Recently Lee Alley stepped down as the Leader of the 5th Battalion Association. I served in the 5/60th in 1969 with the Charlie Rangers, and have attended every reunion since 2004. Lee has the respect and gratitude of all members of the association. His leadership skills and personable style put so many of us at ease at the reunions. I will be forever grateful to Lee for making the reunions such a healing experience. No matter how busy he was running the reunion, He would take time to chat with anyone that approached him. A remarkable man and leader. I'm glad Larry took the time to interview him. OOh-Rahh to the Bandido Charlie's finest. Lets split another pizza Lee!

Vietnam War Memorial, panel 24e, Line 76 Everett Stratton Jr...
That is my Uncle who I had never got to meet, and I had never gotten to know.
He was K.I.A. Quang Nam province 8/4/1967.
I wasn't born until 5/14/1975...I remember looking at a bunch of pictures of him that my Grandma used to have of him. She also had some pictures of him before he was shipped off to Vietnam.
I believe one other Uncle of mine was in Vietnam as well. He survived. Another Uncle tried to enlist after receiving information of my Uncle Everett being K.I.A. .
I believe they discharged him from boot camp for not being "mentally fit" for service. Yes, it was because he was so emotional from losing his brother, my Uncle Everett.

Stumble up on this channel this evening . So glad I did. I agree with ,and maby a little diferent view on some things. But like the man said I,, and, He has that freedom. How great that is. That is what being an American is. My dad went ashore on Omaha Beach , and he did not talk. I was in the Viettman theatre in 65 into 66. And I remember being in the airports at different cities with protesters posted there to spit on men in uniform. And being looked down on by older vets. Many people did exactly as he did hide in public. How sad that is. His men have told him he did a good job. He should be very proud and I truly believe he is.

Thank you for your service Sir. I grew up during the Vietnam war. Nightly news and newspapers kept me aware of the goings on in Nam. Reality came when my Dad's cousin died there, he was in Cav. In 1975 my registration for the draft was easy knowing the war was over and I could go off to college and fulfil my life plans. You had to grow up fast getting into that jeep. Glad to hear about your experiences cousin, this reminds me how lucky my life has been.

Lee Alley, I saw the picture of you receiving a medal from General Abrams. It brought so many memories back for me. I served in the Army and was at MACV Command Group and his office was just above mine. I don't know if you knew this but he had his dog in Nam and it was in the office with Abrams. Your story is remarkable. Your experience of coming homme and shedding the uniform and not telling anyone of your service is so typical. I did the same. My kids hardly know that I served. Your story is profound and a record that needs to be honored and kept. Thank you for your service sir.

I was a very young Canadian Infantry soldier and had the privilege too train a bit with Americans. One night in the field off duty a few cases of beer appeared and we chatted with some Senior NCOs from the 101 ABN. They were Vietnam Veterans and us kids were eager too hear about the war. It was a quiet conversation and they told us about fighting the NVA. The stories....and they were only a few... were sobering and pretty grim. I have never forgot it. We were in awe of these men. My father served in Vietnam with the RAAF in '68 and on the ANZAC day parade after it he and his men were being harangued and abused by a bunch of University students and because they were in uniform they could not touch them but I got rather upset being 10 years old and objected to my father being called a Baby Killer. So I attacked them screaming "My Dads not a Baby Killer" throwing punches left, right and center, and being 10 years old when I threw an upper cut at the loudest of them I caught him fair in the nuts. Shut them up real quick and I got all the free lemonade I wanted at the Officers Mess afterwards. Later in life when I was having issues after my service overseas, I bottled it all up until I eventually opened up to Dad in 2006, he helped me deal with it by giving me someone to talk to about my issues and nightmares but then he died in 2008. RIP Dad, talking to you helped a lot and I hope it helped you as well.

The smell he is referring to is exactly that of sweating feet in old leather sandals. It is all pervasive in the 80% humidity and oppressive heat. The good thing is you don't smell it after a few weeks. The worst smell in Vietnam was around duck farms which is really strong.
I wasn't stationed in Bien Fuk but it was a real toilet with mosquito's in clouds and 80% mud. What a wonderful man and leader - we had the best of the best over there - I had a similar experience in that I didn't want to talk about it for 30 years - gave my decorations to my son. Now it's easier as I have had time to separate myself from the experience. I also was a 20 year old 1st Lt. in Vietnam -

Wonderful man and an example of America's finest. A real leader of men and a hero. The end his talk was very insightful into the reason for the much of the brokenness that was bore by the young soldiers after their return from Vietnam. It was not the enemy they fought that caused their pain but the effort by some to place blame on them to cover the tracks of failed misguided policies. Welcome home Heroes!

I am an U.S. Air Force veteran and my father was a Navy officer on board the USS Yorktown and he was a pearl harbor survivor. I took a job as a QC inspector on army helicopters. I had met several guys who were vietnam vets at the base. I always had great respect for them.

What an incredible, inspirational and important interview.
i am from the freedom generation and not from the U.S. . And thankfully haven’t had that freedom jeopardized or threatened .
Llistening to his memories makes me even more appreciative of that same and precious freedom.
This is the kind of person we need to hear from , and learn from,
cuz no matter how skilled Mr. Alley was in recon or combat , You can tell that he would choose a world without wars in a heartbeat.
If , hypothetically speaking, I would have found myself in the situation of having to go into an insane Vietnam- like mission :
Yes , I ‘m pretty sure I would trust this man with my life.
Thank You for sharing your war time experiences and your recollections .

When you touched down on the tarmac upon returning to this country, I wish I could have been there to welcome you back. Yourself, and all veterans, should have received respect and honor for your sacrifice from everyone in this country. Yourself, and all veteran, have had my respect and honor from the moment you enlisted. I do not need to wish you well...because you did well, then and now. I'm proud of you.

I’ve met quite a few service liars (stolen valor) and exaggerators and the thing that sets them apart from real hero’s is their lack of humility. I found out my father in law was a silver star recipient for his actions in the Ardennes from a chapter I randomly read in a book. In all the time I knew him he never mentioned his service until I asked about that.
This is a very rare internet gem and thank You so much for your service Lee.

I was an Army officer during the Vietnam era. Fortunately, the Army sent me to the Pentagon instead of Vietnam. Luck of the draw I guess. My youngest son was an enlisted paratrooper and a mustang Army officer in Afghanistan and Iraq. He was an S3 and S4 in a Transportation BN. He led 60 to 100 vehicle convoys over IED infested roads from Kandahar to area FOBs and COPs. He commanded missions of up to 6 convoys at one time. He saw his goal as doing the job and bringing everyone home. I am glad he went and did just that. We all three seem to think alike. Just recently my son retired as a Major after over 20 years service.

An Army Colonel one asked me what I thought about Army regulations. I replied, "they are a guide for people that don't know how to do their job. They pay us to be managers and managers have to use common sense to get the job done". A big smile appeared on the Colonel's face.

Exceptional interview! Thank you both very much for this! I served my time in the Navy, 1970-1971. I was not sent to Vietnam. I was a corpsman who served most of my time at Naval Hospital San Diego. I grew up "a Navy junior" as my mom used to say. I didn't care much for Army people. (This wasn't from the teaching of my parents, just from some of the books I had read in my youth. I believed every day was Army-Navy Game day, and we all hated each other.) I'm proud to say that I've long since changed. I realize most of the Army folks are just like the majority of the Navy and Marine people I've known (and loved) over the years. Lee Alley proves himself in this interview as one fabulous Army veteran and American. Thank you both so very much!
