Running Microsoft Office on a Chromebook - How to install Online Word, Excel, and PowerPoint 2022

- How to install Word, Excel, and PowerPoint on a Chromebook or Chromebox. How to install Microsoft Office ONLINE app on your Chromebook.
The office software is 'installed' within your Google account, independent of the hardware. However, the app, Google Docs, reads and saves files in a Word Doc format , if you need that format. Also, Google docs works offline, I use it a great deal on my Chromebook. I do not mean to miss lead anyone. It is just that apps can now be installed and synced within your Google Account. I hope this helps. I have been a Microsoft Office User Specialist instructor for over 20 years and my mission has always been to help and improve the lives of the people I share this world with.
When looking for the "Office" App , do be sure to ONLY use the "Office" App from Microsoft or Live.com. Look again at the Google App Store and, if you do a search for "Office" a number of apps and extensions will show up. Trust only the ones from Microsoft or live.com.
Please rate , share, and subscribe. Thank you.

It's important to make the most of the software that meets your needs, especially for personal use at home. Things have changed a lot at Microsoft lately. They now only allow use of their free Microsoft word, excel, powerpoint, at their live.com website as online only apps on most devices. The method shown in the video still works on a few devices.
Hello again! I have a question & need your expertise! LOL Although I have a PC, I think I would like to try a Chromebook for the first time. I have Microsoft 365 but just purchased the Creative Cloud Photography Subscription that includes Photoshop. I do a lot of work in Photoshop. Would you PLEASE recommend a Chromebook that can manage those powerful apps online. I'm clueless when it comes to the Chrome option. You are not responsible in any way for my purchase. However, which one would you recommend or the system requirements that are mandatory for a pleasant work experience. I love your videos & teaching style. I'm a subscriber. Thanks SO much! 💛
In truth any Chromebook with 8GB of RAM and a faster Intel CPU, should work well. I used the CB715 to create videos, now I am using an HP14a with a slower CPU and I do notice the difference in performance. So I recommend a Chromebook with an Intel core i processor, 8 GB of RAM . Other options to be aware of are storage capacity, but I use ext storage when creating videos, so it is not a game breaker. The CB715 with an Intel Core i processor, 8 GB RAM should do the job as long as you have fast internet..
Thank you sir

Great video!👍 Thanks for the tips. How to use Microsoft Office if you get a Chromebook is always the first thing people ask. How does the Chrome Office compair to Microsoft? Is it a big learning curve if you've always used Word, etc. Would love to know your thoughts on that! 💛
I have many , many videos on those topics. In fact, my main class is all about Google or Chrome Office and how it compares with Microsoft. In short, Chrome has all of the features of Microsoft and it works offline, while Microsoft forces its users to use their website. Both work with the same tools.
@@selmateacher7 That's good news! I may not renew my Microsoft 365 membership! 😁👍
Thanks, This is sooo valuable. However, can you tell me if the free version have some security issues compared to the paid one? Is it possible to share the file and not the link to anyone on whatsapp or by email , as an attachment?
Microsoft maintains that their free version has the same security. Please see my video listed here on how to share docs, etc. ua-cam.com/video/M8H182aIxoo/v-deo.html

Microsoft recently placed a limit on their Play Store app. If the app is used on a computer with a screen size of 10 inches, it will require a 365 account. For this reason, I am now only using option #1 as seen in the video.
Great video.. Using this for my Samsung Chromebook. All going good but what is driving me
Crazy is not being able to select presenter view in PowerPoint. I have two monitors running and see that in settings > displays. Got any ideas?

@@selmateacher7 I wish but I’m not sure how I’m missing this since I use PP a lot. I do not even have the option to edit the slide show and change the options. I’m wondering if this is because I’m using the trial version…

Does this support the Microsoft Editor feature? How about its Document Stats and percentage passive voice sentences, a key writing improvement tool.
Thank you for the questions. Yes, It supports editing and has all of the tools as you can see in my other videos on this topic. I use Google Docs more now, as it works offline on my Chromebook and I do use the Stars features, to let me know word count, etc. I use the Active voice assistive writing feature as it can help detect the passive voice in a phrase or sentence and replace it within Docs for free. For MS Word on a Chromebook, goto, Review, Editor, Review Tools to find the option. You will need to sign into your 365 account to activate Percentage Passive Voice.

Can i ask is it possible to create new docs with the chrome store web apps method?
Yes. I do. I use this method and I make new documents.
Yes. It is possible to create new blank docs this way. In fact, in the video, it shows the option called "New Black Doc" right when you first open the Word extension app. I just did it and it shows it on the first screen when it opens.
I'm a bit confused. I have an Acer Chromebook but found that some documents were read only ie limited access. Storage is always flashing up as low, too, even though I'm using a Dongle. So I just bought Microsoft 365 but as I don't use Excel or Powerpoint (and am unlikely to do so) could I have managed with the free version? I use Chrome OS and don't have Windows. I've gone back to studying so am anxious to get a good Word programme.
I use the free version and I do not find any documents that were read only. I do save my documents on local storage, as well as in the cloud, yet I have not used up the cloud storage. I also use Goggle Docs to open and edit my MS Word documents, often as it has all of the formatting tools as you can see in my computer class videos, where I instruct my students on how to get the most out of Google Docs.
Hello
im trying to use the word art function i cant seem to find it in the online version of word or in the newest version of the desktop word app. i also seem to be unable to move or adjust text boxes any advice
I use Google docs, if I need Word Art, as Microsoft removed it from their free version, you may also use www.cooltext.com for word art.
Hello Mr. Berry need some help here, so I have watched the video and followed your instructions. However when I go to, Chrome Web Store to add office, I am not seeing "office" what I am seeing is " Office-enable copy and paste", however when I scroll further down I can see word, excel and powerpoint as you have shown in the video. Why am I not seeing "Office".
Thank you for the question. Microsoft changes their apps on the Chrome store often. I have the free Microsoft Office app on my Chromebook, but you may install Word, Excel, and Powerpoint independently to get the same result. In fact, once one of their apps is installed, you will have access to your Microsoft drive, that has links to all of the Office apps.
Hi! I was able to add in chrome the office extension however when I try to add word, excel and powerpoint online, it says it is no longer available and visits the website. There's no option to install it anymore. Did I miss anything or can you give a workaround? Thank you!
As of September 18, 2021, Microsoft is discontinuing support for Office (which includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote and Outlook) on Chromebook.
You can still goto live.com and use it online with any device.
So regardless of Microsoft not supporting Excel, I’m 100 percent able to download it on a new chrome book I purchase? It’s for work and I’m worried it won’t work.
I use it on my Chromebook, as seen in the video. You can also use Google sheets to edit or create new excel spreadsheets.
So how would you change the theme on a document in word. I am not seeing the design tab at the top for mine.
You are correct. No Themes. I never used themes, as I created my own templates.
@@selmateacher7 is there no way to get themes? I am taking a college course and I don’t have full access to all of word.
@@haileyboyd9946 I'm curious, as well. I'm debating a chromebook for my master's courses but need full access to Word.
I followed your directions. Thank you for your video. For some reason Chrome Web Store says these apps are "No Longer Available". Do you know what to do next?
It also says it is compatible with my device, so I am confused. All I seem to be able to do on my laptop is get some goofy read only version that looks like my cell phone. I was able to use this as recently as a few months ago on my laptop. PS. I have a Samsung Chromebook if that helps.

That is correct
Hi! when I searched office in my webstore theres no office appeared. The first one I see is "Office Enable - Copy and paste" . I dont know what to do with my chromebook. Thank You!
Microsoft has changed their policy recently, but I updated where you can find it here:
ua-cam.com/video/M8H182aIxoo/v-deo.html
Does all the tools available the same as other laptops? And is this really installing the apps? it looks like it is an extension than app.
Yes. The tools are there as we use this app and Google Docs in my classrooms. You are missing WordArt in this version of MS Word, however, so we tend to use Google Docs more often
As this is merely the Online app, not the Desktop version, you will be missing a lot of features in MS Word. And even if you go premium, you will still be missing advanced features, like the Developer mode tab, which would enable you to program the app to your liking and add in custom stuff.
If you are the typical office/student/work user, then Chromebook will be good enough.
But if you are more into the Developer/Programmer side of things and you want more bang for your buck, I think a Windows OS, Mac OS or Linux OS will do much better than Chrome OS. They all have administrator privileges, but Chrome OS doesn't allow administrator privileges.
Interesting take on that.
You make a valid point about the limitations of using an online app version of Microsoft Word compared to the desktop version. The desktop versions do indeed offer a wider range of features and customization options, including the Developer mode tab you mentioned, which is particularly useful for those with programming or development needs.
For users whose primary tasks revolve around office work, studying, or everyday computing, Chromebooks can be a cost-effective and efficient choice, especially with their focus on simplicity and cloud-based applications. However, if you require advanced capabilities, administrator privileges, or a more versatile environment for programming and development, then Windows, Mac, or Linux operating systems might be more suitable, as they provide greater flexibility and control over your computing environment.
The choice ultimately depends on your specific needs and preferences, balancing convenience with functionality. Thank you for sharing your insights on this matter!
i think i have exact the same Chromebook as you have but i have problems adding the apps word and excel. I get the message: Device not compatible (but than in Dutch)
hmm. There are two ways to get the the Microsoft apps. Please try by going to
office.live.com/start/myaccount.aspx
Whenever I'm on the online version of office, if I try to open Word for example, OneDrive pops up and then says "Yo need to have the app installed". I don't understand why this happens :/ Ty for the video ❤
See if you have the Office extensions by clicking on the puzzle piece found in the top right hand side of the browser. When you click on the grey puzzle piece, a pull down menu should appear. Office should be one of the options. If you click on the blue pin next to the "Office" icon, then it should pin the apps to the top of the browser. You may then open the apps that way.

Hi, thanks for your video. I purchased a Acer Spin 311 Chromebook. However, while opening office, say word, it direct to onedrive to create the file but returned "Can't open, file may be corrupted."
Going to Onedrive directly, the file is found and created. So, I click the file at Onedrive, it can open but it is read only, meaning the word environment at has no upper tab "File, Insert, Design, Layout, .. etc"
But it won't be happen and go normal if I used Windows 10 / 11.
After watching your video, I follow your guidance and installed via Chrome Web Store for Office, Word online, Excel online. After all, the issue is still the same "File cannot be open, may be corrupted" and the file is here but read only (look like the word online is reader). I am not Office 365 subscriber, do you have any tips or idea? Many thanks.
Update: I just found the issue behind. Since I installed OneDrive app on the Chromebook. The default file manager show underneath OneDrive is "READ ONLY".
Then, I uninstalled this app and try the above again. The issue is resolved and the file is editable.
Can it be possible with OneDrive App installed but make the file Not "READ ONLY"? Thanks.
I know that Microsoft has a limitation of files being 'read only' on devices larger than 10.1 inches. I normally only use the web version of Microsoft for that reason. . See more here:

So does this mean, I can only use my chromebook when I have internet connection? That might actually be a good thing for workaholics like me. It sets boundaries and limits to how much I can work.
You may use Google drive and those apps, offline. Only Microsoft requires an internet connection.
I couldn't install playstore on my chrombook. How can I do that?
Regards.!
Microsoft has been making many changes lately. Please try using their online version of office found at live.com
What is the best chromebook for students ?
The HP 14 seems to be a good fit
sorry sir im using dell chromebook 11,it dosent have playstore and when im searching using web store their is no office by microsoft office :( ,im a noob with this chromebook and this chrome os, any suggestion how to install playstore in my chromebook
yes, i have a new video for 2023, as Microsoft has changed their policy. the link is in the description.
It still doesn't look the same as the original version from windows, mac or Microsoft laptops. There are not all tools such as ''add citation'' on reference or recording audio/video straight in PowerPoint.
Have you tried changing the options in the "view" tool? I still see the tools when I just opened the app on my Chromebook. Be sure that the app is set to edit and not just view, as that will also hide the tools.
When I search those up they Dont show up on the store. Office does but it looks different.
Here is the link to Microsoft Word. I just checked it today:

Hi i just want to ask a question about my Chromebook if how i can update my Chromebook? I don't how pls help me thank you.
I don't have office apps on my web store 😭😭
Updating the Chrome OS is automatic. When an update is ready, you will see an arrow in the notification area, next to the time. click it and the system will update and restart.

I connect my Chromebook to my phone's mobile data..while using word online, will it take more data? I dont have WiFi, just mobile data
Thank you for the question. It will take data, but the amount depends on if the document size, as well as if you are using images within the doc. I have found that it is still a small amount of data usage.
Do you get version which the windows version come with?
There are two versions. The free version does not have word art. To get wordart and all of the features of 365, then use Google Drive, Doc, and Sheets, as you see in my other videos, showcasing the better features now found in Google Docs, sheets and slides.
They no longer have them available. I have an account. How do I gain full access of these tools using my Chrome book?
I still see it there. Please try this link:

Do you have a preference for Word online versus the Google docs version?
yes. I prefer Google Docs.
The first method is free, but it does need a network?
Yes. Microsoft changed their apps a few years ago. They are used online. But Google Docs, sheets, etc, can be used offline on the Chromebook, as seen in my other videos on the topic. Both MS Office and Google Drive are free and can create, edit, and share MS word documents.
PP and Word worked by doing this but when I try to open excel it tells me something went wrong.... any advice
Whoa? I was just using excel on my Chromebook this morning. Please try again as it should work. Another way to get to those Microsoft apps is by going to live.com.
