    Really glad to see you guys mention the possibility of retrofitting structures to be able to withstand stronger winds. A lot of people aren't even aware that their houses don't have these things, but it's a relatively cheap fix given the potential damages!

      I live on the west coast and all new construction is more or less earthquake resistant. Or retrofitting an older house to its foundation is relatively cost effective

    I dunno how true my statement is, but I think a lot of American homes are built in such cheap way are for the companies that make these homes. If homes get destroyed almost annually, there's always some sort of business building them. Planned obsolescence?

      I grew up in Michigan in a sturdy brick Craftsman bungalow with a basement. As an adult I was in Dallas, TX for 5 years. My son is now in Tuscaloosa, AL. I cannot understand why places like TX & AL that frequently get tornadoes don't build all houses with basements. When we were thinking of buying a house in Dallas, I told my husband "I am the 3d little piggy. I want a house built of bricks. These are all built of straw & sticks for the 1st & 2d piggies. One good huff & puff from the big bad wolf and they are gone." Yep, you learn all the important stuff by kindergarten.

    I was in Lawrence when it hit South of Lawrence. Linwood is 18 miles from Lawrence. The destruction South of Lawrence along K-10 Highway showed the width of the tornado in the treeline. It looked wider than a mile to me. When did they down grade it to an EF4? I recall it being called an EF5. A weatherman on the radio doing the play by play said there were 2 tornadoes orbiting the big one.

    • @spottedtime
      @spottedtime 3 роки тому +2

      I’m not joking, one time during a tornado drill, my class was waiting in the hall and I could literally see windows. Schools should have much better tornado drills locations, then just go into a hallway and sit on the floor because it does very little, when windows are within sight or there are outer walls in the area where the tornado drill is being held.
      The good news is that I live in an area that rarely gets tornadoes, but if there actually was a tornado, a lot of students and staff members are going to die, due to poor locations used during the tornado.
      I wish schools took natural disasters more seriously.

    I was living just north of the tornado they talked about when it came through. Same county, but we just got rain and wind, which was still strong enough to mess things up from the trees getting thrashed. At least with an earthquake you know where your stuff is still roughly. I grew up in west Texas and tornadoes still terrify me, even video of them just shakes me to my bones. The scariest things on earth. I lived through Hurricane Katrina and I wasn't as scared of that storm as I am of tornadoes.
    Why would anyone NOT improve building codes for places that see them so frequently?
    And hearing that there will only be more such storms in the southeast where I'm living now - in a place where the water table is high and the soil is mostly sand - you can't have cellars here. So when there ARE tornadoes (and we've had them, bad ones that tore apart brick buildings and shredded a facade at one college and utterly destroyed an entire building at another college), the best people can do is an inside hallway or maybe a bathroom. It isn't good.
    And even worse - these disasters, like so many others, disproportionately affect people of lower income, in poorer housing, who don't have the options of a safe room or retro-fitting simply because any cost at all is too much money.
    Knowing all this, this whole video had me in tears. But I am glad you present this information without fear mongering, with clear and straight forward facts. It surely will help people.
    And maybe someday we can even get codes in place that can prevent some of the worst destruction.

    You know, with micro technology, they could actually make the reflectors on the roads into mico weather stations with solar energy providing power and wireless transmitter to send the data. That might be expensive, but the fact remains that tornadoes cross roads all the time and such a small device could get more accurate data that might help tell the difference between tornado production and just a nasty super cell. You'd never know until you try.
