Zoologist Answers: WTF is THAT?? (Freaks of Nature)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 вер 2024
- On today's episode of "WTF is THAT??", we'll be going over some animals that went viral due to the ways that they get down with the get down. While these mating rituals/circumstances may seem freaky to us, they represent just a small fraction of the variety of ways life on this planet gets freaky. And so: freaky is in the eye of the beholder.
As always, a huge thanks to Gian for the fantastic editing! :)

Hi! I’m the artist that drew the Twerking mothman featured! One of your lovely viewers added in the order notes that they’d seen it in this video. I’m so grateful not only for the fact you allowed me to get a flood of orders in within a few days, but also because I have a new channel to love and follow! Thanks!
Please tell me her channel has inspired more work. Maybe you could do something with Lindsay in her "see ya!" pose while surrounded by a collection of animals she has talked about? Would be a cool collab if she agrees to it
one question: why though. like its good art but. why
@@hauntedarchivess why not?
I’m Australian and I unfortunately came across one of those moths alone (whilst tripping with my mates) so obviously everyone thought I was just seeing things… spent 10 yrs in the back of my head wondering if that “fucked monster moth” was real or not! Thank you! Adore you and your content please never stop educating.
This is the funniest possible comment you could have made on this particular video, holy shit
Man, you saying that australians didnt believe you that you saw an australian thing in Australia? I cant comprehend that
Well if you're still in touch with those folks, you can scar them for life now.
I would be scarred for life if I saw that moth and never found out what it was
I mean, if I lived in australia, I would just automatically assume the craziest shit I see is real
Unsurprised with the rapid growth of the channel. Amazing information, scientific rigour and energy. Best biology channel on youtube.
much appreciated!! 🖤🖤
woah ur right we're almost at 1mil goddamn!
Def on par with SciShow and Crashcourse.
This lady is awesome. I friggin love the energy!
@@kinda_cold_in_the_closet i’m sure it helps that she already had a large following on tiktok + collabs with casualgeographic but even so a lot of ppl on tiktok arent fans of longform content so the speed of her growth is kinda crazy
That moth's mating form is GENUINELY terrifying! Like, put that in a horror movie and you've successfully horrored me lol
I enjoy you calling it their mating form. Now I will forever think of this when I come across a “this isn’t even my final form” meme.
"Survival of who gets to scissor the most"
This is why i love this channel.
I died. It's my birthday today, and this may have been my best present.
Yippee

Lol I was wondering if I heard that correctly lol 😂

So I'm an 11th grade teacher, and when we are finished with work and I need something to put on, I've started to use your videos because they're super informative and present the info in a fun way! Just wanna say thank you! The students love you, and one said "she's a baddie" (Take that as you will) lol. But love the content, best new channel i've seen in a long time!
💀💀💀💀💀💀
Wouldn't it be a bit of an issue that she frequently swears in her videos?
year11s dont care bout that@@justme-et3sr
@@justme-et3sr they’re 11th graders 💀
@@Bbrain_DeadD I don't exactly know what age people in 11th grade would be. And while it's true that people in school swear a bunch, the teachers usually try to discourage it instead of showing them videos that have swearing in them. Nothing wrong with this video, it's great and I like it a lot. It's just something that we wouldn't be allowed to see at school where I grew up
Lindsay has the vodka aunt with pitbull energy and i love it
There's definitely a merch opportunity here...

broadcast spawning is actually fascinating. it's like dropping expectation down to absolute zero. "if you survived up to this point - we good"
"More danger compound = equals more chicks" *in chad accent*, is the funniest thing I've heard this week🤣 These moths are chad af
The goth butterflies ended up being Chad af lol
They’re essentially spraying pre-cum into the air to let other moths know they are DTF.
I'm making a new energy drink called Danger Compound
666 likess
I can't get over the fact that when moving on to #2 she made a kind of cute and delicate move with her hand and instantly thought "what the hell was that? This is not how I move while I talk" lol 😂
you could really see the “wait why did i do that” in her face and it was so relatable 😭 and the little flourish after, i almost expected some cutesy anime sparkle edit to be thrown in there or something lmao

Boy am i glad Casual Geographic exposed me to your content! You do such a great job, always!
Your energy is incredible! Loving your long form content!
thank you!!!! :)
@@ConQuixote I think the coolest non-sexual reproduction is budding. Non-sexual reproduction is usually really simple though because sexual reproduction breeds *heh* more diversity and allows for more complex organisms.
@@LindsayNikole love you ❤🎉😊
God I am so glad you came to UA-cam to do this long form content. Your energy and your humor are everything. Seriously my current favorite UA-cam channel! And you started the year with like 50k subscribers and now you're at 814k?! So greatly deserved and I am thrilled for you. Keep it up Lindsay!
I love how you mention that our methods may sound nuts to the animals you presented. 🤣
Scorpion: Wait, so you don't eat your partner?
Slug: Wait, so you don't produce a fuck-tonne of slime and hang upside-down?
Moth: Wait, so your males only have one organ that inflates for mating?
Angler: Wait, so your males and females don't permanently fuse?
Worms: Wait, you guys move to mate?
clams: wait, so you don't lure and deepthroat a fish so that your kids can hitch a ride on its gills?
All of them: You guys have sex for fun?? Like, prevent yourselves from reproducing (on purpose!!) and still go through the whole ritual?? Wtf???
To the worms question, well, there's Mormons, but that's a whole thing called soaking I'd rather not get into.
Scorpion: so you he kinda r*ped me
: oh that sounds awful
Scorpion: I ate him
:…
Why do all of the above sound like possible fetishes lmao
As a naturalist, I must say, this video is... *chef's kiss
The energy, the infos, the jokes... This is way more educational than many university professors will ever be. The right way of doing popular science and environmental education. Thank you for this.
And adding to the video, I believe that when it comes to vertebrates, there are frogs that are hermaphrodites as well.
Keep up the good work :)
I have no idea why, but hearing Lindsay say "slutted out" and "dirty skanks" is absolutely adorable. Like super oddly wholesome and I don't know why. Anyways, I love your videos, so fascinating every time!
i think it’s that she’s calling animals that for their strange mating rituals but doing it while acting as an educator lol like the tonal whiplash or something. i kinda love it
Honestly, I think its the tone of which they say it, their whole speech pattern is just silly and wholesome
Cause you're a simp
The "Enough" at 5:03 killed me. xD There's so much cool information in your videos, but your sense of humor is what makes them so fun to watch. Thank you for sharing your knowledge and wit!
I have never been able to stop thinking about how male anglerfish look like the sad ghosts of chicken nuggets ever since I first found that out
no cos see why did u say this cos it’s gonna live in my head rent free forever now
they look like mcdonalds rejects
But... that's how they like it. They want to be attached to their lady catch. The gal won't get away, now, and he doesn't even have to hunt for his food any more. All he has to do is chill out and do the fish equivalent to playing video games all day. 😂 Why complain about that life? 😂
@@MaryAnnNytowlthis level of anthropomorphism makes me want to run into the highway
Maybe its because I'm a neurodivergent sapphic who loves animals and science to a degree that makes other people think I'm weird, but seeing a funny, pretty girl talk about zoology kinda turns my brain to mush in the best way and makes me very happy. Discovering this channel was great and now I'm going to binge videos all day.
legit found this channel by clicking on one of her shorts vids bc I thought she was cute 😂 so I feel ya
Oh, I love science and animals (and astronomy, and archaeology, and paleontology, and a bunch of other -ologies) to a degree that I've been called weird, a nerd, and more unpleasant names my whole life, as well, and I'm just a 50-something disabled, depressed divorcée. Finding this channel has made me very happy, as well!
Embrace your weirdness. It's all we can really count on in life. 😊
I LOVE HOW SHE JUST PUT A LINK FOR A TWERKING MOTH POSTER IN HER VIDEO
10:52 This is so cool, a species that might have been overlooked or hard to study at the time has so much information about it so far back because the people around it developed a culture and natural sense of knowledge because of their proximity. So interesting learning how humans in proximity with obscure species for long periods of time learn to benefit from their existence.
You keep us on our collective toes with your wonderful rapid- fire lessons. Love it!
Your energy and enthusiasm are endlessly entertaining and enjoyable!
Edit: I love that you actually linked the twerking moth; you're a legend.
Hi Lindsay, I love your videos, because my dream job is to be a zoologist so this channel is awesome
hell yea! best of luck on your journey :)
@@LindsayNikole thanks :D
Thank you for including Twerking Mothman in the description.
Young lady,
Please please please never change and NEVER STOP making these videos!!
So much respect and admiration from the UK.
PS. you brighten my day with your sassiness, oh, and keep the swearing (cussing to you) it's just one of the things that makes your videos SO refreshing from a science point of view.
; - )
And if you have to censor it, take a leaf out of LPer’s books and replace it with multiple sounds (relevant animal noises could be fun).
Ur vids fr light up my whole day I’m like “babe wake up Lindsay just posted a new animal facts video!!”
I didn't know of any of these beforehand, but I'm not surprised. After learning about barnacles and multicellular yeast colonies in high school I've very well understood that when it comes to getting freaky, if you can imagine a way to reproduce evolution has already invented it at least twice. Love your delivery, please keep the series going!
4:15 so even the moth babes only want the bad boys who ate all the danger compounds 🗿
"I'm going to put the link to this because someone's gonna want it"
You definitely know your internet people.
My mom was watching some paranormal/alien home video show that showed a video of those moths, and I knew what that was, so I was trying not to laugh hysterically as the show had a good few minutes of random “paranormal professionals” and whoever reacting to it and speculating what kind of alien or mutant it was, only to cap it off with this one guy just dryly explaining a professional version of “this is just a boy moth spreading his stank for the chicks” and I was almost losing it laughing. XD
5:00 i’m literally cry-laughing at this your videos are both informative and absolutely hilarious 😂😂😂
that part absolutely did me in, I was NOT ready 🤣
The best fucking part 😂
Yes, Lindsay finally talks about the Tentacle moth when everyone else is too scared!
Hi . Causal Geographic sent over to say hello, I watched your intro- video - I luv your journey - I;m here to stay- you both have made zoology enjoyable, funny, informative and making people understand that nature has given us so much - when its gone its gone.
David Attenborough was one of my all time favorites. However, if Lindsey did the color commentary on a joint animal show. That would be the pinnacle of all time best nature documentaries for me. A culmination of proper etiquette, and edgy sass. Perfection. Keep doing your thing.
I'm sure David would be very proud of Lindsey for continuing the legacy
What new abominations do have for me today, oh wise hat-biologist!?
I seldom find the chance to use words like "unique", " informative",
and "really hysterically funny and ridiculously cool" to refer to the usually low-level and witless junk that passes for science on UA-cam.
All positive references above: you are all there, extremely smart person!
Always a joy....please continue....please?
I love this channel. you're great. I've never learned so much whilst giggling. lol
Hi Lindsay, I just read the absolutely most f'd-up horror book called The Troop that features Worm StuffTM and I would love to see your take on it as a zoologist
3:15 please don't tell me those scientists are inflating the nightmare balloon...
Edit:
4:58 didn't think i would laugh at this lol
you know i thought of a way to put into words what i love about your delivery: somehow it feels like a briefing before a dangerous mission or something. like im a special agent and youre telling me something vitally important to my survival before pushing me out of a plane but the information is weird animal mating rituals and things about worms. its easily digestible information said in a faux serious tone and so silly and interesting that its incredibly entertaining, and i WILL remember about the moth hair pencils during my next secret agent mission
I learn so much here and i love it!
Having a cat is a full-time job, and just when you start feeling confident that you know what you're doing and everything's going great, another one shows up and proclaims they live here now. Im up to 3 of them and i never went looking for a cat 😅
You never pick a cat. The cat picks you.
@@John_Weiss so true! I'm honored, and I love the little monsters, but it's a really weird thing to just have cats show up and call you their property. 😄
“Roll the clip, you know which one I’m talking about” 😂😂
Its always a good day when Lindsay posts about weird freaky creatures
super mega creeped out by those hair pencils. innocently eating my cheesecake and tune into your awesome channel and i just cannot stomach those hair pencils lol was completely grossed out til Gian rolled the clip, you know which one i'm talkin about lol
“Horror by the ways that they mate” I half expected humans to be first on the list💀
Your approach is new and interesting and refreshing. We learn shit and are entertained and we respect that your actually an educated person who is a good educator. Love you.

As some who was in a fraternity in college I approve of (and confirm) this message
Thank you for another hilarious and informative vid! You're my favorite internet teacher 🎉
This Is High quality content mixed with a good portion of humor :) Aboslutely love it!
I dont know how i found this channel, but i am so glad it happened!
I believe the UA-cam algorithm spews out thousands of videos all at the same time every spring during the third phase of the moon, and whatever sticks, sticks.
@7:58 "I just heard what I said and I had a moment of realization about what I do for a living." 😄
Love the series! Keep ‘em coming!
I always loved your shorts but never thought I'd enjoy longer videos about bugs/animals and such, but this is amazing! I'm glad I decided to watch this lol
Early! I love your content so much Lindsay, you know how to create fun in learning!! I always anticipate your videos as well :]
She deadass called slugs dirty skanks I love this series sm😌💖
that clip at 4:58 caught me so off guard sweet jesus
5:09 that Fkn moth clip kills me 😅
you should do a video on sea slugs! from photosynthesizing, to stealing stinging cells from what they eat... they're super interesting and weird :)
She already did! It's called zoologist answers: wtf is that?
OKOKOK! How tf did I miss this gem?! I just binged watched all the videos on this channel
As someone whos grown up in hiuse where butterflies and moths are bred, I think that that 'twerking' moth was warming up its wings to fly
why is this the best longform content ive seen in so long!!
You know, the moth was indeed horrifying, but the realization that pretty much any large body of water is a soup of sexual fluid? That was peak "nope" for me.😵
Great video, looking forward to the quiz.😊
No matter how bad my day was - I can rely on you cracking me up. Just wanted to let you know I really appreciate your work. 🤟
4:59 🤣
You are the zoology teacher I have always needed... is zoology a viable career? Wanted to do it my whole life, but I always got the impression that mainly academic careers were kinda shit... but god, I love knowing about creatures.
She just has to keep the swearing in check around kids 😂❤
Im so glad i ran across your channel. I love animals and hust weird things in general and your energy is fantastic! Its such a joy watching you and your videos. Keep being awesome ❤
She will be perferct for a cartoon where little kids are battling wierd animals and she will be the all knowing wizard like Merlin
I love the idea of a no-pressure-quiz! I've been out of school for so long! I want to go back but I don't even know what that would look like. Also your smirk when you're explaining some things is friggin hysterical. Thanks for the content, dude
I DO want to see a whole 30 minutes on slugs. They disgust me and they are also awesome.
Edit: A quiz. Once a teacher ALWAYS a teacher.
Passionate positive energy, biology, history, memes and much more, I love your content, so informative and entertaining, thank you 😊
You're quickly becoming my favorite content creator, not only do you share information that typically no one would even KNOW how to search and find but you're also doing it in a fun way that sticks with you. I watched one of your videos a couple months ago and it stuck with me so much to the point I just randomly dropped the facts I learned from you to my mom. Needless to say she was kinda horrified but interested nonetheless
Since becoming a Lindsay subscriber I can now only refer to the sea as the oh-shun 😂
More danger compounds more chicks 4:24
Couldn't agree anymore
5:00 STAHP I’m dying laughing at the sound effects 😂
Learning more about animals from her, than I ever did in school. Love her 😊
your videos are simultaneously horrifying and oddly relaxing, perfect for when i'm working and want something engaging to listen to!
Don't kink shame them!! Keep nature freaky!! lol love these videos, thank you for your continued dedication to science communication, there's so much misinformation about animals on the internet when stuff goes viral.
I have learned more from your videos and enjoyed the experience than from all other sources combined. Luv your style, please continue....
1:24 i will saver this moment
The little editor's note at 2:17 cracked me up.
I haven't been to school since 2012 in college and hearing "We're going to have a quiz" just made my anxiety shoot so high like I was having a flashback to sitting in class and I hadn't studied for something important
When I grow up I want to be a male angler fish 💦
That freekin' horn with that slug, at around 5 min. almost killed me lady😂...
I'm not nonbinary bruh I'ma hermaphrodite
Honestly the only educational channel i can literally focus on for more than 2 minutes! Props to you man
I am not a furry...
5:32 but...
Lindsay is one of the few content creators whose long form videos i prefer watching over her shorts.
My inner biology nerd is pleased and her vibes are IMMACULATE when theyre not rushed to fit a 10 second clip lol
0:04 Ummm... Actually this is another episode "WTF is THAT" which is stated in the title, not "WTF is THIS" 🤓
