto. Well done!! 🏆
Oh Dasha, didn't you recognise John Cleese (Archie) and Michael Palin (Ken) from "Monty Python"? 😮 And no, Ken didn't kill the dogs on purpose. These were accidents on his ongoing task to kill the old lady. He is an animal lover. This irony makes the dogs' deaths even more tragic (and hilarious for the audience). 🙂
Some friends of mine grabbed me to see the movie in the theater. I didn't want to go because the title made it sound like a Disney movie. I have never laughed so hard at a movie. What a great cast. Kevin Kline won an Oscar for his performance as Otto.
We used to speak Russian as kids by saying “Brezhnev Andropov” with an accent. We would also do Shakespeare’s “To be or not be” thing delivered as Winston Churchill.
Ken was trying to kill the old woman, because she was a witness. Unfortunately Ken's attempts failed and resulted in accidently killing the dogs. Ken loves animals and was heart broken each time.
😎👍 You have seen John Cleese before. In the first two Harry Potter films, he was "Almost Headless Nick." 🐟 Another fun movie that he and Michael Palin are in is "Time Bandits" (1981). That one doesn't involve any dead dogs or fish. 😉
Great comedy classic! Kevin Kline as otto was hilarious! Jamie Lee Curtis was at her peak in acting! John Cleese was also funny as Archie! Sorry the animal parts bothered you. Funniest part for me was when otto pulls out the chips from hughs nose and he sucks in a big breathe of Air!😂😂 Thanks for sharing Dasha ❤️💛
As has been said the joke is that Ken is an animal lover, it is his intention to kill the old lady, he keeps missing and instead kills her dogs which drives him into deep grief.
I’m a bit surprised you didn’t recognize John Cleese or Michael Palin. They were both members of Monty Python, although Cleese has done a lot since then.
Ken was trying to kill the old lady but kept accidentally killing her dogs. The irony was that he was an animal lover, and didn't intend to harm them. Presented in a more serious way it could have been horrific, but the way they died was so cartoonish that it was hard to take seriously. I thought the dog business in "National Lampoon's Vacation" was a lot more brutal.
Yet, BOTH sets of events were accidental and unintended.
The killing of the dogs was obviously an accident each time, but with added sadness because Ken was such an animal lover.
"Don't call me stupid." LOL!!!

@@shawnmiller4781 Thanks for that, I've seen the film, but never noticed the headstone. This calls for a re-watch!
As many people have already mentioned he wasn't trying to kill the dogs, he killed them by accident while trying to kill the old lady.
2:14 "boob. butt. all in first three minutes." 😆
One of my favorite movies.
"You are the vulgarian, you f*ck.." Always makes me laugh!
I never noticed Stephen Fry (as random guy at airport) in this movie before.
14:19 "I hope he's not planning to kill the other two dogs, because-"
He wasn't _planning_ to kill _any_ of them. The old _lady_ is his target, but he keeps missing. And that _particularly_ sucks for him because he's an _animal_ lover.
Thanks Dasha for watching/reacting to one of my favorite movies.
Hey, Dasha! As others have said, Ken was not trying to kill the yorkies. He was trying to kill the woman and each time the plan backfired.
A fish called Dasha! 🐠 Now that's a movie I would watch forever on repeat 😂🔁
"Boob. butt - all in the first three minutes." Count on Dasha to notice the essentials. 😁
Coincidentally Archie Leach is the birth name of Cary Grant.
At the dog funerals, the choir boys sing "Miserere Domini, canis mortuus est," which is Latin for "Have mercy, Lord, the dog is dead."
The second dog's name (on the gravestone) was "Lucky"!
10:32 "Not yet. I'm thirsty."
Yeah. I think _Archie's_ thirsty.
John Cleese (Archie) and Michael Palin (Ken) played many parts in The Monty Python movies you saw. For example, Cleese was the French knight in the castle.
And Palin had “Huge Tracks of Land”
A real fun fact here is that John Cleese was an insanely good law student when he was at university and people suggested that he would have been one of the best lawyers in the country..but comedy was just too strong in him..makes this movie even funnies because you see how he could have been ended for real had life taken an other turn

0:50 😄Heh. That is a _very_ comfortable looking dog.
*No animals were hurt during filming* of this movie, Dasha.. I hope (I love animals too)
Archie's daughter,Portia,is played by John Cleese's real daughter 🎩
The actress that plays the mom is brilliant!
Fantastic movie with top jokes, only dog and ornamental fish lovers have to be brave. 😁

Your face during the fish and chips scene😮😮😢

I believe the wife did know where the locket came from. She saw Wanda sneaking out. She pretended to love it in order to mess with him.
