Living someplace warm, I always check on how the sweat is channeled on the brow. I had one helmet that had pads that converged in the middle of the brow channeling all the sweat down between my eyes. That helmet didn't last long. The one I have now has a suspension mechanism that channels it to either side of my face and makes it much more enjoyable.
I got a giro helmet with mips or w/e it was, damn it's so comfortable it doesn't even feel like it's an issue at all to wear plus it makes me feel more protected in other areas which is interesting.
What are your feelings on MIPS helmets? You are so right about trying on helmets in the shop rather than ordering online. I have learned that a universal sized helmet isn't unless you have a universal sized head. I have a large head so I need to have one that is either large or extra-large. I wear a hat size of 7⅝ to 7⅞ (US hat size). I like having a helmet with a visor. I find that It helps with avoiding sun in my eyes. I also attach rear-view mirrors to my visor. I use the ones that are made to attach to glasses bows. I use duct-tape to keep them from falling off.
Those height adjustable retention systems are the best for us guys with large protrusions. The Louis Garneau Course helmet has the most reach of any I tried, love how it fits. There's also a lot of variation on the straps, some fitting certain head types better than others. It takes a long time to find that special one.
Another fitment test: make sure the helmet doesn't "spin" on your head after it is adjusted for comfort? I've found the manufacturers vary quite a bit when it comes to roundness e.g. Giro and Uvex seem to fit a wider/rounder head where Kask and Scott are narrower.
You want a helmet that will stay in place as you ride and especially during a fall so paying more for a top of the line 3D retention system e.g. Catlike/LAS does improve safety. You may be able to find a less expensive helmet with an ideal fit but you are better off with something that can adjust to your head like your Kask did (which wasn't a cheap helmet).
That beard! Congrats Dan, it suits you! :) Unfortunately i made the mistake of buying a helmet that's a little bit big for my head. it doesn't come off and is properly secured and all that but if i move my head fast from side to side, the helmet shakes a bit. Bah :(
Damn, I hope you found the answer. If anyone else has this question, I find most helmets with a headlock dial on the back will fit quite easily. I have an XL head and they fit with a LOT of room to spare.
Thanks for this! Any advice on the best way to clean the manky, sweat stained straps and pads? Soap, water, and elbow grease the only way to do it? Or any special tips?
shopping for my first bike helmet, just so I'll be able to ride with my friend's kid edit - bought that helmet... used some tips from this video and a couple from the comments to look less like an idiot in the process. 50 years old, been riding since I was a kid and haven't landed on my head yet. So in one way it might be more likely to happen. Oh well, there's enough helmets out there, at least I won't look like the 'special' guy...
I'm asian and had lots of trouble finding a helmet that matches my head. I wore XL regardless of brand and just decided to order a helmet from Japan, now wearing M. Guess it makes sense for a western dominant sport to produce based on western cranium shapes.
I now know two people who riding road bikes had accidents and fell face first, hitting their face where the helmet does not cover. Both had severe injuries and one even a titanium place put in place via surgery. What would you say about getting a downhill helmet for road cycling? I mostly ride in the city, about 15km a day (cars, potholes, stupid drivers: high risk of accident). I'm talking about something like the MET Parachute, full face coverage downhill helmet weighing only about 700 grams.
Look at their video of things not to wear while cycling I think, it's a big no no for them. Nevertheless it's your face you are protecting, so who cares?
why are the majority of bike helmets unprotected around the face and sides? wouldnt a full face helmet like the downhill/motocross style be more advisable? are bike helmets sufficient in protection?
Great video many thanks. Although it didn't answer my specific question it does give me some ideas how to proceed. My basic dilemma is I have an adopted daughter from the Congo. Like me she loves to ride bikes, unlike me she has a lot of hair, and unfortunatley does not like to wear a helmet (but she does) primarily because of her hair. Don't see many black cyclist and see even less black female cyclist. How do they find a helmet that is adjustable enough to cope with the hair and still easy to get on, get off, and is comfortable. Would like to hear anyone's suggestions. Thanks!
Mark Webster wow I just checked it out. Never heard of the Hovding. That is very interesting. If it really works it might be a good solution. Many thanks.
GCN promoting helmets in a helmet manufacturers showroom. That's objective reporting! Surely you should have added a disclaimer like "this video was brought to you by Kask". How about an objective piece on what the safety standards actually are and some testing of whether any of the manufacturers claims stand up!
Ronan Fox They're currenty in Italy filming around the Giro. Kask is an Italian firm, so it makes sense to drop in and film from their factory. He didn't spend five and a half minutes saying 'Kask helmets are cool, forget all the other brands you should just buy Kask', did he?
I once got spun by a car that suddenly turned left and the helmet hit the ground - what hurt my head was the polystyrene cracking inside and poking into my skull - quite irritating tho the helmet was a few yrs old - so replace them as repeated sweatings weaken the black stuff...
circumference of my head is 58cm.. if small/medium size (54-62cm) and large/X large size (56-64cm), which helmet size is more suitable for me?? based on your professional opinion..
I'm just gonna use motorbike logic. If you hit it the foam and shell gets small cracks. So if you hit it again hard enough it could very easily shatter and it will not be nearly as effective at saving your grey matter as a helmet that has not had an impact.
I've had a way experience with the Giro Foray for road riding and the Bell Super2 for mountain biking. Check out my reviews and let me know what you think.
One question what helmet what the one with the switch on top? the aerodynamic and ventilation mode thing its so cool I want one! TY for the amazing vid Cheers
Can a bike helmet be used for skateboarding? I happen to much prefer the look of bike helmets instead of the skateboard "bowl" shaped helmets, but I can't find any skateboarder helmets that look like bike helmets?
Not a troll, ironic...I like some bike helmets more than skate helmets, too, you can use them but they offer less protection for ramps and pipes and such...just something to consider.
It'll work fine, most countries have identical safety standards for both so they're technically interchangeable for similar activities like biking and skating, it's things like spelunking or rock climbing that require a different sort of helmet.
Wrong, some skate helmets don't have the same safety standards as bike helmets. They'd probably protect you a bit if you fell off a bike, but they aren't certified to.
What's the evidence that you should wear a helmet? My understanding is when they were made compulsory in Australia the proportion of head injuries increased. Wearing a helmet may increase the risk of injury. I first looked into this when buying a helmet for a child. In order to get a safety certificate it was tested as though the child had fallen sideways from a stationary bike.
How do we know the safety rating sticker is genuine. Electrical items use a similar system but it means nothing. Items marked with the correct safety rating have turned out to be very dangerous fakes. Is this an issue in the bicycle helmet industry?
I've got two things to ask about: 1. What's with those road helmets with circular vents like Dan used to use in the cervelo test team? Is it just another design because it looks less aero than a normal helmet with straight vents. 2. If less vents mean aero, correct me if I'm wrong but should skate helmets and those big old school road helmets with two or three vents be technically aero too? Thanks :)
+Ramir Angeles aerodynamics are about refinement. Because skate helmets and old road helmets had very little if any thought put towards aerodynamics they aren't likely to be very aerodynamic. They would be even less aerodynamic if you drilled more holes in them but I suspect that basically any modern road helmet is better than either.
What is the lifespan of a helmet? I have never seen test results that demonstrates that an old lid is less safe or structurally sound than a new helmet. Does anybody have any data on lifespan of a helmet? Obviously it depends on how many hours of riding, sweat, rain, sun, etc. But I'm curious does the compact foam actually break down over time? Dan you never added a consideration for whether one helmet model is better for your or not???
Its well disscued on bikefourms.net helemt thread with links to studys but I have never looked at the studys myself, theroy is the foam/polystyrene becomes more brittle with age. Although more likely I reckon after 3 years its been dropped so many times its proberly weaker haha! (Commuting is hard on helemts I have found) If I see any structual damage or have a heavy crash that I think may have hit my head I replace it but if I just drop it I dont worry about it. End of the day completely upto you but I like to play it safe as its saved my life twice! Perssonly I think the foam degrading is rubbish (after only 3 years anyway) I do think its likely unseen structual damage may happen in that time drom drops and small crashes though. Cheers and have a grate day!
Okay, so the way my head is shaped the helmet slides to one side. It's nothing major, but it's so irritating to come back from a ride and notice that you look like Alexander Kristoff after crossing the line. Can I do something about it? Is it okay to cut on the inside of the helmet to get it to fit me better? I tried many helmets. Some are tilted less, but on my aero helmet is very noticeable
It is my oppinion that only full face helmets offer protection. The ones shown in the video won't do much, since I don't imagine you would hit anything with the top of your head.
Hi, I have a problem! A BIG head.... Using your technique with the tape my head circumference comes in at 64cm. I am a road rider with a very nice bike and kit but I am finding it difficult to find a nice helmet (I have a cheap Giro one at the moment) in my size. Any help would be much appreciated....
Hi! I wanted to ask if anyone knows about using a child's helmet. So, today I went to a local bike shop(not in the UK ATM) to buy a helmet. They measured my head and considering my size(52cm) they gave me a bell helmet, which fitted kinda ok on my head. I bought it, then realised it was a kid's helmet. Do you think I shall return it? Cause I did a bit research online and some ppl say that even if it fits well on an adult's head, it still isn't safe. Could someone advise, please? Thanks in advance!
In this video, There is a Kask Protone in matt black on the table. Where can I get my hand on one(buy). I have never seen one like it. Thank you. Vinzent
Hello. I am considering buying a Kask infinity. But It gets warm and humid where I leave, so my question is, do the three vents in front provide good ventilation? Thanks!
i have a dirtbike helmet and i was wandering if i should just were that. i dont have any other helmet and ive fallen a few times and almost hit by dumb drivers
+Antonio Alexius It will be perfectly safe (well, equally safe) but you may want to invest in an actual bike helmet just for weight and comfort (and aero if you think that's important).
Are there helmets measured by two dimensions: width and length? I was at a bike shop and couldn't find a helmet, which really fits. Either it's too narrow, or too long... or it does not fit with my glasses on. Do helmet proportions differ depending on country they are sold in?
Thank you, skinny Hugh Jackman!
Read my mind
Lmaoooo😹😹😹😹
Was thinking the same thing..I lolled when I read your comment.🤣
I died 😆😆😆😆😆😆
OH MY GOD!!! why am I only seeing this now🤣🤣🤣🤣
Always take your glasses to the fit session. Hate to buy a helmet to find out you can not wear your glasses.
Chris Oxford good tip.
Oh so true.
Manfred Martinez Dominguez Otero
Thanks for this important tip!
i brought both my regular prescriptions and the shooting type safety wraparounds, thanks for the tip
I just pick the coolest looking one that matches the color scheme..

I just bought the GIRO Switchblade, 4 days before a major accident.
I'm glad I went with 'SAFE' and not 'Looks'.....

I have a bump at the back of my head as well. I read up on it and apparently it is a throw back to neolithic man.
Extra brain power.
Yeah, It is External Occipital Protuberance. We are not alone :)
Loved Dan's ostrich impression when testing the fit of the helmet.
Another fitment test: make sure the helmet doesn't "spin" on your head after it is adjusted for comfort? I've found the manufacturers vary quite a bit when it comes to roundness e.g. Giro and Uvex seem to fit a wider/rounder head where Kask and Scott are narrower.
A mountain bike helmet will proof to be useful for a roadie, if you frequently trip over logs ;).
John Or if you fall because you cant clip in, lol
These are handy for e scooter because go very fast.
When Dan showed how to test the fit of a helmet, he look I like a monty python routine.
Good information, thanks.

Lots I didn't know about, the green Kask there is gorgeous.
Bell actually makes a good helmet. nothing better than a classic steel road bike
Wolverine?
Discount skinhead Hugh jackman
oohfuck
You should do a type of videos where you show how the equipments are made
That beard! Congrats Dan, it suits you! :)
Unfortunately i made the mistake of buying a helmet that's a little bit big for my head. it doesn't come off and is properly secured and all that but if i move my head fast from side to side, the helmet shakes a bit. Bah :(
im using a coconut shell coz i cant afford to buy😢
Laughed more than I should XD
At least it vegan and organic!
As long as it’s not the coconut tree
Do you have any recommendation for the helmet that fits large mellon shape head?
Damn, I hope you found the answer.
If anyone else has this question, I find most helmets with a headlock dial on the back will fit quite easily. I have an XL head and they fit with a LOT of room to spare.

iamtheface78 soap and water.
Make it all sound so simple. Can you teach me physics? I'm sure you would make it sound like a piece of cake.
shopping for my first bike helmet, just so I'll be able to ride with my friend's kid

This fella and his changing face is proof of the power of beard.
thanks for the info, this will be the first time i buy a helmet.

Could you guys do a "How To Choose" for cycling computers and for riding jerseys and bibs?
Silly question but how often should a helmet be replaced? Thanks for any guidance you can give.
I have two helmets. Giro Hex and Giro Roc Loc. My Roc is so comfortable I can't feel it when I wear it!
It would be very interesting to watch the CNC machining, what I think, is a helmet prototype!!!
I understand the point of a helmet and have begun wearing one myself. That said, my shaved head was far more aero and comfortable by itself.
why are the majority of bike helmets unprotected around the face and sides? wouldnt a full face helmet like the downhill/motocross style be more advisable? are bike helmets sufficient in protection?
Great explanation, different helmets for different scenes
Glad you liked it!
How frequently should you replace your helmet? I've read after its 5 years old, but that seems to often?
Spiuk are the best fitting helmet I've ever had. Kask an other helmets don't even come close.
Im planning on getting a Sena X1. It's a helmet with a microphone array.
Great video many thanks. Although it didn't answer my specific question it does give me some ideas how to proceed. My basic dilemma is I have an adopted daughter from the Congo. Mark Webster wow I just checked it out. Never heard of the Hovding. That is very interesting. If it really works it might be a good solution. Many thanks.
you could just cut her hair and have her comply with her new environment, instead of having the world revolve around her
Giro and Bontrager are the best helmets out there!
By the way, thanks for all the videos! Great channel!
So, does anyone think that perhaps GCN might have some connection with KASK at all??
GCN promoting helmets in a helmet manufacturers showroom. That's objective reporting! Surely you should have added a disclaimer like "this video was brought to you by Kask". How about an objective piece on what the safety standards actually are and some testing of whether any of the manufacturers claims stand up!
Ronan Fox Aww, there was at least two seconds of video of a rider wearing a team issue POC Octal! That's far more balanced than the news media.
Ronan Fox They're currenty in Italy filming around the Giro. Kask is an Italian firm, so it makes sense to drop in and film from their factory. He didn't spend five and a half minutes saying 'Kask helmets are cool, forget all the other brands you should just buy Kask', did he?

good video. thanks for the advice
GCN my head measures 24.5 inches I think that's 61.25 cm I have a mountain bike I ride mostly in the city, I can't find any helmets that fit
How to find a helmet that will allow me hear anything?? All i can hear is wind noise!
What if you're like me and you can't find a helmet big enough ( size 63 to 64 CM , XL Size Bicycle Helmet ) ?
Which helmet is at 2:32? I like the look of that one
Thank you for sharing..
Thank you 😊
Im ride a mtb but, im always riding it on a road, so is road bike helmet much better to buy?
Thanks Rhett!

Ok then dont wear one
You think having an inch of energy-absorbing foam around your head *increases* your risk of a head injury?!
How do we know the safety rating sticker is genuine. Electrical items use a similar system but it means nothing. Items marked with the correct safety rating have turned out to be very dangerous fakes.
Is this an issue in the bicycle helmet industry?
Just getting back into road bikes I have a bell helmet which I use when out on mtb can I use that one ? Thanks Derrick
How do you choose if you are in between size, for example you have a 58 cm size. Most of the brands are from 54 to 58cm and 58 cm to 62cm.
Your best bet is to try both sizes on in person
What are your thoughts on MTB helmets with Visor's are they safe?
I've got two things to ask about:
Thanks :)
Did dan ride for the verve low test team?

They would be even less aerodynamic if you drilled more holes in them but I suspect that basically any modern road helmet is better than either.
Ok some good advice. But are there any helmets for people with a long narrow headshape? Almost all of the helmets look really ugly on my head.
if you can fit your hand under the helmet after you put it on, is that any good?
Can you just use a ski helmet or are they less safe?
What is the lifespan of a helmet? I have never seen test results that demonstrates that an old lid is less safe or structurally sound than a new helmet. Does anybody have any data on lifespan of a helmet? Obviously it depends on how many hours of riding, sweat, rain, sun, etc. But I'm curious does the compact foam actually break down over time?
Dan you never added a consideration for whether one helmet model is better for your or not???
Some studys say every 3 or 5 years, no ideaif true or not.
Perssonly I usualy end up brakeing it or wanting to upgrade before then.
***** Have you seen an actual study result or is it cycling lore? I'd like to see a real study
Its well disscued on bikefourms.net helemt thread with links to studys but I have never looked at the studys myself, theroy is the foam/polystyrene becomes more brittle with age.
Although more likely I reckon after 3 years its been dropped so many times its proberly weaker haha! (Commuting is hard on helemts I have found)
If I see any structual damage or have a heavy crash that I think may have hit my head I replace it but if I just drop it I dont worry about it.
End of the day completely upto you but I like to play it safe as its saved my life twice!
Perssonly I think the foam degrading is rubbish (after only 3 years anyway)
I do think its likely unseen structual damage may happen in that time drom drops and small crashes though.
Cheers and have a grate day!
i always find most look bulky as i have a small head for an adult. are there any good ones that look slimmer ? flatter. ? price i'm not fussy

Anyone know anything about where to get custom decals or art on helmets? Websites, Companies, people?
It is my oppinion that only full face helmets offer protection. The ones shown in the video won't do much, since I don't imagine you would hit anything with the top of your head.
EXCELLENT JOB WELL DONE 👏
Hi, I have a problem! A BIG head.... Using your technique with the tape my head circumference comes in at 64cm. I am a road rider with a very nice bike and kit but I am finding it difficult to find a nice helmet (I have a cheap Giro one at the moment) in my size. Any help would be much appreciated....
my 1st rudy projuct helmet is 8 year old on 1-2018 and do i need a new helmet?
Thanks, great vid. But i will be buying a Salice anyway !
thanks logan!
I also have that lump, cool. Right?... You can be assured it's not a tumor.
I have the specialized prevail and that thing is insanely lightweight and comfortable. Almost $300 tho :/
I wonder if they put that one on sale. My budget is about $270 less.

One that fits.
Hello. I am considering buying a Kask infinity. But It gets warm and humid where I leave, so my question is, do the three vents in front provide good ventilation?
Thanks!

I need the most compact helmet possible. I already have a big head so an exaggerative helmet just adds insult to injury lol 😂😂
What do you think about the uvex EDAero?
do a video on glasses next

The adjustments at the back should adjust enough to fit for the length of your head.
YES, the perfect video!
1st step, have the money
Did you know that in America, the same $600 helmet from the local bike boutique has to meet the same standards as the $19.99 department store version?
Nice shoes Dan.
What are they?
